LARGER

New Year's Day in Bilbao.

Trying to do something interesting on a rainy evening next to the Guggenheim Museum, with the Xiaomi Mi Sphere 360 camera, just before I started my 'serious' take on this location during blue hour. :) See below, and further down my photostream.

This is Maman [1999], an awe inspiring piece of artwork of Louise Bourgeois, almost 9 meters tall. Actually, I'm afraid of spiders... :D

Maman is one of the most ambitious of a series of sculptures by Bourgeois that represents the spider, which became a central subject in her work during the 1990s.

Intended as a tribute to her mother, who was a weaver, Bourgeois's spiders are highly contradictory as emblems of maternity: they suggest both protector and predator—the silk of a spider is used both to construct cocoons and to bind prey—and embody both strength and fragility.

Such ambiguities are powerfully figured in the mammoth Maman, which hovers ominously on legs like Gothic arches that act at once as a cage and as a protective lair to a sac full of eggs perilously attached to her undercarriage. The spider provokes awe and fear, yet her massive height, improbably balanced on slender legs, conveys an almost poignant vulnerability.

Just a little edit for this little planet

This is from our trip across America when we moved out to California in 2017. It's about 11 miles off of I-70 but that is about 40 minutes each way. Smaller and less popular than Monument Rocks (though probably remnants of the same geologic formation) it was still pretty cool to visit.

A couple of things to note. You will be on private property but I have been told they are okay with it (did see any no trespassing signs). The rocks are deep into the property and the road is no great. Our car is not four wheel drive but did have higher than average clearance. Still there was a point where I really thought we were going to get stuck just on the way out. I would say don't do the loop like us. Stick to going to the main rocks and going back the way you came in if you car doesn't have a high clearance and 4 wheel drive.
