First flight of the Airbus plane from Beijing to Nice on the Côte d'Azur in France.

The plane of Air China landed this Friday, August 2 on the tarmac of Nice airport. Nice is now connected to China three times a week. This new intercontinental line is the 1st in France for a regional airport.

This new link will enable a potential clientele of 1.4 billion inhabitants, including 3.5 million millionaires, to enjoy the Côte d'Azur.

When visiting the French Riviera, Chinese tourists are mainly interested in Nice, Antibes and Cannes. Claire Behar, director of the Regional Committee of Tourism of the Côte d'Azur, hopes that future arrivals will discover "our beautiful landscapes of the High and Middle-Country, and why not the ski resorts of Mercantour, because the Chinese love the culture but also nature ".

In 2018, Nice Airport consolidates its position as the second airport platform in France. Last year was another record year: 13.85 million passengers. An increase of 4.1%, or 560,000 more passengers.

I thought it was worth posting another of the beach huts as I was scampering up and down the beach in front of some bemused surfers trying to vary the composition.

The spectacular Boldt Castel is a testament to the tragic love story that began in the late 19th century between the millionaire George C. Boldt, a prominent hotelier and proprietor of the famous Waldorf Asteria Hotel in New York, and Louise Augusta Kehrer known for her grace and beauty. She was the light of George’s life, and he credited her for much of his success. The dream and grander of the Rhineland-style of Boldt Castle began in 1900 in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island, nestled in the calm waters of the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands area of New York State.

It was to be a gift to Louise, a symbol of his undying love and devotion. George spared no expenses with the finest architectural details of the six story, 120 luxurious room castle, complete with tunnels, Italian gardens, playhouse and dove-cote. However, the love story took a sorrowful turn in 1904 when Louise tragically died due to heart failure at age 42. Her sudden death left George devastated and he immediately stopped the project; he never returned to the island. The fairytale castle was abandoned for 73 years. In 1977, the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property and started important restoration efforts. Today, it is a major tourist attraction for visitors from around the world. Their love, though marked by sadness, continues to resonate through the halls and towers of Boldt Castle, capturing the hearts of all who visit.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

History of the Thousand Islands. At the start of the previous century, George C. Boldt, a millionaire owner of a world-renowned hotel in New York, undertook the construction of a castle at Alexandria Bay, inspired by the style of German castles. The grand structure was to be a testament to his love for his wife Louise. For more than 4 years, 300 workers (stone masons, carpenters and artists) have therefore built a six-storey, 120-room chateau with its underground passages, its power plant, its Italian gardens, its drawbridge and its loft. No expense or detail has been spared. But in 1904 Boldt sent a telegram in which he ordered the workers to "stop all construction" immediately. Louise had just died suddenly. Boldt, who was heartbroken, could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved. Boldt never returned to the island, leaving the site behind him, as a token of his love.

An empty (people-less) pool is the best kind of pool. I like to pretend I'm a millionnaire with my own pool when it's empty (which is quite often, hooray!)

Well this morning was the most spectacular high tide I've seen. The sun came out at the right time and the huge flocks of waders got about as close as they can reasonably be expected to get! Loads of pics and I'll probably bore folk by putting some up but I really needed video to get over the sound and sight of the vast flocks of Knott, Dunlin, Grey Plover and a few Bar-tailed Gs and Oystercatchers. I was quite envious of all the super cream coloured telephoto lenses that can only mean one thing -Canon millionnaires!

RMS Caronia was a 34,183 gross register tons (GRT) passenger ship of the Cunard Line (then Cunard White Star Line). Launched on 30 October 1947, she served with Cunard until 1967. She was initially nicknamed the "Green Goddess" [1] after Liverpool's green and white "Green Goddess" trams, and the nickname stuck. She was one of the first "dual-purpose" ships, built both for 2-class transatlantic crossings and all 1st-class cruising. After leaving Cunard she briefly served as SS Caribia in 1969, after which she was laid up in New York until 1974 when she was sold for scrap. While being towed to Taiwan for scrapping, she was caught in a storm on 12 August. After her tow lines were cut, she repeatedly crashed on the rocky breakwater outside Apra Harbor, Guam and broke into three sections.

History

After World War II, the Cunard White Star Line operated three ships on the Southampton—New York run. The famous RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth operated a weekly express service, with the smaller and slower RMS Mauretania sailing as the third ship on the route. The company placed an order for a running mate to the Mauretania, a ship of similar speed and proportions for the transatlantic run. Ultimately this was not to be the role of the new ship, as Cunard White Star's executives decided that the new ship would be built primarily for cruising.

With that in mind, the new ship — soon to be named Caronia by Princess Elizabeth — received many different features from her Cunard White Star fleetmates. An outdoor swimming pool was a new thing, as was having bathroom / shower facilities in every cabin. However, unlike modern cruise ships her accommodation was divided into two classes on transatlantic voyages; First and Cabin.

On cruises all accommodation was sold as one class although many staterooms, both on A deck and R deck were usually allocated to Cabin Class. Even some cabins on B deck were sold on cruises. Both restaurants served the same menu in just one sitting and passengers were allocated to a restaurant dependent upon the locations of their staterooms. On short cruises to the Caribbean and South America, every cabin was offered for occupation and often, as on transatlantic crossings, there would be two sittings for luncheon and dinner.

To distinguish her from Cunard White Star's liners, the company decided to give her a different colour scheme. Instead of going for the then typical black hull with a white superstructure, Caronia received a unique livery of four different shades of "Cruising Green", making her a highly attractive and instantly recognizable vessel.

Another striking feature of the ship was her large single funnel, one of the largest ever installed aboard a ship. Like those of the later SS United States, this funnel easily caught the wind, making the ship somewhat difficult to handle.[2] Caronia was the largest passenger ship to be built in Scotland after World War 2 until Queen Elizabeth 2 twenty years later.

1949-1959: A ship ahead of her time

The brand new RMS Caronia made her maiden voyage on 4 January 1949 between Southampton and New York.[3] Two more transatlantic crossings followed before the ship embarked on her first cruises from New York to the Caribbean. During her first years she spent most of the year on transatlantic crossings; only during the winter was she engaged in cruising. In 1951 she made her first world cruise. From 1952 onwards she made transatlantic crossings only in August and September, with the rest of the year dedicated to cruising; during one such cruise, she ran aground in Egypt on 12 March 1952 while transiting the Suez Canal.[4] In May 1953 the Caronia made what was perhaps her most famous cruise, associated with the coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II (who had christened the Caronia six years earlier). The ship was used as a hotel, as most of the accommodation in the United Kingdom was fully booked.

Caronia ran aground at Messina, Sicily, Italy, on 31 May 1956,[5] but was refloated the next day.[6] Her annual refit in November 1956 saw Caronia modernised for southern cruising with air-conditioning outfitted through the entire ship.[7] Her world cruise of 1958 saw her suffer the most serious accident of her career. Sailing slowly out of Yokohama harbour to avoid collision with a United States Navy vessel, she was driven by high winds against the harbor′s breakwater, causing serious damage to her bow and demolishing a harbor lighthouse in the process. Fortunately the United States Navy allowed Cunard to use their drydock at the Yokosuka yard for repairs to the Caronia. That same year Caronia's autumn cruise in the Mediterranean had to be cancelled due to political tensions in the Middle East.

1959-1967: Competition catches up

1959 saw Caronia making regular transatlantic crossings for the last time. Competition from the jet airliner meant there weren't enough passengers for her in the North Atlantic trade. From here her transatlantic crossings were repositioning voyages. The first each year being a Sterling Cruise,[8] so called because all other Caronia cruises were paid for only in US Dollars, and taking a southerly route via the Bahamas instead of the usual direct route. Decreased passenger numbers in the North Atlantic also meant that more of Cunard's liners were rebuilt into cruise use and received a similar green colour scheme to that of the Caronia, which in 1962 were established as the line's official cruise colours when RMS Mauretania was repainted for cruising (though not otherwise significantly adapted for the role). In 1963 the heavily rebuilt and renamed RMS Franconia and RMS Carmania followed suit. By this time the Caronia's itineraries had settled into a yearly pattern, each cruise having found its ideal individual place in the calendar.

By the early 1960s other shipping companies were catching up with Cunard and building their own purpose-built cruiseships, which in addition to being better equipped than the Caronia were better suited for cruising than she had ever been. To keep up with her newer competitors, Cunard decided that in November 1965 Caronia would be drydocked for ten weeks,[7] new suites and a lido deck built, and her interior brought up to date. 1966 brought with it a seamen's strike in Britain, which upset the Caronia's itineraries badly. As a result of climbing operating costs, 1967 was the first year when the Caronia didn't profit her owners. Due to increased competition, Cunard decided to withdraw her from service at the end of the year. Fittingly, Caronia's last voyage for Cunard was a transatlantic crossing from New York to Southampton.

1968-1974: Final Years

SS Caribia breaks up in Apra Harbor, Guam, 1974

In early 1968 the Caronia was sold to Star Shipping,[9][10] a company owned by US and Panamian interests. Renamed SS Columbia, she sailed to Greece for refitting. Cunard had allowed Caronia to fall behind her maintenance schedule, and her engines needed a major overhaul. Replacement parts were ordered from a Greek company rather than from the original manufacturer. Whilst she was being rebuilt Andrew Konstaninidis took control of Columbia, buying out the other owners of Star Line and renaming her the SS Caribia. Her refitting was completed and she was given a new all-white colour scheme. She was registered in Panama, with her tonnage reduced to 25,794 GRT under Panamanian rules (which saved dock dues). February 1969 saw the Caribia embark on her first cruise from New York to the Caribbean. The voyage was hindered by a malfunction in her waste system. Things turned for the worse on her second cruise, when an explosion in the engine room resulted in the death of one crew member and the severe scalding of another. In addition the ship lost all electrical power for twenty hours before repairs allowed her to return to port. The incident undermined public confidence in the vessel. The Caribia limped back to New York, never to make a commercial voyage again.[10]

Plans to revive the Caribia were considered for the next five years,[11] but she remained docked in New York and her berthing debts continued to accumulate. Finally in 1974 her owners gave in and sold the once great ship for scrap. German ocean tug Hamburg was entrusted with the task of towing the Caribia to a breaker's yard in Taiwan. Whilst near Honolulu the ship was in danger of capsizing; but repairs were made and they continued on. The two ships sailed into a bad storm near Guam. The Hamburg's generators failed and her crew were forced to cut the Caribia loose to save their own vessel. The storm's winds drove the lifeless ship against Apra Harbour's breakwater, where she was wrecked.[12]

Being a danger to local shipping, the wrecked Caribia was swiftly cut up. Before that took place, it was discovered that she had come to rest beside a Korean War era landing craft sunk in that same location. The landing craft was loaded with tons of munitions including 22mm, 40mm, 5", and 8" shells. This required the careful removal of all of these materials before removal of the Caribia could continue. Her removal was all the more urgent because the Caribia's hulk blocked Apra harbor's entrance. No commercial or military vessels could leave or enter the harbor until significant portions of her stern had first been removed. As Apra is the only deep water harbor on Guam, this made resupply of many vital commodities (e.g., petroleum products) impossible or difficult. Her life ended just 25 years after she was commissioned. Despite being probably the most forward-looking ship of her time, she was in active service for only 19 years.

Listening to Eartha Kitt all morning inspired a look.

Spanish collector's card. Chocolate Salas-Sabadell, No. 6. French actress Fabienne Fabrèges and Didaco Chellini in the Italian silent film Spasimi (Giuseppe Giusti, Corona Films 1916). The Spanish release title of the film was Espasmos. The cards series consisted of six cards, all of which have been found and uploaded here. As far as known, no copy of the film exists.

Plot: Fabienne is orphan, alone and ruined. At the auction of her palace, Marquis Chabrol asks Fabienne to become the piano teacher of his daughter Renée. She is overcome by the wealth of the marquis's mansion, while Henri, the son of the marquis, falls in love with her. His father chases him and he goes for easy pleasures. Fabienne takes care of the ill marquis, which is rewarded by the marquis' gratitude but also the envy of his daughter. During a nightly garden party by the Count of St. Privat, Fabienne is the toast of the evening. The count whispers sweet words to her. She confesses him her only mistake in life but he forgives her and asks her in marriage. Jealous Renée plots to ruin Fabienne's happiness by telling her brother Henri how fond their father is of Fabienne and asking him to return immediately. Henri returns after the wedding and is vexed Fabienne didn't choose him. The count, remembering Fabienne's confusion she once had another man, takes her on a honeymoon to far away places. Henri pursues them, though. he confronts Fabienne, who declares she despises him and loves her husband, but she thinks he will kill her husband, so she agrees to a secret rendezvous. The count finds the letter and suspects his wife of adultery. Armed with a revolver, Fabienne goes to Henri's house to defend her husband, followed by the Count. But entering the house, she finds the corpse of Henri, who has killed himself and holds in his hands a letter exonerating Fabienne. From that day, the happiness for the couple returns. (plot taken from the backside of the cards)

Just like in Signori giurati, one of the few remaining Italian films with Fabrèges, and produced almost at the same time, we can conclude that Didaco Chellini plays the male lead of the film, the Count. If the same cast of Signori giurati collaborated, then Bonaventura Ibanez may have played the old Marquis, Attilio de Virgiliis young Henri, and Valeria Creti Renée. NB Vittorio Martinelli, in his reference work Il cinema muto italiano (1916, part II), doesn't list any of the other actors, and only gives a vague plot. The film premiered in Rome on 12 June 1917. While the Italian press thought the plot unimpressive, it praised Fabrèges' performance as "gracious, without the grand gestures and poses of the worst style", probably referring to the Italian divas or rather their epigones (Giuseppe Lega in Cine-Gazzetto, Rome, 9-6-2017). The film apparently was a public success.

Fabienne Fabrèges (1889-?) was a French actress, but also scriptwriter and director of the silent film. She had a rich career at Gaumont, and afterward in Italian silent film.

Fabienne Fabrèges is part of a generation of "modern" young women who, at the beginning of the twentieth century, were able to overcome the roles of women who were forced upon them in Western society when pursuing their careers. Fabienne Fabrèges began as a young actress at the age of 15 in "Cousin Bette" by Honoré de Balzac. In 1911, her talent as a performer was already receiving favorable reviews. Then she was part of the troupe of the company of Charles Baret, performing in Strasbourg and various French cities. Fabrèges also played in theatrical performances abroad, notably on the stages of Saint-Petersburg, Berlin, London, and Madrid.

Fabrèges's film career (1910-1923) can be divided into three phases. Between 1910 and 1916, she worked in France for the Société des Établissements Gaumont where she joined Léonce Perret's troupe, director of the company with Louis Feuillade. At Gaumont she acted in some forty films, mostly directed by Perret, and from 1913 also by Feuillade, including the third episode of Fantomas (1913). During the First World War, in 1916, she moved to Italy, where she was immediately recognized as a leading actress by the Italian film industry, and, between 1916 and 1923, played in over twenty films. Fabrèges first acted at the Turin based company Corona Films, e.g. in Signora giurati (Giuseppe Giusti, 1916), of which a tinted print was found at the Dutch EYE Filmmuseum. Fabrèges here plays the owner of an opium den, who falls in love with one of her victims (Bonaventura Ibáñez). Fabrèges also scripted the film. Indeed, for several of these Italian films, Fabrèges is also credited as screenwriter. In 1917 she also acted at other companies, such as Gladiator Film and Latino Ars. In 1918 she reached the apex of her career, when moving to De Giglio films. Producer Alfonso De Giglio was so impressed by her that he not only gave her several leads, but also let her found her own company, the Fabrèges Film Company. It operated under the aegis of De Giglio and produced four films in 1919: Il cuore di Musette, L’altalena della vita, Sua Maestà il Denaro, and Sua Maestà l’Amore. Fabrèges scripted all four and played the lead, while for L'altalena della vita she also functioned as director. Yet, despite praise for her direction and performance, critics condemned her script of the latter film. This may have meant the end of her own company (of which very few details are known), though Fabrèges still acted in two films by De Giglio in 1920, while a third had a late release in 1923. Finally, somewhere in 1920-1921, she left the stage and the screen in Italy and moved to Britain, where she continued to perform on stage in theaters, and starred in one film, The Pennyless Millionnaire (Einar Bruun 1921), with Stewart Rome in the lead, and Gregory Scott and Cameron Carr as co-stars. There, her career seems to have ended after 1923, following a breakup in love. She retired to Scotland and no longer showed herself in public.

It is unknown when and where Fabienne Fabrèges died. She is sometimes mentioned as Fabrège or Fabrege.

A white Rolls Royce "Bel Air" by Mansory, based on the Rolls Royce Drophead. It has great english plates, and was always accompanied by a G55 K8 by Brabus and a red Ferrari California (both with great plates). It doesn't have the Mansory wheels though, but some custom-made Lexani. This car is so massive, you might not realize it, but it's really really huge! I seriously wonder how the hell do they drive these things in the narrow Monaco streets!

Helen(e) Gammeltoft (1895-?) was an Danish-American actress and scriptwriter.

Born 26/3 1895 in Syracuse, America, as Inger Madden or Madsen, she made her debut in film in Britain according to IDMB, in the 1913 film The Eleventh Commandment, and under the name of Helena Callen. The film was also the debut of the popular British stage star Gladys Cooper. The next year, she moved to Denmark, where she debuted at Nordisk Film in August Blom's comedy Bytte Roller/ The Girl of his Heart (1914), starring opposite Nicolai Johannsen as millionnaire Thomas Grey and Frederik Buch as his cook.

In 1915, Gammeltoft had leads or important supporting parts in five films at Nordisk: Hans Kusine/ His Cousin (Lau Lauritzen sr.) with Peter Jørgensen, En Død i Skønhed/ Beatrix (Robert Dinesen) with Rita Sacchetto, Olaf Fönss and Nicolai Johannsen, Susanne i Badet (Lau Lauritzen) with Oscar Stribolt, Kærlighed og Mobilisering/ Put me amongst the Girls (Lauritzen) with Frederik Buch, and Den lille Chauffør (August Blom) with Nicolai Johannsen. In 1916 Gammeltoft acted in four films at Nordisk, while in 1917 she acted in six and in 1918 in five films - mostly in the role of 'the pretty girl'. Yet, from 1916 Gammeltoft developed as screenwriter too, writing comedies for Buch, Stribolt, Rasmus Christiansen and others, starting with Den ædle Skrædder (Lauritzen, 1916) and En landlig Uskyldighed (Lauritzen, 1916) - she had the lead in the latter comedy.

In 1917-1918 Gammeltoft was most prolific as both actress and screenwriter, mostly in short comedies. She appeared in a small number of 'serious' feature films (e.g. En Lykkeper, Gunnar Sommerfeldt 1918, starring Carlo Wieth) and made just a few films outside Nordisk's direction, Hjerteknuseren (Carl Barcklind, 1919) for Skandinavisk Filmcentral, and Dommens Dag (Fritz Magnussen, 1918) for Olaf Fønss' company Dansk Film Co. After 1918, Gammeltoft's peak as actress and scriptwriter was over, while she did two films in 1919, and the three last films in 1920. In 1920 Lauritzen, who had worked at Nordisk for years, started his own firm Palladium, with which he launched in 1921 the popular comic duo of Long and Short/ Pat & Patachon/ Fy och By, with tall Carl Schenström and short Harald Madsen. Incidentally, Schenström had already played in the comedies by Lauritzen and Gammeltoft at Nordisk.

French postcard by EC, no. 90. Photo: Teddy Piaz, Paris.

Bach (1882-1953) was a popular French actor, singer and music hall performer. During the 1930s, he was the king of the Comique Troupier (coarse comedy).

Bach was born in 1882 in Fontanil-Cornillon, Isère, France as Charles-Joseph Pasquier. He made his stage debut in 1899. In 1911, he made his film debut at Pathé Frères in the short silent comedy Le pot de confitures (Georges Denola, 1911). In 1914, at the start of the Great War, he became a famous Music-hall performer with some great 'Comique Troupier classics: Quand Madelon (1914), Avec Bidasse (1914), and La Caissière du Grand Café (1914), songs which were later repeated by Fernandel. Among Bach's later popular songs were La rue de la Manutention (1919) and Les pompiers de Nanterre (1933). He then formed the duo, Bach and Laverne, with Henry-Laverne. With Laverne, he wrote more than 200 sketches between 1928 en 1938. At the same time, he performed in music hall revues, alongside Marie Dubas or Harry Pilcer. After a long interval, he returned to the screen in early sound comedies like Une grave erreur/A serious mistake (Joe Francis, 1930) and Le tampon du capiston/The capiston tampon (Joe Francis, Jean Toulout, 1930). In the following years, he appeared in such Comique Troupiers (coarse comedies) as En bordée/Bordered (Joe Francis, Henry Wulschleger, 1931), L'affaire Blaireau/The Blaireau Case (Henry Wulschleger, 1932) with Alice Tissot, and Le champion du régiment/The Regiment's Champion (Henry Wulschleger, 1932) with Josette Day. He co-starred with Georges Tréville and Charles Montel in L'enfant de ma soeur/My sister's child (Henry Wulschleger, 1933) and Bach millionnaire/Bach the Millionaire (Henry Wulschleger, 1933). Fernandel was his co-star in Le train de huit heures quarante-sept/The eight forty seven train (Henry Wulschleger, 1934) and Florelle in Sidonie Panache (Henry Wulschleger, 1934). In the latter Bach reprised the role of Chabichou, which he created at the Châtelet in 1930-1931. In Bout de chou (Henry Wulschleger, 1935), Bach co-starred with Pierre Brasseur. D.B. DuMonteil at IMDb: "Henry Wulschleger was a coarse comedy past master: "Le train De 8H47", "Le Champion Du Régiment", "Tire Au Flanc" ..... Although one of his stars is Charles-Joseph Pasquier aka Bach, the king of the genre, this story does not deal with grunts and does not take place in barracks. Based on a play by Yves Mirande and Julien Duvivier - both of whom were also directors, the latter being my French all-time favourite -, it is actually a melodrama, or rather a spoof on melodramas."

In the second half of the 1930s, Bach continued to star in such farces as Debout là-dedans! (Henry Wulschleger, 1935) with Germaine Roger, Bach détective/Bach the Detective (René Pujol, 1936) with Ginette Leclerc, and Le cantinier de la coloniale (Henry Wulschleger, 1937) with Saturnin Fabre. About the latter, D.B. DuMonteil notes: "A pleasant little comedy which blends Comique Troupier (coarse comedy) with the French myth of the "Oncle D'Amérique", this imaginary character who epitomizes the French dream: to become a millionaire, thanks to the death of this wealthy "Scrooge MacDuck" from the New World." Director Henry Wulschleger had his own theatre company, in which Bach and Fabre were two of the stars. Wulschleger also directed them in Gargousse (Henry Wulschleger, 1938). Jean Boyer was the director of Mon curé chez les riches/My priest among the rich (Jean Boyer, 1938) in which Bach co-starred with Elvire Popesco. Bach's later comedies were Le chasseur de chez Maxim's/The Porter from Maxim's (Maurice Cammage, 1939) with Roger Tréville, and Bach en correctionnelle (Henry Wulschleger, 1940). His career declined after the Second World War. After the war, he appeared in two more films, Le charcutier de Machonville/The butcher of Machonville (Vicky Ivernel, 1947) and Le martyr de Bougival/The martyr of Bougival (Jean Loubignac, 1949). He reappeared on stage in the late 1940s. At the age of 71, Bach died in 1953 in Nogent-le-Rotrou, Eure-et-Loir, France. He was buried in his native village of Fontanil-Cornillon, where a street was named after him. Bach was married to Pauline Doussat from 1929 till his death.
