Morphie near St Cyrus beach.

Although I'd love to believe that there will be more kayaking this year... in truth it shocks me that on October 23 I could be warmly and peacefully floating in the middle of this gorgeous lake near Banff.

We've been graced with the most wonderful fall and there is, as yet, no real snow up in those mountains. It won't last - winter is coming.

(Me and Morphie - my OruKayak - had the lake all to ourselves.) - Christened Morpheus after the bringer of dreams, and as a nod to his shapeshifting nature.

This old burial ground and church site lies at the foot of tall cliffs overlooking an extensive area of sand dunes and grassland, which is now a nature reserve. There is a long history of worship at this site, which may date back to the 9th century and the Picts.

The common name of the site, Ecclesgreig, is said to mean 'Church of Grig'. Grig was a 9th century ruler of the Picts and is widely credited with establishing a church here. He is also known as Ciric, which is where St Cyrus is derived.

Documentary evidence of a church here only dates from the 1170s and hints at a monastic foundation here too. William The Lion granted the "Church and the Abbey land of Eglesgirg along with the Chapel of St Rule" to the Bishop of St Andrews. The church was later rebuilt and dedicated in 1242. The church fell out of use after 1632, when a new parish church was built in St Cyrus village.

The 19th century historian Andrew Jervise claims that St Cyrus is buried in the burial ground and that the church ruins were covered by sand and exposed again by erosion in c1790.

Description

The site comprises a sub-rectangular walled burial ground (the eastern wall rebuilt in the 19th century). There are a number of burial enclosures and burial aisles, along with many gravestones of mostly 18th - 19th century date. There is now no trace of the church, although it is possible parts of the burial aisles were built using stone from the ruined church. The largest burial aisle is that of the Grahams of Morphie, a roofless rectangular building near the centre of the burial ground. In one corner of the burial ground is a small rubble-built watch house, still complete with stone slab roof, window and chimney. It dates to the early 19th century when precautions had to be taken against the theft of fresh bodies for medical research.

In 1821, Beattie made the acquatnce of a young lady named William Gibson, who was the daughter of his friend, the squire of Stone of Morphie, Robert Gibson. Against her parents wishes, the couple soon contracted a marriage engagement. During the summer of 1822, they would secretly rendezvous in the walled garden of the Gibson owned, but then uninhabited, House of Kinnaber, where was made many vows of fidelity and solemn promises of eternal love. She was proud, aspiring and ambitious whilst he was unreserved, affable and humble. Miss Gibson's affection being sensitive and jealous whilst Beattie's was deeper, more serious and true.

So deeply were the affections of both engaged that a mutual oath, at her behest, was exchanged with these words, "May I never know peace in this world or see God in mercy, if I marry another than you." Yet, solemn as it seems, on the part of Miss Gibson, it proved to have been lightly taken and as lightly broken. The course of true love never yet ran smooth and for poor George Beattie, the darkest of clouds hastily approached. In the spring of 1823 a sudden and fearful "change came o'er the spirit of his dream".

Before the marriage was completed, the young lady fell heir to a small fortune from a wealthy uncle, William Mitchell, Esq., who was the Governor of Grenada. Upon discovering the full extent of the sum bequeathed to her mother and herself, she promptly rejected Beattie for a suitor who occupied a better social rank in life, corn merchant William Smart. Deeply wounded by the disappointment, Beattie from that time meditated self-destruction.

After completing a narrative of his relations with the lady, contained in a history of his life from 1821 to 1823,[9] he provided himself with a pistol purchased in Aberdeen, and, going to St Cyrus, shot himself next to his sister Mary's grave in the Auld Nether Kirkyard on the 29th of September, 1823. He was just 38 years of age.

Stitched Panorama - terrible lighting and raining. Just a recce shot to see if it's worth returning in better weather! Best viewed orginal size.

Yes, that is Bellrock Lighthouse in the distance to the left of Scurdie Ness lighthouse! Unavoidable heat shimmer is marring the image somewhat.

The Stone of Morphie stands atop a small rise in SE Aberdeenshire, north of Montrose and west of the village of St Cyrus. An impressive 10ft stone with interesting whorls, shapes, colours and markings.

Based on several British folk takes, this purse will contain everything you need to keep the bad faeries away should you wander about in the mirk and midnight hour! A traditional druid purse is circular so when you flatten it, a magic circle is formed. Green is the color of the faerie fae and red is a protective color. The outside is a plaid to combine all the sacred colors. Should you ever get lost, simply turn the pouch inside out! The inside is a Celtic cross that also displays The Rune of Saint Patrick, also known as the Faedh Fiada from Ireland's most celebrated folk hero. If you cannot find the real items depicted, then the image should trick the bad folk well enough. You can find out more about these traditions in tales like "The Laird of Morphie & The Water Kelpie" (Rowan Cross) and "The Gold of Fairnilee" (Roman Tear Vial.) Make sure you break a piece from the bannock cake before giving it to a child! You can put salt into the lining of the purse, along with other sacred herbs like red verbena. For added jauntiness and protection, use the plaid border to sew strips along the border from which to hang bells like a Morris Dancer. Good luck!

This is the original file for both the kit and the coordinating plaid with the scanned proofs over them.

msbluesky: Very nice angle!

minkxxx: I'm really happy for you. I'm glad its good. It's what I'll upgrade to when my iPhone 4 contract runs out. I'm buying outright this time though. I hate contracts. Lay-bye here I come! XX mink

minkxxx: Oh... Is it a bigger screen and the new panel/glass? I haven't even looked it up yet (cause I'll then want to bye it on credit). XX mink

iamakittehcouch: @msbluesky thanks. I've been practicing my hip shots. I've beheaded many a person

iamakittehcouch: It's very slim and lightweight but I've encased it in one if those Otterbox cases and so it's rather blocky and a tad wide for my hand. I still love it tho. It's a MAJOR improvement over the 3GS.

iamakittehcouch: @minkxxx Tag tag Tag

minkxxx: I got an otterbox too when I first got this phone (iPhone 4). Very worried about breaking it, i was! I quickly moved to a morphie juice cover for extra battery charging. It's pretty solid back & sides cause of the battery. At the same time I'd like to put it in a slim sexy case to show it off. Cause ya know they are sexy little things. XX mink

Edinburgh-based manufacturers founded by James Ballantine (1808-1877) and George Allan as Ballantine & Allan.

They began making stained glass in the 1830s. In 1843 they won a competition to design windows for the new Houses of Parliament, although in the event they only provided some windows for the House of Lords. James Ballantine was the author of a series of books on the history and techniques of stained glass manufacture.

His son Alexander Ballantine (1841-1906) joined the firm, which was known as Ballantine & Son from about 1860 until 1892, and then Ballantine & Gardiner until 1905, when Herbert Gardiner joined as a partner. From 1905 Alexander Ballantine was joined by his son James Ballantine II (1878-1940), by then the firm was known as A Ballantine & Son. Some work by the firm was signed with the alternative spelling of Ballantyne.
