I took this shot about an hour after MNSSHP ended. I had alot of things working against me. Tons of people still in the park, construction workers continuously opening the doors and the giant crane hanging lights on the castle for Christmas.
Luckily all of those things came together in my favor on this shot. The people stayed behind me, the construction workers ghosted out and the crane was yet to extend.

With the announcement of the cancellation of Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party this year due to the pandemic, I wanted to share one shot from last year that I reprocessed. Enjoy!
Let's head back to this past October for the MNSSHP parade. This area, where I was standing is my favorite place to stand for parades. On my last trip, I was aggravated to find out that this is now a reserved area. Do they really need to add special standing room parades now? Have a magical day!
For those of you who have a hard time getting the hitching hiking ghosts at the end of the Haunted Mansion ride, all you have to do is photograph them during the MNSSHP parade. I have to admit, it's a lot easier and you will get less aggravated..LOL. Have a magical day!
One of my favorite things to do is photograph parades. This past Halloween, we finally made it back for the MNSSHP and this time, I had a lot better equipment then the first time we had gone; There was much more stuff to see and photograph as well. Sometimes, it's really hard to get those nice crisp shots with a little point and shoot camera. I think having better equipment made for better shots. Have a magical day!
Character shots are always some of my favorite shots to do. The expressions they give just add so much more to the photo. This was shot during last years MNSSHP with my 70-200 which is my go-to lens for night parades and any other parades for that matter. Have a magical day!

MNSSHP is a blast and the fireworks show Hallowishes is one of my most favorite shows to photograph! The colors of the bursts are spectacular and the music is just plain fun! This show is certainly a must do for me!
This was taken about 30 minutes after MNSSHP ended. The crowds were very light to begin with so before midnight Main Street was already empty.
This is a 3 shot HDR that I processed using the new software from Nik, HDR Efex Pro. I really like how simple it is to use and have got results I am happy with so far. It works great with Lightroom and takes very little time to process. The processing is a little more over the top that I normally prefer but I like the way it worked on this shot. I especially like the way the buildings on the left side look.

The new fireworks show for MNSSHP is fun, with a few great sections to photograph like this one, but I think HalloWishes is still the better show.
Unquestionably, the lighting during MNSSHP, and the atmosphere in general, is awesome. However, with regard to the Haunted Mansion, the lighting goes from being its normal much-too-dark to an overly vibrant, prone to blown highlights color. Maybe others have had better luck photographing it, but I found that I had to go fairly deep into the negatives with my exposure compensation just to get a usable shot (even here, I still have some blown areas). Thankfully I was bracketing some of these shots in anticipation of doing HDR, as without that -2, I wouldn't have anything usable.
I think Disney needs to consult photographers when planning these lighting arrangements... ;)

It's rather annoying that you can't exactly be sure how high the fireworks are going to be when you set up your shot. This is a 16mm lens with 180 degree field of view. I angled it up for the fireworks bursts but that introduced a modicum of distortion. I also wasn't sure how far around the perimeter bursts for MNSSHP Hallowishes would extend.
So we are left with this. I think of this kind of shot as a "two fer". You get the Contemporary and it's endlessly fascinating parking lot and then there is the mess that is happening on the right with the fireworks.
The Boo To You Halloween Parade, only available during the Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party, is a great time to get all your favorite Disney characters dressed up in their costumes. It's also a good time to get those characters that you wouldn't be able to see roaming around the park. Will you be at MNSSHP this year? Have a magical day!
107 seconds of HalloWishes Fireworks. This one was shot during the Pixelmania MNSSHP meet two weeks ago. I struggled shooting fireworks on this trip and ended up with a lower than normal number of keepers. The ones that turned out, I'm very happy with. I guess I need to practice more this year.

These ramblings will best be understood by other Disney Parks Photographers so bear with me and read along if you'd like some insight as to how these images were crafted.
Photographing fireworks always present a unique challenge, especially during a special event like the Hallowishes show put on during Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party.
The party itself is a mash of exhausting "Must Photograph" shows and events and you will find yourself scurrying from here to there, setting up and breaking down your equipment in a flurry of activity and masses of guests.
In the mad rush of trying to capture all of the party activities you can never be quite sure of just exactly where you will be standing when the fireworks go off. That perfect spot you had your mind's eye on before hand could be blocked by a group of guests. Adjustments must be made on the fly and that one tall Dad with a 12 year old on his shoulders can ruin all your shots.
You also can't be exactly sure of how to set up your camera so that all the bursts will be in frame. If you err on the side of caution and go wide you risk having the key elements in your composition too small. If you zoom in you might miss the higher bursts and eliminate the perimeter shots. Often time you find yourself setting up your equipment in near darkness and the pressure is on to be sure and get the settings exactly right. One forgotten adjustment and your shots could be ruined! Needless to say that photographing the fireworks during this event is not for the faint of heart.
I wish I could say that I successfully captured every burst sequence from the show but that was not to be. I would have to attend every party and practice incessantly until I got the timing and the camera settings just right. There is a range of difficulty in capturing these bursts because the colors and intensity of the light changes with each sequence. The camera sensor does not like the intense blue and purple colors that are used on the Castle from time to time and the ultra bright white fireworks are every photographer's nightmare as they "blow out" the sensor. Add to the mix the fact that you are manually opening and closing the shutter at different time intervals and, well... things can get 'interesting'...
Now we get to the part where I talk about what one does with these fireworks shots. For the most part, Disney Parks Photography fans would just take one exposure, process it in Photoshop or the orphan software known as Lightroom and post it on their respective photo sharing site.
I'm always thinking of new ways that I can try and make my photography more interesting. I really should be typing "I am always thinking of new ways to drive myself crazy with my Disney Parks photography" but I went crazy a long time ago, so that's a given to anyone who knows me.
I took my inspiration for this latest effort from, of all places, Google Drive. I was backing up all 700 gigabytes of my Disney photographic work when Google kept detecting strings of highly similar photographs that could be turned into GIF's . It was fun to play with these and make some myself but the software that Google was using was just taking raw images, converting them into jpegs with out any appreciable photo processing and inserting them into a GIF. Sometimes the subject strung together was amenable to this treatment but other times it was lacking.
I thought it would be cool to take my photographs from one of the Hallowishes fireworks shows that I attended and process each of them to bring out their finest colors and details. A GIF was not flexible enough so I had to make a video. The good news about a video versus a GIF is that I can be more creative in other ways.
I slugged through 22 images using a preset I developed and then tweaked each photo based on the wonky challenges like the super bright magnesium bursts or the sensor jarring deep blue/purple Castle light effects. I also had to crop each image to an identical size, which was a PITA because there is no preset for that (that I know of). Humorously I had to resort to using tiny corners of post it notes stuck on my screen to serve as cropping registration marks for each photo. If I didn't get the cropping just right the image would judder as it scrolled through and all that processing work on 22 images would be for naught for the purposes of making a video.
So some days it's darts, other days it's horse shoes. Hopefully this little project looks cool and you enjoy it. It's not perfect but hopefully it brings you to these moments and while viewing these images you can feel like you were there... and trust me, it was really cool to be there... (You should go yourself and experience a Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party!)
