There is a certain irony to the police conducting stops below a sign that says "Slim your wallet" as rumour has it that they sometimes expect bribes in order to not detain you for a long time.

Lolita Singahan is one of many Filipinos benefiting from the USAID Microenterprise Access to Banking Services program that disbursed loans to borrowers and provides mobile banking services. With the mobile services, Singahan no longer has to make the six-hour trek to and from the bank.

Now that Lolita Singahan is enrolled in the USAID-supported mobile banking service in the Philippines, she simply texts withdrawal instructions from her mobile phone to the bank each payday. The bank then checks her balance and sends the requested funds via mobile money to her "mobile wallet." Singahan can now spend more time with her children, supporting their education, and less time traveling to receive her money.

Lolita Singahan, a 52-year-old school teacher no longer has to take a motorcycle ride into the port of Hula-Hula and then a boat ride, followed by yet another motorcycle ride (this one three hours long) to Imelda where her loan-providing bank is located. USAID's partnership with the Rural Bankers Association of the Philippines trains banks in microfinance best practices, and mobile banking has emerged as a valuable tool to eliminate travel time.
