ENG: How do we want to live in the future? The Futurium motivates its guests to engage with different future perspectives and possibilities, and to do so in a playful way: various scenarios, an exhibition, a future lab and a forum for dialogue and discussion invite you to develop your own attitude.

The FUTURIUM building was opened on 5 September 2019 and is a kind of future museum and thus aims to answer open questions about the future. Admission is free and anyone can visit it not far from Berlin's main railway station. I personally can only recommend it. If only because the roof terrace (skywalk) offers a beautiful panoramic view over Berlin's city centre.

When motivated, man, that crane can jump.

Awake at 4am I attempt to motivate myself. Coffee first, and then the wanting of a full memory card drives me out the front door and speeding down the street. But where to go? I did not have a plan. What is your go-to when you just need some photography time?

The oldest meteorological station in the world

The Horologion of Andronikos Kyrrhestes , 50 BC

The 12-meter-tall structure has a diameter of about 8 metres and was topped in antiquity by a weathervane-like Triton that indicated the wind direction. Below the frieze depicting the eight wind deities — Boreas (N), Kaikias (NE), Eurus (E), Apeliotes (SE), Notus (S), Lips (SW), Zephyrus (W), and Skiron (NW) — there are eight sundials.

In its interior, there was a water clock (or clepsydra), driven by water coming down from the Acropolis.

Recent research has shown that the considerable height of the tower was motivated by the intention to place the sundials and the wind-vane at a visible height on the Agora, effectively making it an early example of a clocktower

It’s been a while since I shot a still life, so, motivated by #LeonVanKemenade, I used real money (65p) for a pepper from the Co-op. Not quite up to Edward Weston’s standard but even he had to shoot more than one.

I felt motivated to take more photos this week. Inspired by the 'Beads' theme for the 4-Sep-2020 'Looking close ... on Fridays' group, I put my glass bead bracelets on a bottle, so the bokeh you can see are more beads around the back of the bottle. I had a fun time getting shots, then the usual hard time deciding which one to use :-)

It's really hard for me to try to explain how hard it is to motivate myself to do any photography these days whilst I continue to recover from my knee injury. Recovery has been seriously interrupted by lockdowns and closures of gyms...indeed, I've not even been able to see a physio for over 6 months. With all of that my fitness has suffered considerably and so even short excursions can sometimes feel like I'm hitting the wall at mile 22 of a marathon. Therefore, the thought of making the effort to climb a hill for photography when the conditions are less than ideal...well, it doesn't appeal.

When on the hill, a different fear now presents itself. Fear of another injury. I used to head out without a care in the world really. Sure, I might slip and fall, but I always felt that I was the master of my own destiny, even in those circumstances...but now it is different. My body just failed when I injured my knee, with very little in the way of warning, just a little knee pain like I've had for years anyway. The actual step I took when my tendon snapped was so incredibly innocuous, it's the type of step I've taken thousands, if not millions, of times before...it was just like going down the stairs at home...but in that moment, my tendon chose when I was alone, on a hill, in inclement weather and without a mobile signal, to snap...not at home, going down the stairs. And now, although the injured knee presents no pain, my other one does, so the fear is that that will someday go too, as so often seems to happen with people who rupture one tendon, eventually the other one ruptures too. Add to that a lack of strength in the injured knee, some balancing issues and a tendency to give way without warning...that all adds up to a heck of a lot of nervousness when going off the beaten track.

The day I took this photo was no different in many ways. I was solo. The weather was inclement. There was no-one really around. I did have some extra protection in the form of a satellite transceiver that enables me to send an SOS and I did tell my wife where I was this time. But with boggy conditions underfoot, it still meant my mind wasn't wholly invested in photography until I'd set up my tripod and decided to wait, in the cloud and drizzle, for things to happen. And so I waited...and waited...and waited. About 2 hours later I felt the subtle change in temperature on my neck as the sun tried to break through the misty conditions. Poised with my finger on the shutter just hoping for the mistiness to clear a little to reveal the landscape, the conditions brightened to the left of the scene you see here until not only were the two tress visible, but also the landscape beyond...and low and behold, a rainbow. What resulted was a stitch pano consisting of 7 vertical frames and 160 megapixels of Lake District loveliness. This scene lasted for all of 30 seconds...and then it was gone.

I don't tend to big-up my photography, especially these days. I tend to work behind the scenes, especially for anything from Snowdonia, where I spend most of my time, refining my project and building, what I hope will be, a quality book. However, when I go elsewhere, it is sometimes nice to share what I captured, and I think even I like this one enough to shout about it.

I’ve taken to paying attention to Flickr’s weekly theme. I don’t know why. Hopefully, it’ll motivated me a little — maybe stretch my limits. This week’s theme is #Blue. I only had to stretch to my backyard.

adjective

1. jaunty; cheerful; brisk; pert.

-----

Today was one of those lazy days when it comes to photography, I kept putting off picking up the camera and finally as the light was starting to sink I figured I'd better get moving.

What better for a day of procrastinating than a photo of a motivator... that and I was a little stumped on inspiration and coffee is always a good model!

Anyway hope everyone has had a good day, and a Happy Independence Day to all my American friends!

France, Alsace, Colmar, X-Mas in Colmar, at the end of the year, at Christmas time Colmar turns into a small town like in a fairyland & when it has snowed, one cannot wish for more in a wonderland.

The “jewellery box” among Alsatian cities founded by the Franconian, the first documentary evidence of the town goes back to the year 823 AD. In spite of the many wars over central Europe in the last centuries, Colmar could preserve its beautiful historic centre of the mediaeval town.

Once the sun rose and appeared over the mountains, the sheep fled into the sun to warm themselves from the frosty night.

Sobald die Sonne aufging und über den Bergen erschien, flüchteten die Schafe in die Sonne um sich von der frostigen Nacht zu wärmen.

More than a few people have recently asked me why I'm so obsessed with photographing Table Mountain... and why I'm not shooting anything else?

That is a very fair question. The answer is fairly complex... but we can boil it down to the following 5 motivating factors.

1. Table Mountain is an instantly recognisable natural icon, and thus a perfect subject for a landscape photo.

2. Depending on the tide, the rocks and beach at this location offer an endless supply of interesting foregrounds.

3. Capturing moving water allows for more creative/artistic interpretations... fast or slow... both are interesting.

4. I have a whole headful of ideas for potentially interesting images here... for when the conditions are perfect.

5. I'm essentially a very lazy person... I can be on the beach within 5 minutes of leaving my house. :)

But there is one serious downside to this single-subject strategy of mine.

I am becoming very reluctant to process and post images which are inferior (in my eyes) to the photos of Table Mountain that I've already posted.

Despite shooting here regularly... and as much as I am able to plan and tweak my compositions... a huge part of the success of an image is purely based on luck!

The waves are either going to break perfectly into your composition... just when the clouds and light are at their most interesting... or they're not!

In this photo I managed to capture the perfect wave at the perfect moment... but it was only after the best light had come and gone. :)

I wasn't intending to process and post this shot... but I haven't posted anything in a while now... so I decided to try to make this image look as good as possible.

So... is it possible to put lipstick on a pig? I'll let you be the judge of that. :)

Also from my semi motivated post summer hike, classic b&w this time, but via a false-color development (the 720nm 'winter land scape') first to have more wiggle room for tweaking. The dark field in the foreground was freshly plowed. 🚜

Part of the reason why I'm not very active here recently is that my right hand is still bothering me (the tendon thing), unfortunately. While I was collecting tons of infrared panoramas (~200GB sitting on some disc now) over the summer, in an effort to get away from the computer (clicking, which I couldn't do much of), eventually the active part of my semi-pathetic photographic endeavors came to a screeching halt as well now, since there is really limited sense or appeal in producing heaps of photos without the ability to develop them. 😕

Positive aspect (gotta look out for these too, ..right?); this really showed me the place and value of photography in my / this life 😳, and that surfing Flickr and connecting with what you guys are doin' without sharing some of my own is nice too (..beware of too much inspiration without outlet though). 😧

I picked up reading, which kinda fell dormant in recent times, but I do a lot of now / again. Currently going / tripping down some deep philosophical / metaphysical rabbit hole I had stuck in the back of my mind for years.

Ironically, IR photography partially led to or prepared the ground for this also.. but that's a story for another day. 😜
