.......The White Elephant in the room looked on patiently at the 800 pound gorilla laying on the creaking couch, encouraging her to continue with his kind silence….. She resumed speaking in confessional tones: …..don’t you sometimes marvel at how perversely bizarre the simple” truth” can sometimes sound? ……So strange we go around denying what’s happening rather than run the risk of sounding crazy.
The unconditional positive regard emanating from the elephant across the room was having an effect …..
......As an example, even as a senior Congresswoman, when bringing up the topic of the "silent government coup" amongst colleages, I feel like I’m walking on eggshells . You know; it’s something that usually happens in a third world country….but never us….. To even speculate on this possibility feels too frighteningly unthinkable….except in the realm of literary fantasies.

The gorilla exhaled and continued….You see, ....even now, just talking about it, I find myself struggling to avoid words of off-the-wall sounding conspiracy theorists. ….let’s face it, .....we have enough problems without sounding like paranoid loonies….and become the butt of ridicule on Fox TV.....even though some privately admit to being plagued by the very same unspeakable thoughts...
The gently nodding head and swaying trunk were strangely relaxing…..

She preened herself nervously while sinking still deeper into the straining couch. She stared impassively into the darkness and in a far off, hesitating voice volunteered…....I don’t know that this is related…..but, of all things, I just remembered a dream I had……of a baby dolphin who spoke to me of a life altering experience she'd once gone through.
.....She talked about a defining moment that came to pass in the midst of Hurricane Katrina. . During the storm surge and flooding that followed, she came to realize that the water filled spaces where she’d always experienced her being were in fact unnatural.
As the storm swept her further away from home, she took note that her childhood sanctuary had actually been cleverly compartmentalized, heated, cooled and articulated.....it had controlled and colored every facet of her existence.
With this knowledge, she would never see the world in the same way. She spoke of experiencing an exhilarating sense of freedom that was, at first, quite disorienting…..
As we swam and frolicked in the warm Gulf and Caribbean Sea waters, she marveled at the blinding array of choices and possible futures before her….. We drifted in the midst of a calm sun dappled ocean that went on forever…..
We floated lazily on our backs facing a brilliant sky and talked about everything under the sun. I remember dozing off during a long pause…..then awakening to the sound of her child-like whisperings as she confided thoughts and longings intruding on her new life of freedom….. They seemed to flood her with nostalgic memories of a simpler time in a place called Lake Pontchartrain..…on a US naval base she’d called home…..
After a waiting for her next words for some time, Ganesha, the towering white elephant cleared it's throat and, said the expected thing in moments like this... Now what do you suppose that’s all about Madam Speaker?….
