We had a few glorious sunrises and sunsets during the second week I was in Norfolk. This wee barn, amongst the stubble, was on my doorstep so it was rude not to revisit a few times. The stormy skies rolled in in the evening just as the sun was setting. It was like a scene from the US when I went storm chasing a few years ago.

It's that time of the year here in Central Illinois, a time where there is an abundance of grain trains. This one in particular is a 90 car unit train, coming from ADM in Tuscola and is bound for a customer in North Carolina. The Charleston-based crew was called for 4:00 PM and was on the train and departing Tuscola by 5:30. After a little catch-up, I was able to come across them just on the other side of Murdock, as slow orders held them up. This shot was taken a mile east of Newman, where the engineer has the two YN2-painted AC4400CW locomotives notched up out of town.

The visual impression of Illinois’ agricultural landscapes is one of expansive openness, where the sky meets the earth in an unbroken line, punctuated only by the occasional farmhouse, silo, or grove of trees along waterways.
It is a landscape dominated by monoculture crops, primarily corn and soybeans, which stretch across the horizon in neat, orderly rows. The area is predominantly flat with gently rolling hills, and the soil is exceptionally rich, thanks to thousands of years of organic matter accumulation from deep-rooted prairie plants. This has made Illinois one of the most productive agricultural states in the United States.
Seen on a recent trip to South Dakota and Minnesota.

We met the landowner while taking photos and he gave us some great stories. The last occupant was his sister about 40 years ago.
As the sun pokes over the horizon the tractor trails in a browning wheat-field become very noticeable. The low sunlight creates shadows in the depressions giving this image a great depth of field.

An older photo I just randomly came across and felt like uploading. Stacked image of the Milky Way behind an old windmill somewhere outside Pipestone, MN.
This mural is a collaboration of 1500 participants from the Midwestern states and throughout North America. The tiles they painted represent their connection, affect, and experiences for the Midwest.
Each region of the country has one in a city and we were lucky enough to stumble upon this one!
this one wasn't too bad - just the two vehicles you see, myself and one car behind me . . . . sometimes they can be six or eight cars deep! ;~)

just popping in to say "hello" on this last day of April. I'll be back later this weekend to visit everyone. Hope you all are having a great Spring . . . or Fall, if you live down-under!
Union Pacific power on the front of CSX train Q016 helps the Pennsylvania/Maryland border look like somewhere in Nebraska. Long summer days make it possible to catch the intermodal leaving Chambersburg and working its way down the Lurgan Subdivision.
