This once proud fortress, was in its heyday the largest castle in all of Eastern Bavaria. Through mismanagement it is now only a shadow of itself.
However, now the help of archaeologists and a non-profit association will not only get the castle, but partially rebuilt.

In the Abbaye Saint-Léger in Soissons. The crypt was made in two phases, first a Romanesque crypt in the late 11th century, and then a choir added around 1200.
The monastery of San Juan de la Peña is a religious complex in the town of Santa Cruz de la Serós, at the south-west of Jaca, in the province of Huesca, Spain. It was one of the most important monasteries in Aragon in the Middle Ages. Its two-level church is partially carved in the stone of the great cliff that overhangs the foundation. San Juan de la Peña means "Saint John of the Cliff".

In the Gothic cathedral in Soissons, dedicated to Saint Gervais and Saint Protais. The building-work was started in 1177 and finished in 1479. It was severely damaged in the first world war, but later restored - a task that was completed in 1937.

The difference between a "Burg" and a "Schloss" (castle) is that a Burg is more like a fortress, built for protection from the enemies, and a Schloss was for the nobility to reside in, and very lavishly decorated.
Over time, some of the Burgs were also turned into castles.
Burg Eltz is somewhat unusual, in that it's been in the same family that had it built over 850 years ago, and Count and Countess Eltz still live there today.

In the cathedral Notre Dame in Bayeux. It was originally in Romanesque style but later rebuilt in Gothic style (as evident here). The cathedral was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror (who was also the Duke of Normandy) - but the build had started already around 1040 and mostly finished in the 15th century.

The Gothic cathedral of Siena - Duomo di Siena (though the dome is a later addition, designed by Baroque architect Bernini). It was began in 1196 - replacing an older church, consecrated sometime before or in 1215 (when daily mass was being held at the church), and finished in 1348.
Unfortunately, I didn't have time to actually go in - we still had a long way to go that day, and Siena was just a pit stop...
The pride not only of Šariš, but also of the whole of Slovakia is the ancient town of BARDEJOV, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Slovak towns. It was included in the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List in 2000. Bardejov has also a fitting nickname – “the most gothic town in Slovakia”.
The picturesque square with colorful burgher houses, the majestic Basilica Minor of St. Egidius, the Jewish suburb, the historic town hall, the Executioner's House, well-preserved city walls with bastions ... A huge number of valuable and remarkable monuments in a relatively small area. The city center is formed by the Town Hall Square surrounded on three sides by 46 burgher houses on narrow medieval plots. In the middle stands the Basilica Minor of St. Egidius, in front of which is located the original pair of bells Ján and Urban. The bells were originally placed in the bell tower of the Basilica’s tower. The old bells got damaged over time, so they were replaced by new castings. The Basilica of St. Egidius was built in the middle of the 14th century and contains a unique collection of 11 late Gothic winged altars. Feeling like climbing a flight of stairs? The tower of the basilica offers the most beautiful views of the city.

This Benedictine abbey, built in the Romanesque style, dates to the 11th and 12th centuries and was consecrated in 1156, though the building wasn't completed at the time - a quite common practice. The abbey was originally called just Laach Abbey (Abtei Laach), the Maria got added in 1862, during a period when Jesuits had the place (the Benedictine order had left in 1802 and were to return in 1892).
I chose this particular photo angle to 1) exclude a large group of tourists and 2) exclude the part of the entrance covered by white plastic sheets due to renovations at the time.

Inside the Romanesque church of San Sisto, built in to the medieval city wall of Viterbo - the apse actually sticks out of the wall! The church dates to the 11th century (and is first mentioned in 1068). It was a stop for pilgrims on the way to Rome, it is suitably placed right next to the city gate known as Porta Romana. The church was badly damaged during the Second World War, and when the church was rebuilt all post-medieval additions to the building was removed.
Established in 1195, as stated in the inscription located at the entrance, the church shows an incomplete façade.
The interior, simple and austere, yet monumental, has a central nave and side aisles separated by squat columns.
At the end of the nave, the presbytery is raised over the crypt, small and mystical, with a unique room with two columns supporting the groin vaults.

The church built in the Árpád era is one of the most beautiful and undamaged representative of Romanesque church architecture in Hungary.
No wonder that the church stands out from its environment because it used to be a part of a larger monastery complex as donation documents show from 1208 (by Andrew II). The earliest date that proves the existence of the church itself is 1206 carved on its wall outside.
In contrast with the facade expressing the simple strictness of Romanesque style is the gateway with its rich floral ornamentation. The mural of the archfield was created in the 19th cencury.
After an adventurous and rugged past the church today awaits visitors fully restored.

This is an old Romanesque stone church dating to around 1150, and it has been assumed to have been built by people who also worked on the cathedral in Lund (a church on quiet another scale - even though this one is surprisingly big inside).
The paintings in the apse are medieval originals, dating to the late 12th or very early 13th century, though partly damaged and the window is a medieval original (whereas the other windows in the church have been enlarged in later times).

This place is historically interesting for two very different reasons. This was the studio for one of the greatest Swedish artists: Anders Zorn (1860-1920) who had the this building as his workplace just by his home since 1898. But this is also an interesting house in its own right - it has been dated to 1292 (through dendrochronology). Back then this was a dwelling, of a type called eldhus (fire house) - but the name is a reference to this particular sort of house and does not denote any medieval wooden building where you could make a fire inside. It was moved to Zorn's home from Fåsås, some 16 kilometres away.
That the artist chose this as his studio is not really that strange. He and his wife had a keen interest in folk art and folk craft and they had a vast collection in and around their home (it is all now a museum - and it was intended to be that by the couple themselves). But to them it did not just mean preserving things but to use them too.
