I love software and I love hardware, and I love making music. I’m not sure I’ve ever found a more exciting combination than my DIY modular synth, VCV Rack – the amazing free and open source virtual modular synth – and all the ways I can use them together!

Here’s a patch I’ve been working on. Various modules in VCV Rack on my computer generate voltages, which are converted into OSC messages using the fantastic Trowasoft cvOSCcv module. These messages are then converted to MIDI messages using python (specifically mididings), then serial messages using ttymidi, which are routed via USB into an arduino that is embedded in my modular (I call it “mission control”). These messages trigger 6 different binary (on/off) voltages, which I then use to trigger things in the analog world.

Whew! I sure do love connecting things to other things, whether it’s software, hardware, or both.

Then the sounds made on my modular are sent back into VCV Rack and then mixed with digital sounds. Can you tell which sounds are analog and which are digital/software?

TL;DR? Software + hardware = Whoohoo!

Is this music weird? You betcha.
