De Gooyer is a windmill in Amsterdam located between Funenkade and Zeeburgerstraat. It is the tallest wooden mill in the Netherlands at 26.6 meters high. It is registered as a National Monument

The names dates from the around 1609, when the mill was owned by Claes and Jan Willemsz, two brothers from Gooiland. It is also known as "The Funenmolen" ("The Mill on the Funen").

The Gooyer consists of a stone foundation topped by a wooden octagonal body. The mill is owned by the municipality of Amsterdam and is not open to visitors. Although the blades are functional, they no longer operate any grinding mechanism.

Next to the mill, in the former municipal bathhouse dating back to 1911, is the Brouwerij 't IJ. The mill and the bathhouse building are unrelated, and the mill fulfils no function for the brewery despite the image of a mill being in the brewery logo.

History

The original mill was constructed in the 16th century. After destruction and some movements, in 1725 the mill stood on the site of the current Orange-Nassau barracks. Finally, in 1814 the mill moved again to its current location on Funenkade on top of the stone base of a watermill that had been demolished in 1812.

This mill is the last of 26 corn mills on the bastions of the 17th century walls of Amsterdam. The location of the mills was at that time very favourable as the outskirts of town provided ample wind.

After the mill had fallen into disrepair, it was purchased in 1928 by the city of Amsterdam for 3200 guilders and restored. Due to the lack of power during the Second World War the mill served as a corn mill for Amsterdam. The sails were damaged on November 13, 1972 during a storm. The upper shaft broke and the blades embedded in the adjacent Nieuwevaart. Some years later the original, old Dutch type blades were restored.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petrified_Forest_National_Park

Petrified Forest National Park is a national park of the United States in Navajo and Apache counties in northeastern Arizona. Named for its large deposits of petrified wood, the park covers about 346 square miles (900 square kilometers), encompassing semi-desert shrub steppe as well as highly eroded and colorful badlands. The park's headquarters is about 26 miles (42 km) east of Holbrook along Interstate 40 (I-40), which parallels the BNSF Railway's Southern Transcon, the Puerco River, and historic U.S. Route 66, all crossing the park roughly east–west. The site, the northern part of which extends into the Painted Desert, was declared a national monument in 1906 and a national park in 1962. The park received 644,922 recreational visitors in 2018.

The Petrified Forest is known for its fossils, especially fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic Epoch, about 225 million years ago. The sediments containing the fossil logs are part of the widespread and colorful Chinle Formation, from which the Painted Desert gets its name. Beginning about 60 million years ago, the Colorado Plateau, of which the park is part, was pushed upward by tectonic forces and exposed to increased erosion. All of the park's rock layers above the Chinle, except geologically recent ones found in parts of the park, have been removed by wind and water. In addition to petrified logs, fossils found in the park have included Late Triassic ferns, cycads, ginkgoes, and many other plants as well as fauna including giant reptiles called phytosaurs, large amphibians, and early dinosaurs. Paleontologists have been unearthing and studying the park's fossils since the early 20th century.

For 137 years, the Hotel del Coronado has stood as a monument to Gilded Age opulence, a place where presidents brushed shoulders with Hollywood’s glitterati, its Victorian architecture a timeless symbol of grandeur.

Following a $160 million restoration on track to be completed by June, the hotel’s historic Victorian neighborhood will be revitalized, blending its 1888 heritage with contemporary luxury.

The Victorian neighborhood’s restoration is part of a $550 million project, a transformation extending across its five distinct neighborhoods — bringing the resort’s total accommodations to 938 guest rooms — as well as its culinary offerings, front porch and lobby, ballrooms and more.

. . . . .

“People think they want an 1888 room,” Petrone remarked, “but I tell them, ‘No, you don’t.’”

The original rooms were sparsely furnished, with hard wooden chairs, small beds and minimal conveniences.

The redesigned interiors now feature botanical-inspired artwork, round mirrors, period-appropriate headboards, plush bedding and expanded bathrooms, marrying historical charm with contemporary luxury.

The Hotel del Coronado, also known as The Del and Hotel Del, is a historic beachfront hotel in Coronado, California, just across San Diego Bay from San Diego. A rare surviving example of an American architectural genre—the wooden Victorian beach resort—it was designated a California Historical Landmark in 1970[4] and a National Historic Landmark in 1977.[3][5] It is the second-largest wooden structure in the United States (after the Tillamook Air Museum in Tillamook, Oregon).

When the hotel opened in 1888, it was the largest resort hotel in the world.[6] It has hosted presidents, royalty, and celebrities, and been featured in numerous films and books.[7]

Western Week in Scottsdale kicks off with the Hash Knife Pony Express delivering the mail 200 miles from Holbrook to the Museum of the West in Scottsdale.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_Spirit:_Scottsdale%27s_Muse...

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is located in Old Town Scottsdale, Arizona on the former site of the Loloma Transit Station (N Marshall Way and E 1st St), and opened in January 2015. The two-story, 43,000-square-foot museum features the art, culture and history of 19 states in the American West, Western Canada, and Mexico.

Opened in 2015, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West was conceived by former Scottsdale mayor Herb Drinkwater (1936-97) who served from 1980-1996. Located in Old Town Scottsdale, Western Spirit is owned by the City of Scottsdale and operated by The Scottsdale Museum of the West, a non-profit organization incorporated in 2007. A Board of Trustees, through the Museum Director, oversees day-to-day operations. The 43,000 square foot museum broke ground on January 20, 2014. The building houses eight exhibition spaces, the 135-seat Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Theater and Auditorium, the Christine and Ted Mollring Sculpture Courtyard, and the Sue and Robert Karatz Museum Store. Western Spirit has been a Smithsonian Affiliate since 2015. From 2016-2021, True West Magazine has named Western Spirit “The Nation’s Best Western Museum.” Notable past exhibitions include: Maynard Dixon’s American West; By Beauty Obsessed: Gilbert Waldman Collects the West; Charles M. Russell: The Women in His Life and Art; Marjorie Thomas: Arizona Art Pioneer; The Taos Society of Artists. Mike Fox served as Director/CEO (2008-2022). Dr. James Burns, former Director of the Arizona Historical Society, took the reins as Executive Director of Western Spirit in October 2021.

Mayor Drinkwater and others who shared his vision saw an opportunity for Scottsdale, known as “The West’s Most Western Town” to establish itself as a center for the study and appreciation of the region’s history, encompassing Indigenous Peoples, Spanish and Mexican settlers, and Western pioneers, and to become a nexus “Where the Old West meets the New West.” Founding Director/ CEO Mike Fox said, “We are not a museum of objects, but a museum of ideas.” Storytelling is the heart of Western Spirit’s mission, immersing visitors in the unique heritage of the region—“illuminating the past to shape our future.” Rotating exhibitions of artworks, artifacts, and cultural objects, interactive experiences, presentations, performances, and events allow visitors to explore and discover the American West for themselves.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kartchner_Caverns_State_Park

Kartchner Caverns State Park is a state park of Arizona, United States, featuring a show cave with 2.4 miles (3.9 km) of passages.[1] The park is located 9 miles (14 km) south of the town of Benson and west of the north-flowing San Pedro River. Long hidden from view, the caverns were discovered in 1974 by local cavers, assisted by state biologist Erick Campbell who helped in its preservation.

The park encompasses most of a down-dropped block of Palaeozoic rocks on the east flank of the Whetstone Mountains.

The caverns are carved out of limestone and filled with spectacular speleothems which have been growing for 50,000 years or longer, and are still growing. Careful and technical cave state park development and maintenance, initially established by founder Dr. Bruce Randall "Randy" Tufts, geologist, were designed to protect and preserve the cave system throughout the park's development, and for perpetuity.[3]

The two major features of the caverns accessible to the public are the Throne Room and the Big Room. The Throne Room contains one of the world's longest (21 ft 2 in (6.45 m))[5] soda straw stalactites and a 58-foot (18 m) high column called Kubla Khan, after the poem. The Big Room contains the world's most extensive formation of brushite moonmilk. Big Room cave tours are closed during the summer for several months (April 15 to October 15) each year because it is a nursery roost for cave bats, however the Throne Room tours remain open year-round.[8]

Other features publicly accessible within the caverns include Mud Flats, Rotunda Room, Strawberry Room, and Cul-de-sac Passage. Approximately 60% of the cave system is not open to the public.[9]

Many different cave formations can be found within the caves and the surrounding park. These include cave bacon, helictites, soda straws, stalactites, stalagmites and others.[12] Cave formations like the stalactites and stalagmites grow approximately a 16th of an inch every 100 years.[13]

Haiku thoughts:

Beneath earth's cool veil,

Stalactites in silence grow,

Whispers of stone deep.

After Window Rock, my son and I continued our Navajo Nation Adventure by heading west to the Hubbell Trading Post outside of Ganado. This is the monument sign at the entrance.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubbell_Trading_Post_National_Histo...

Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site is a historic site on Highway 191, north of Chambers, with an exhibit center in Ganado, Arizona. It is considered a meeting ground of two cultures between the Navajo and the settlers who came to the area to trade.

In 1878, John Lorenzo Hubbell purchased this trading post, ten years after Navajos were allowed to return to the Ganado region from their U.S.-imposed exile in Bosque Redondo, Fort Sumner, New Mexico. This ended what is known in Navajo history as the "Long Walk of the Navajo."

It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960.[3][4]

Trade with men like Hubbell became increasingly important for the Navajos. The trader was in contact with the world outside the newly created reservation; a world which could supply the staples the Navajos needed to supplement their homegrown products. In exchange for the trader's goods the Navajos traded wool, sheep and, later, rugs, jewelry, baskets and pottery. It was years before cash was used between trader and Navajos.

Hubbell family members operated this trading post until it was sold to the National Park Service in 1967. The trading post is still active, operated by the non-profit Western National Parks Association, which maintains the trading traditions the Hubbell family established.

wnpa.org/hubbell-trading-post/

Today, Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site is still situated on the original 160-acre (65 ha) homestead, which includes the trading post, family home, out buildings, land and a visitor center. Visitors can experience this historic trading post on the Navajo Nation, which includes weaving demonstrations; and the store still maintains a wooden floor and walls from the days of old. A set of initials carved on the gate of the privacy wall which separates the public spaces from the private stand for John Lorenzo Hubbell.

Mr. Hubbell homesteaded 160 acres (0.6 km2) before they were part of the reservation and territory. When the reservation expanded, it surrounded the Hubbell property. Through an act of Congress Mr. Hubbell got permission to keep his home. Freight wagons brought supplies fifty-six miles to the store from the little railroad town of Gallup, New Mexico, two to four days' travel in good weather. Going back to Gallup, freight wagons hauled huge sacks of wool.

I am glad I choose to get this sign today. There is some remodeling going on with the facade of the Three Flames (more stucco otherwise.....) I think if that is happening, the rest of the center might get it and this sign could potentially be removed for those smaller less exciting monument signs.

Also, the Straw Hat Pizza sign is half removed, it is gone on one side, but still on the other side.

The exterior signage package for this location of Metropolitan Market included a monument sign with an amber electronic message center displayed underneath. Click here for more supermarket design project portfolios.
