A lonely highway stretches into the desert at the Mojave National Preserve, California.

One of the few manifest trains amongst the parade of intermodal traffic on BNSF's Southern Transcon Route, is seen traversing through the baron desert landscapes of southern California, on a very hot June morning.

And thou shalt give me health, life and old age,

a long reign, strength to all my limbs; sight to my

eyes, hearing to my ears and pleasure to my heart

daily. And thou shalt give me to eat until I am full,

and thou shalt give me to drink unto drunkenness,

and thou shalt promote my seed to be kings in

this country to eternity. And thou shalt make me

content every day, thou shalt listen to my voice in

whatever I shall say to thee and grant me very

high Nile floods to furnish thy offerings and to

furnish the offerings of the gods and goddesses.

Thou shalt preserve all the people of thy land,

their cattle and their trees, which thy hand has

made. For it is thou who hast made them all,

thou canst not abandon them to pursue another

design with them, for that would not be right.

-- prayer to the god Osiris from Pharaoh Ramses IV,

circa 1150 BC.

This was taken from the top of Dante's View in the Amargosa Range looking almost due west across Death Valley to Telescope Peak, the highest point in the Panamint Range at over 11,000 feet.

Death Valley is 282 feet below sea level. It holds the world record for hottest recorded temperature at 134 degrees at Greenland Ranch in 1913. It is also the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere located on dry land.

Death Valley proper is essentially a relatively narrow north-south oriented valley formed by the Panamint Range to the west and the Amargosa Range to the east and is open at both ends, north and south as both defining ranges lose elevation at the extreme ends.

A pair of road units sit at the south end of the yard in Mojave. This yard fields several local freights to the nearby cement and mineral loaders, but these heavy trains have rated modern road power for most of their existence.
