What a little oddity this booklet is. An obvious subject to remind firemen of - the 'good way' to fire a steam locomotive to allow for best performance of the locomotive, the most economic performance and even the reduction in heavy, black smoke that could (and did) lead to public complaint.
That said the style is a real mix - echoes of early 'Puffin Picture Books" but cruder and the fact it shows no real obvious 'ownership' of British Railways. At the time the Commission did issue many of the Railway Executive's publications but there was agenral house style that this does not conform to and to see the words 'Railway Division" is very unusual.
Better safe than sorry! You never know in the current global economic scenario!

“Metallic"
One day I was walking through the store and I saw a package of these light bulbs, on the front it said "SAVE$70 ON YOUR ELECTRIC BILL." Hmmm? I thought about it for a while and then I bought ten packages and rushed home. With great excitement I showed the light bulbs to my wife and explained to her how I had just saved us $700 and with this new found wealth I was heading down to the camera store to by myself a new lens. I could see by the look on her face that she did not like my Bright Idea.
Though social life for most people is now very limited due to our self-consuming lifestyle. Yet there are some invitations that we just can’t say no to. Office schedules bends for no one so there is just one escape to dress appropriately and never refuse to a happening place and that is online shopping.

The IKEA Melltorp table top "floats" above the legs slightly, hard to capture with an iPhone snap, but with the plywood detail we think it looks great.
Looking at the information and samples in the DIY shop this looked like the best for what we wanted. Fingers crossed!
One reason plywood appealed to us is the stripped/layered sides. The Danish Oil really brought this out well.
This is the plywodd offcut. It's 22mm plywood, the nice man at the timber yard chopped it down to the table top dimensions. £3.45 well spent.

Whoops no, those are 3 Hellenbrand brand water softeners. Home water softeners were a huge 1980s sales trend, I can remember the enormous mountains of soapsuds you could make w/ "soft water." I can remember hearing those machines gurgling late at night in the basements of houses.
Everybody stopped baking in tanningbeds once the American Academy of Dermatologists started warning everybody about how dangerous the practice was, and the gov't banned tanningparlors as a moneysaving anticancer effort.
Ya almost can't spell Hellenbrand w/o hellbound!

Not messing around and not trying a small area first, I used an old t-shirt and applied the Danish Oil liberally to all sides of the plywood offcut

It is 1.35am and we are making our way to catch the airport bus.
Skylink operates 24 hours a day and can be hailed at a stop approximately a couple of hundred metres from our front door.
But first we have to a new experience to encounter - part night street light operation. Our street has in the last couple of days been converted to operate in this way.
Luckily for us the sky is clear and there is a full moon. The street feels like there is a power cut in place.
The street lights on the corners of the area still operate all through the night.
From here: www.leics.gov.uk/index/highways/road_pathway_maintenance/...
"After carrying out a risk assessment we will be part-night lighting streets in residential areas in consultation with local communities. The street lights will turn off at midnight until 5.30am (+/- 15 minutes)."
Homemade knit machine tools. Saving LOTS of money.
The garter bar (at bottom) cost about 90-110 usd to buy. The homemade one is not as easy to use, but at least lots of money saved. Garter bar is used when you want to turn the work from back to front. The machine only knits stockinette so if I want to make garter stitch I have to turn around every side. That would be quite impractical really, so this is good to use when you want to make wide "stripes" of knits and purls. (like 10x knits rows, 10x purls rows)
Saved 90-110 usd plus expensive shipping for very long item. I made this after some failed attempts, finally I made out of hair decoration pieces (diadem like thing out of zig zag plastic) 3 of them cost totally 75 SEK (10 usd?), not too bad, could be cheaper but the thing is probably out of fashion because I could only find them at one place.
The weights to right are fabric bags filled with pebbles, with X hook mounted on the top. The most "improvized" looking thing but it works very well.
I made six weights. Two weighs are costing $15 plus shipping for heavy item. So I saved $45 there.
The hair pin thingies are "transfer tool", used to move two or three stitches on the machine. To do fashioned decreased, to do cables, to do other kind of manipulations. I made them by baking into Fimo clay.
2x 3-prong tools cost 10 usd. 2x2 prong tools cost 10 usd aswell. 20 usd saved there.
The tools really work very well too. :)
