Again, I normally don't post our technical assignments, but this was hands down the hardest, most time consuming assignment I have ever been asked to complete. This assignment is called Black Glass Two (Mirror Cube). This series of shots are all taken on a piece of black glass, while photographing a cube with mirrored sides. The tonal values on the background black glass are with-in 5 points of each other from side to side. The mirrors on the sides of the cube are also with-in 5 points of each other corner to corner (as well as the middle). We also had to correct for the convergence of the vertical sides of the box. Working with a Valeo Digital back 4x5 made this easier. That only took our group 8 1/2 hours to focus and correct! This assignment completed, took my group and myself a mere 35 hours to complete. The headaches, problem solving and patience that this assignment took to complete can not be explained. Learning how to photograph a specular object on top of another specular object without a specular highlight leaves me to believe that we can light just about anything correctly after this.

WIT: A few months ago I found a version of Rubik's cube, mirror cube, that has pieces with different volume. Mixed-up looks really strange. The surface is reflective-silver and I had a lot of problems with lightening (also, I have only built-in flash). I used two table lamps and white paper to get white reflections and took two photos. The first one was with paper all around (and below) to get uniform reflection on the surface of the cube, while the other one was without paper to get reflection on the table. In post-processing I merged and cropped the photos.

The room is surprisingly big inside....the ceiling very high, and it has a roof terrace.

I never thought the Gorillapod would be stable enough for these shots. Now I just regret not using it from the beginning, it handles 30 second shots just perfectly!
