Today's #ds106 Daily Create was the idea of my friend Ben, who loves the Daily Create. He wanted us to create a board game about ds106.

tdc.ds106.us/tdc846/

MOOCOPOLY is the game of teaching massively, openly online and includes the range of players from ds106, CCK08 to the Stanford trio, MITx, and more. Take your chance and many you will have community or not.

Quan guayta cap a vall, l'aygua vehina

del riu li dona espill y l'horta encants;

y guaytant cap amunt, toca amb les mans

y conversa amb la lluna y la boyrina.

Pugemhi, donchs... l'escala cargolada

qu'als ulls dona mareig y al cor neguit

sembla qu'estigui desde'l cel penjada.

Y amunt, amunt, ja ets dalt, ara, esperit,

si't sents d'áliga'l cor, pren revolada,

"Now look, I've told you a lot of details here. I've told you a lot of details partly because I lived through all this. And this actually is roughly the boundaries of my own scientific career today.

But I told you a lot of details because there's something important to learn about this, which is very hard to learn in an introductory biology course. Most introductory biology courses, you learn about what we know today. A lot of the reason I've tried to talk about the history is because I want you to get a sense of the pace of change. Because it isn't going to stop. That's the important thing. It's one thing to get a point estimate of our current knowledge. It's much more interesting to know the derivative of knowledge, the rate of

change of knowledge. This is the rate of change of knowledge. We went roughly from the mid-1980s, where this idea had been floated, and painfully, Gusella was able to find markers linked to Huntington's disease on chromosome 4, the tip of chromosome 4. And it took 10 years to get that genome.

True, it's a very intricate genome. I won't tell you about it.

But everybody knew we had to have a Human Genome Project. And we labored for a decade to get a Human Genome Project. But once we had one reference sequence, we could build on that

reference sequence as many we wanted. And then the technology came along, and we went from radioactive sequencing to fluorescent sequencing to now this massively parallel sequencing on physical slides like that, by optical methods. It isn't going to stop. That is what makes biology so cool.

So that's it for today. [APPLAUSE]

The improvements in DNA sequencing technology over the last decade are simply mind blowing. "

These are some of my classmates in MITx: 7.00x Introduction to Biology, along with many others in the virtual world. I think we are all part of two revoutions: understanding biology and opening up learning to the world - transcending space and time.

I am in MITx: 7.00x Introduction to Biology - The Secret of Life, taught by Professor Eric Lander of MIT. It has been a remarkable class, and a great supplement to the on-campus cell biology class I have been taking concurrently. This class is one of many offered through edX

Finally a Machine I'm proud of! A mITX i5, 8GB, 1TB, HD3000, powerful enough PC with Mac OS X Lion running smoothly.

Like a strong Mac Mini.

Here is a brief transcript from Week 11 of MITx: 7.00x Introduction to Biology , where Professor Eric Lander talks about current DNA sequencing technology - amazing. This is from an Illumina Genome Analyzer

In fact, on the current machine we have here, the number of spots we can do and read--

three billion spots simultaneously.

STUDENT: How many base pairs can you get?

PROFESSOR: You can only get about 100 base pairs. It doesn't get you 700 right now.

It gets you about 100 base pairs. But 100 base pairs times three billion spots, is, you know, 300 billion

letters of DNA. Which is more than we collected in the entire Human Genome Project.

It's collected on a glass slide. I brought one for you. This is how you read 300 billion bases of DNA.

Welcome back to 7.00x, Introduction to Biology-The Secret of Life. This week is very special. We're going to talk about genomics, which I do and I love.

This is a really sweet motherboard from Intel. It comes pre-installed with an ATOM processor running at 1.6ghz. The MITX board is small form factor measuring roughly 6" inches by 6 inches. Really great board for project PCs as it costs about $65 and all you need to do is slap on some memory.

So, at the MITX awards, every chair had a big foam finger. This woman apparently sat on hers. Then when the audience was told to stand up for a cheer (it was a sports theme), the finger came with her. The rest (as they say) was history.
