This was taken at Miidera, a large Tendai sect Buddhist temple at the base of Mount Hiei in Ōtsu, Shiga Prefecture. The temple was originally founded in 672 AD but was burnt to the ground numerous times thanks to its monks' former penchant for sectarian strife and playing politics backed by military force. The age of the temple's warrior monks came to a close when Oda Nobunaga, the first of Japan's three unifiers, put the area to the torch in 1571 in a campaign to bring Mt Hiei's pesky monks to heel. Once it was certain that the monks would not make any further political and military mischief, they were allowed to rebuild the temple.

Enchin est un moine tendaï du début de l'époque de Heian, à l’origine de la branche ésotérique Jimon (寺門) de la secte. Il étudia en Chine et fut abbé des monastères de Mii-dera et Enryaku-ji, et le 5e patriarche de Tendaï. Sa position ne fut pas acceptée par les disciples du 3e patriarche Ennin. La dispute aboutit en 993 à une scission définitive entre Sanmon (山門), parti d’Ennin, et Jimon.
