Ein See mitten in Sanddünen. Unmöglich ? Weit gefehlt ! Solche Seen gibt es in der Wüste Gobi des öfteren. Auf google maps lassen sie sich nordöstlich der Stadt Zhangye zu hunderten ausmachen. Die Existenz dieses Sees unweit der Stadt Dunhuang ist seit 2000 Jahren historisch belegt. Die aus dem See aufsteigende Feuchtigkeit durchfeuchtet die bis zu 300 m hohen Sanddünen um den See herum, so dass diese nicht wandern und der See versandet, artesisch aufsteigendes Quellwasser speist den See zusätzlich. Seht Ihr das Eis auf dem See ? Es war sehr, sehr kalt...

A lake in the middle of sand dunes. Impossible ? Far from it ! Such lakes are common in the Gobi Desert. There are hundreds of it northeast of Zhangye on google maps. The existence of this lake near the city of Dunhuang has been historically documented for 2000 years. The moisture rising from the lake moisturizes the up to 300 m high sand dunes around the lake, so that they do not wander and the lake silted up, artesian spring water also feeds the lake.
Do you see the ice on the lake ? It was quite cold that day.

since i got tagged 3x... i decided to split the difference, and do a "head to toe" coverage -- with 10 tidbits, twice. (this ought to hold all of you for quite awhile! ;-)

11. i was born six weeks early. i don't believe i've been early to anything else, since.
12. many moons ago, i blind-dated a silken-smooth-voiced radio dj that i met when i called the station to request a song (in those days, that's how it was done :-).
it was "games without frontiers," by peter gabriel, to be exact. (a moth to the synthesizer flame ♫♪♫) sadly, he had a face made for radio... a case of myth not matching the man.
13. i could watch a crackling fire for hours. indoors or out.
14. one year, for christmas, i bought vintage winter coats for my whole family at the goodwill. vintage then, as it is now, was hip & happenin'. turns out, the coat i bought my dad was exactly like one he had received as military issue in the air force, twenty years prior -- and in fact, had been donated. a case of good idea, gone bad. (however, between you 'n me -- i still am convinced those coats were fab!)
15. i love reality tv. i know that's sick, but i cannot help it.
16. my favorite food... has to be... cheese. on things, in things, instead of things. it will be part of my epitaph: "she loved her family, life... and cheese. the end."
17. my 50-yard dash record (6.3 sec) from the 6th grade, still stands at my elementary school. that's many generations of slow kids roaming the halls since.
18. i put on the sterling toe-ring that i bought myself on my first trip to hawaii, 11 years ago, and i have never taken it off. and to anyone who wonders: no, it doesn't bother me at all -- with, or without shoes.
19. i have a savant-like* memory and uncanny ability to recall detail... a friend in the medical transcription business tells me this is referred to as, 'eidetic.' sometimes it's a blessing, sometimes... a curse. (* term used somewhat loosely, and doesn't apply to mathematics or facts always considered as useful ;-)
20. i've never been arrested. yet. and if i ever do, i hope it's for protesting against/for something i believe in with all my heart.

I've been on a bit of a beauty bender recently. ;P
I needed a black mascara so thought I'd try this out. The mascara smells like the dolly girl perfume which is weird to me (do eyeballs really smell that bad??) but it covers well so I won't complain.
Besides the winking mascara tube makes it worth it. ;)

Not finding a larger body of water, the hippo was resting in a small pool not much larger than its body hunkering down to stay cool. You could see the animal was not very comfortable there with its skin turning pink, so when our jeep approached the hippo got up and started walking away. This is my third image of the hippo. You can see another one in the first comment section.
Hippos secrete a reddish oily fluid sometimes called "blood sweat" from special glands in their skin. But the fluid is not sweat. Unlike sweat, which some mammals (including humans) secrete onto their skin, where it evaporates and therefore cools the body, this fluid functions as a skin moisturizer, water repellent and antibiotic. It appears red when exposed to full sunlight, which led the first European discoverers in Africa to call it "blood sweat."
Hippos mostly try to avoid direct sunlight by lying in water during the day and feeding at night. Their skin is very sensitive to both drying and sunburn, so the secretion acts like an automatic skin ointment. It also protects the skin from becoming waterlogged when a hippo is in the water. The detailed chemical composition of this secretion, which is unique to hippos, remains something of a mystery.

#TimeForCrab continues! This year we invite all builders across the community and the globe to participate in a month-long open crab collab, spanning June 22 to July 22. The task is simple:
1. Build a crab
2. Post your crab with the tag #timeforcrab
3. Repeat!
All crustaceans are welcome, and your build can be anything recognizably crustacean-inspired. Be it an actual crab, a fantasy crab, a mech, a spaceship, a castle or anything else - just make it vaguely resemble crab! The primary venues of Time for Crab are Flickr and Instagram, but feel free to share your crabs far and wide. Spread the word, and invite your friends to join!
The ambition is to make this an annually recurring month-long open collab, always taking place in this same timeframe. Let's get the ball rolling.
