The construction of the monastery and church began on 6 January 1501, and was completed 100 years later.

Manuel I selected the religious order of Hieronymite monks to occupy the monastery, whose role it was to pray for the King's eternal soul and to provide spiritual assistance to navigators and sailors who departed from the port of Restelo to discover lands around the world.

The Monastery of Ostrog (Serbian: Манастир Острог/Manastir Ostrog, pronounced [ǒstroɡ]) is a monastery of the Serbian Orthodox Church sitatued against an almost vertical background, high up in the large rock of Ostroška Greda, in Montenegro. It is dedicated to Saint Basil of Ostrog (Sveti Vasilije Ostroški), who was buried here. From the monastery, a superb view of the Bjelopavlići plain can be seen. The monastery is located 50km from Podgorica and 15km from Nikšić. Ostrog monastery is the most popular pilgrimage place in Montenegro.

The Monastery was founded by Vasilije, the Metropolitan Bishop of Herzegovina in the 17th century. He died there in 1671 and some years later he was glorified. His body is enshrined in a reliquary kept in the cave-church dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God to the Temple.

The present-day look was given to the Monastery in 1923-1926, after a fire which had destroyed the major part of the complex. Fortunately, the two little cave-churches were spared and they are the key areas of the monument. The frescoes in the Church of the Presentation were created towards the end of the 17th century. The other church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, is placed within a cave on the upper level of the monastery and was painted by master Radul, who successfully coped with the natural shapes of the cave and laid the frescoes immediately on the surface of the rock and the south wall. Around the church are the monastic residences, which together with the church building and the scenery make this monument outstandingly beautiful.

The Orthodox monastery of Ostrog is one of the most frequently visited on the Balkans. It attracts over 100,000 visitors a year. It is visited by believers from all parts of the world, either individually or in groups. It represents the meeting place of all confessions: the Orthodox, the Catholics and the Muslims. According to the stories of pilgrims, by praying by his body, many have been cured and helped in lessening the difficulties in their lives.

Upper Monastery

The upper monastery houses the Church of the Presentation and the Church of the Holy Cross. Saint Basil of Ostrog's relics lie in the Church of the Presentation. Also of interest is the vine which grows out of the rock. It's said that it's a miracle because nothing should be able to grow out of the sheer rock face.

Lower Monastery

Lower Church

The lower monastery centers around the Church of the Holy Trinity that was built in 1824. It also makes up most of the monk residences. There are dorm rooms available for pilgrims here too.

It is traditional for pilgrims to walk the 3km from the lower monastery to the upper monastery barefoot. Before entering the Church of the Presentation to pray before Saint Basil of Ostrog, pilgrims make a donation of clothing, blankets or consumables like soap for the monks. The monastery celebrates its feast day on 12th May every year. St Basil died on 29th April in the Orthodox calendar which equates to 12th May in the Gregorian calendar.

Utstein Monastery is Norway’s only preserved medieval monastery. It lies in beautiful surroundings on the island of Mosterøy, a 30 minutes drive from Stavanger. The monastery is today a museum.

The site of Utstein Monastery is mentioned in historical records dating back to the Eleventh Century, when it was mentioned as having been a farm belonging to King Harald Fairhair after the Battle of Hafrsfjord in 872.

Arnota Monastery is located in Costeşti commune, Vâlcea County, Oltenia, and it is one of Romania’s most valuable monuments, famous for its architectural style, sculptures and paintings. Initially a monastery for monks, today it is (since 1999) a convent for nuns. It is consecrated to Saint Archangels Michael and Gabriel and its dedication day is 8 November.

The monastery was erected by ruling prince Matei Basarab (1632-1654), between 1634-1636. Under the church of the monastery were found the traces of an older church. It is said that the ruler Matei Basarab decided to build this monastery on the site of the household where he found shelter in a difficult time, when he was chased by the Turks.

The monastery was renovated by ruling prince Constantin Brâncoveanu (1689-1714) between 1705 and 1706. He also added a porch with a belfry, and replaced the iconostasis and the front door carved in chestnut wood. He ordered the painting to be restored, with special precautions not to damage the previous layers.

The Govora Monastery is an active monastery of the Romanian Orthodox Church , which was of primary importance for the existence of Slavic writing in the Danubian Principalities in the pre- Enlightenment era .

The Chrysobull of September 27, 1485, is the oldest surviving written text attesting to the monastery's existence. This means it was built during the reign of Vlad Dracula . However, there is archaeological evidence that an older building from the time of Mircea the Old may have existed here .

The name of the monastery is not disputed even among Romanian linguists, and it means what is understood in Russian.

In 1637, Matei Basarab established the second printing press in the history of Wallachia in the monastery (after the one brought from Montenegro to Targovishte in the early 16th century ), which was brought from Kiev (a gift from Peter Mogila ). In 1640, the monks Miletiy Macedonian and Stefan Ohridski printed the " Rules of Dialogue " in the monastery printing house, which are actually the Kormchaya Kniga ( The Kormchaya Book ).

Current painting dates from the restoration of the church by abbot Paisie, late 17th or early 18th century.

Redemptoristenklooster (Redemptorist monastery). This 18th century monastery (build 1729-1733) was originally build after instructions of Ferdinand von Plettenberg, who then possessed the Wittem fiefdom. It was first used by Capuchin monks but later became the first settlement of the redemptorists in the Netherlands, who still inhabit the monastery. The holy Gerard Majella is especially honored here and in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium this monastery is known as a pilgrimage destination. The monastery and adjoining church are both National Heritage Sights.

There's a beautiful library which is used for lectures, expositions and other cultural and religious activities. In order to gain the financial means to support the massive building, the old brewery was restored in recent years and now serves to produce the monasteries own beer, "Gerardus Wittems Kloosterbier". There's also a small bookstore. [Wikitravel]

'The Monastery of Horezu was founded in 1690 by Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu in the town of Horezu, Wallachia, Romania. It is considered to be a masterpiece of "Brâncovenesc style", known for its architectural purity and balance, the richness of its sculpted detail, its treatment of religious compositions, its votive portraits, and its painted decorative works. The monastery has been inscribed by UNESCO on its list of World Heritage Sites.' (Wikipedia)

Hiding in a mountain fold formed by the Iskar river which weaves its way across the Balkan range, the monastery is a peaceful and restful pace. However, it history is full of violence, having been burned several times through the centuries. And yet, it is still there, rebuilt and functioning again, hopefully to remain this way for long time.

The road passes barely hundreds of meters away from the monastery and yet, if it was not for a small sign, I would have never known it was there.

In the basement of Siavo Monastery, the Monks continue brew beer as they have since the 16th century. The Monks brew in the main room with storage and bottling performed in the back alcove.

Day 2 of @rebellug Vignweek build, this one took me awhile to settle on an idea/concept. And finally settled on something close to my heart that seemed fun to build. I spent way too long figuring out the floor pattern as per usual ... and I thought cube city was annoying...

I also found a fun 'Eli style castle greeble' to fill out the arch windows for a more monastery vibe - pretty happy I figured something out.

I have a bunch more Vignweek entries coming up ... just wanted to take some time and clean and tweak some of the other builds.

The Monastery is quite large, roughly double the size of the Treasury. It's quite a challenge to get up to the Monastery, and then to climb higher to get the overview shot that shows how the Monastery blends into the hills. That higher perch gives you a 360-degree panorama, which is well worth the climb on a clear day.

The monastery of Tatev (Armenian : Տաթեվ, Russian: Татев) - established in 895 - is located in the Tatev village. The term "Tatev" usually refers to the monastery. The monastery always performed an important role in the history of the region, becoming its political, spiritual and cultural center.
