Eyes Over Puget Sound combines high-resolution photo observations with satellite images, ferry data from travel between Seattle and Victoria BC, and measurements from our moored instruments. We use a seaplane to travel between our monitoring stations because they are so far apart. Once a month, we take photos of Puget Sound water conditions and turn those out, along with data from our stations, in the monthly Eyes Over Puget Sound report.

Has anyone reading this ever set up monitors so they are backed up against a northern window?
How was it? Could you still view the monitors without strain? Were the monitors washed out? Note that we're talking about northern light from the window, so it is indirect light.
I am thinking of moving my workstation against the window because:
a) I want to look out the window more often
-and-
b) To free up space on the wall where my workstation currently exists.
If you have set up your workstation this way, thanks for sharing your experience with me.
Following the success of the USS Monitor, many other ships of a similar design were created for the North. The monitor USS Catskill was one of many. She first reported for duty in February of 1863, as part of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Arriving in Port Royal, South Carolina in March of 1865, she spent the rest of the war participating in the blockade of Charleston. During one of these missions the Commanding Officer (Commander Rodgers) was killed when the ship was shelled by Confederate guns on shore.
Following the war, she returned to the Philadelphia Naval Yard and was decommissioned in July of 1865. During this time many of the Civil War era ships were placed in reserve for the possibility of future service.
In 1873, she was called back to service and was commissioned in 1875 but was again put in storage in 1877. With the outbreak of the Spanish-American war in 1898, she was once again brought back for service. This last commission lasted only from April to September of 1898 when she was once again put in storage. Finally in December of 1901 she was sold for scrap and stricken from the Navy records.

An image from my archives, taken on 4 April 2010, at the Calgary Zoo. Unfortunately, the Australia House at the Zoo has been shut down since then, as it was so badly in need of repair.
"Varanus salvadorii, first described in 1878, is the largest species of monitor lizard found in New Guinea, and is believed to be one of the longest lizards in the world, reaching up to 244 cm (8.0 ft). It is an arboreal lizard with a dark green body and yellowish bands, a blunt snout and a very long tail. It lives in mangrove swamps and coastal rain forests in the southeastern part of the island, where it feeds on birds, small mammals, eggs, and carrion in the wild, using teeth that are better adapted than those of most monitors for seizing fast-moving prey. Like all monitors it has anatomical features that enable it to breathe more easily when running than other lizards can, and V. salvadorii is thought to have greater stamina than most monitors. Little is known about its reproduction and development, as the species is very difficult to breed in captivity.
V. salvadorii is threatened by deforestation and poaching, and is protected by the CITES (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species) agreement. The lizard is hunted and skinned alive by tribesmen to make drums, who describe the monitor as an evil spirit that "climbs trees, walks upright, breathes fire, and kills men". However they also say that it gives them warnings if there are crocodiles nearby." From Wikipedia.
Spending the day high up in the trees, not sure whether it's for safety, to sunbath after the rain, or to catch some food!
Tucked away on a side-road off of Highway 2, the average passerby heading to or from Wenatchee likely doesn't even heed Monitor, a town named renamed in 1902 from Brown's Flat in order to commemorate the famous Union ironclad of the Civil War. The monitor zip code, 98836, serves a grand total of 342 people.
Having seen one lizard in the undergrowth earlier on our walk, when we got to the lake we couldn't believe that there were two more swimming in the water, and they came very close to the viewing platform.
Monitor lizards are a group of lizards belonging to the Varanidae family. There are more than 70 species that vary in size all look alike but outwardly strong.

Ben caught this angry little monitor lizard on the island... as he's always wanted to, and I thought it looked like such a little velociraptor!
