2D-3D conversion of a morphed Halloween portrait of myself in color.

Because a lot of my sculptural work comes under the umbrella of assemblage I tend to collect large quantities of found objects and materials - always being drawn the things and forms that have a certain resonance, but not always knowing what I will eventually use them in.
In this drawing I have taken a few of these items and, without trying to concern myself too much over matters of how the individual forms relate to each other, I've attempted to morph them all together. This proved to be more easily said than done, as a life time of drawing, awareness of perspective and of trying to accurately create the illusion of 3D forms in a 2D plain can hard wire the brain to following certain rules. None the less I'm quite happy with how it turned out - there are some interesting connections going on. A friend recently said that there was a lot of sexual imagery in the piece. I'm not sure if that says something about him or me.
From the end of September 2012 a very limited edition screen printed version of this pencil drawing will be available. It will be printed on 54 x 52 cm archival paper, using a graphite/ink mix so as to more closely resemble the original drawing. These tiny flowers (compare to the size of a blade of grass) are considered weeds in the context of a lawn. They look very much like a Lobellia, but presumably are not the kind my wife plants in some of her flower plots. Not sure what this flower is called. This picture of this tiny flower has been morphed into abstract art.

I liked the outfit I chose for the ad for Efflorescence that I got the red version and made myself a special version of Efflorescence to match. I wanted to do a picture and wandered around before deciding to take one at Morphe. I tried to make it feel like a painting. I like it ^_^

The 'Morphed Components' prints are based upon one of my pencil drawings, in which I morphed together elements of different found objects and materials that I'd been collecting for use in my sculptures. Unlike my recent speed drawings this one harks back to the draughtsmanship style I used when I first started out as a technical illustrator for one of the big Japanese companies. I found it interesting using the same precise and clinical rendering that I used back then, on something that is personal to what I do now. Some people have said that they find the drawing a bit disturbing but I find it quite relaxing to stare at (the original hangs on the wall at the foot of my bed).
In order to give the prints a subtle pencily (that's not a real word is it?) quality the screen prints were hand-pulled using an ink made with graphite powder. As with all my other screen prints, these are also printed on archival quality paper and each one is signed and editioned. The paper dimensions are 54 x 52 cm and the print run is an edition of 60 plus five artist's proofs. Each print is available for £160 each - but check out my blog because I have been known to have the occassional month-long 50% off sale, when I remove the normal gallery commission (just don't tell the galleries).
