No, no. Listen, listen. He said that if they dug his father's body up, it would be gone. They planted a seed over his grave. The seed became a tree. Moses said his father became a part of that tree. He grew into the wood, into the bloom. And when a sparrow ate the tree's fruit, his father flew with the birds. He said... death was his father's road to awe.

Museum Label: Mictlantecuhtli God of Death
"Ceramic sculpture representing Mictlantecuhtli, God of Death, conceived by the Aztecs as a half-gaunt being in a position of attack, with claws and curly hair, probably placed using the holes he has in his head. The liver hangs under his thorax, because according to Aztec beliefs, this internal organ was closely related with the Mictlan or the Underworld, place where this deity resided."
"It was found together with another one with the same characteristics, in the building known as the Casa day los Aguilas, towards the north side of the Templo Mayor, during the works of the fifth season in the Templo Mayor Project, between 1994 and 1997. Both effigies were placed during the period of Motecuhzoma I (1440-1469 A.D.) on sidewalks flanking the north access of the building; thanks to the research which took place, we know that the Aztecs used to offer blood to them."

"Among these temples there is one which far surpasses all the rest, whose grandeur of architectural details no human tongue is able to describe; for within its precincts, surrounded by a lofty wall, there is room enough for a town of five hundred families. Around the interior of the enclosure there are handsome edifices, containing large halls and corridors, in which the religious persons attached to the temple reside. There are fully forty towers, which are lofty and well built, the largest of which has fifty steps leading to its main body, and is higher than the tower of the principal tower of the church at Seville."
"Three halls are in this grand temple, which contain the principal idols... leading from the halls are chapels with very small doors, to which the light is not admitted, nor are any persons except the priests, and not all of them. In these chapels are the images of idols... The principal ones, in which the people have greatest faith and confidence, I precipitated from their pedestals, and cast them down the steps of the temple, purifying the chapels in which they had stood, as they were all polluted with human blood, shed ill the sacrifices. In the place of these I put images of Our Lady and the Saints, which excited not a little feeling in Moctezuma and the inhabitants, who at first remonstrated, declaring that if my proceedings were known throughout the country, the people would rise against me..."
"I answered, through the interpreters, that they were deceived in expecting any favors from idols, the work of their own hands, formed of unclean things; and that they must learn there was but one God, the universal Lord of all, who had created the heavens and earth, and all things else, and had made them and us; that He was without beginning and immortal, and they were bound to adore and believe Him, and no other creature or thing."

"Arranged in rows, two hundred forty stone skulls covered with several layers of stucco decorate the back and sides of the structure. The main façade has a stairway flanked by balustrades. Its interior contained a spectacular offering, including representations of musical instruments, along with puma and wolf skeletons and other elements."
"This building is located on the north side of the Great Temple, symbolically alluding to the region of the dead known as Mictlampa, according to Mexica cosmovision."

"Under the metal walkway, there runs an open duct lined with bricks. It is a water channel built around 1900, which crosses beneath the modern-day street of Guatemala. The construction of these public works cut right through the great temple, destroying all building phases in a path about two m (6 ft.) in width. At this time, it is believed that the great temple was completely buried beneath the Metropolitan Cathedral and nearby structures, because what is visible today was excavated after 1978."

"Coyolxauhqui [the Aztec Moon Goddess] was carved from a block of light pink volcanic rock, probably from the area of Cerro del Tenayo, in the basin of Mexico. Its circumference is irregular, with a maximum diameter of 3.25 meters (10'8") and a minimum of 3.04 (10'); its thickness is thirty centimeters (about 1') and it weighs about eight tons."
"It was placed in the Templo Mayor at the time of tlatoani Axayácatl, who governed Tenochtitlan between 1469 and 1481, and fortuitously discovered in its original location on February 21, 1978 by Power & Light Co. workers." -Eduardo Matos Moctezuma • discovery of the stone led to the excavation of the Templo Mayor site • The Coyolxauhqui Stone -Khan Academy

"In the offerings of the Templo Mayor the representations of brassieres such as these, made in stone or ceramic, were usually placed in the center of the deposit and associated with images of Xiuhtecuhtli, the god of fire. The Braziers fulfilled an essential function during rights and ceremonies as containers of fire, an element of great symbolic value that presided over such activities."

"Tláloc, the rain god, has been venerated by the Mexicas and by many other groups in Mesoamerica since remote times. This diety was responsible for bringing rain, which enabled crops to grow. However, he could also bring storms, easily destroying them."
"The image of the god probably once stood on the bench inside the shrine. In this part of the building, the best preserved mural painting can be found. It is reproduced in Gallery 5 of the museum."
"Outside the entrance, we can see the polychrome sculpture of a chac mool, bearing the attributes of Tlaloc and still retaining its original color. In 1989, a tunnel was excavated in the middle of the stairway leading to the shrine, where the head of another, earlier chac mool was found. This is the oldest Mexica piece found so far in the great temple. It dates to approximately A.D. 1350."

The Report to the King
"Around the interior of this enclosure there are handsome edifices, containing large halls and corridors, in which the religious persons attached to the temple reside. There are full forty towers, which are lofty and well built, the largest of which has fifty steps leading to its main body, and is higher than the tower of the principal church at Seville. The stone and wood of which they are constructed are so well wrought in every part, that nothing could be better done, for the interior of the chapels containing the idols consists of curious imagery, wrought in stone, with plaster ceilings, and wood-work carved in relief, and painted with figures of monsters and other objects. All these towers are the burial places of the nobles, and every chapel in them is dedicated to a particular idol, to which they pay their devotions." -Hernan Cortes, Segunda Carta de Relacion, 1522
The Astonishment of the Conqueror
"...saw the fresh water that comes from Chapultepec which supplies the city, and we saw the bridges on the three causeways which were built at certain distances apart through which the water of the lake flowed in and out from one side to the other... After having examined and considered all that we had seen we turned to look at the great marketplace and the crowds of people that were in it, some buying and others selling so that the murmur and hum of their voices and words that they used could be heard more than a league off. Some of the soldiers among us who had been in many parts of the world, in Constantinople, and all over Italy, and in Rome, said that so large a marketplace and so full of people, and so well regulated and arranged, they had never beheld before." -Bernal Diaz del Castillo, Historia Verdadera de la Conquista de la Nueva España, 1568
The Testimony of the Friar
"The seventh plague was the building of the great city of Mexico, which, in the first years, employed more people than the building of the of Jerusalem. So many were the people engaged in the work that could scarcely make his way along some streets and highways, broad as they are. In the construction some were crushed by beams, others fell from heights, others were caught beneath buildings which were being torn down in one place to be built up again in another; especially did this illicit when they
tore down the principal temples of the devil. Many Indians died there, and it was many years before they completely demolished the temples, from which they obtained an enormous amount of stone."
"The custom of this country is not the best in the world, for the Indians do the work, get the materials at their own expense, pay the stonemasons and carpenters, and if they do not bring their own food, they go hungry. They carry all the material on their backs and drag the beams and big stones with ropes, and as they had no machinery and plenty of people, they used four hundred men to transport a stone that required one hundred. It is their custom to sing and shout as they work, and their songs and cries scarcely stopped day or night, so great was the zeal which, in the early days, they brought to the building of the town." -Fray Toribio de Benavente "Motolinia". Memoriales, 1549

"The plant and animal remains recovered by the Templo Mayor Project over the course of thirty-five years are on exhibit in this room. Studying these remains gives us insight into aspects of the relationship of the Mexica people with a wide range of ecosystems, both local and further afield. They exploited some of them directly, while they accessed others through the conquest of territories in imperial expansion or through trade."
"Both plant and animal organisms underwent a series of modifications from the moment of their collection and exploitation to the time they were deposited in offerings, where they suffered other alterations from the passage of time. Therefore, it is difficult to find complete specimens and the work of recognizing species entails serious difficulties."
"Thanks to archaeobiology, which includes areas of expertise such as archaeobotany and archaeozoology, it is possible to detect diagnostic traits for the identification of species that can be compared to modern-day reference specimens. Correct biological identification offers the key to knowledge of the relationship between humankind and nature in the past."
