Situada en la emblemática Costa Blanca, bajo las faldas de la Sierra de Bernia, Altea enamora a primera vista por su cuidado casco antiguo de fachadas blancas y cúpulas de cerámica azul además de sus 8 kilómetros de costa con varias playas.

El nombre de Altea podría provenir del griego Althaia, que significa “yo curo”, o bien de la palabra árabe andalusí aṭṭalaye’ (atalaya) que da lugar en valenciano a la palabra Talaia. Se han encontrado vestigios en el término de íberos, romanos y musulmanes.

Durante la última fase del dominio musulmán, Altea perteneció a la taifa de Denia. Fue conquistada en 1244 por Jaime I de Aragón obteniendo carta puebla en 1279, otorgada por el rey Pedro III de Aragón.
