This shot was taken around sunset in Mojave National Preserve near the Teutonia Peak Trail. This trail passes through an area with the highest density of Joshua Trees anywhere in the world. I used HDR to help balance the light between the foreground and sky. HSS

One of the few manifest trains amongst the parade of intermodal traffic on BNSF's Southern Transcon Route, is seen traversing through the baron desert landscapes of southern California, on a very hot June morning.

The rapidly fading sunlight does its best to illuminate the nose of a snoozing SD59MX idling at the south end of Mojave yard.

A pair of road units sit at the south end of the yard in Mojave. This yard fields several local freights to the nearby cement and mineral loaders, but these heavy trains have rated modern road power for most of their existence.
Touring the American Southwest at the moment, with Red Rock Canyon as our first scenic stop.
That day we hiked up to Turtlehead Peak; oh boy and oh joy, what a strenuous and tough hike it was!
This picture was taken in the parking lot of the trailhead, overlooking Sandstone Quarry. We hung back to catch the sunset which wasn't much due to the clouds but the short-lived afterglow was gorgeous.
