"On this day take time to remember those who have fallen.
But on every day after, do more; put the freedoms they died for to greater and nobler uses."
"Remembering our loved ones is breathing life into their faded images, that we might once more see their faces and pass along a tearful "I miss you".
~ Richelle E. Goodrich, Slaying Dragons

We all trooped over to a couple cemeteries for our usual visit on this day. It's a sobering thing. Bugs planted her little flag before we left. I hope everyone is having a nice day...remember.
Also...last day to submit a "profile" shot for WAW ;)
A new theme tomorrow!

Happy Bench Monday (HBM)
The beautiful quote on the front of the seat reads :-
"If there comes a day when we can't be together, keep me in your heart. I'll stay there for ever" A.A.Milne
Greenhow was an old mining village that was a major supplier of lead.
Joseph Kipling, the grandfather of Rudyard Kipling was the minister at the Methodist Chapel at Greenhow and Rudyard himself is known to have visited the village.
The church in the village (St Mary's) is reputedly the highest parish church in England still in use, though services are now only fortnightly on Sunday evenings plus major feast times
In the historic centreof Palermo, going up c.so Vittorio Emanuele; Palazzo Gulì stands between the Quattro Canti and the Cathedral. If you find the time along the way, visit the No Mafia Memorial, a cultural center that traces the history of the mafia and those who fought it through photos, audiovisuals, documents and articles. An interesting journey inside inevitable reflections and emotions for those who, like me, live and have always lived in this beautiful and dramatic land. (nomafiamemorial.org)

This memorial is dedicated to all those who died in the city of Granollers because of the air raids during the Spanish Civil War. One of those took place on the 31st May 1938 and caused 224 civilian casualties.
My great-grandfather had an appointment to the dentist on that day. A man, who was also waiting in the dental clinic, asked him if he could go first. He didn’t want to miss the bus to return to his town. My great-grandfather accepted and waited for a bit longer. Shortly after the other man departed, the air raid started. He always said that he wouldn’t have survived if he hadn’t agreed to lose his turn.

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
Gedenkspur, Pirna
For each of the more than 14,000 victims who were gassed in the Pirna-Sonnenstein killing center, a colored cross symbolizes the crime and forms part of a memorial trail that leads from Pirna's old town to the cellar of Sonnenstein Castle, the site of the crime.

The richly detailed exterior is of red sandstone from Locharbriggs quarry and the elegant interior features sandstone from nearby Thornhill. Inside the church you will find a stunning oak roof and floors of Irish and Sicilian marble under foot and superb furnishings, including a stone carving by William Vickers of Glasgow illuminated by the impressive stained glass by Oscar Paterson of Glasgow.
War has a cost beyond destruction of property. The lives cut short, the families injured and destroyed - all must be counted and remembered.
Wikipedia: "The Douaumont Ossuary (French: Ossuaire de Douaumont)[1] is a memorial containing the skeletal remains of soldiers who died on the battlefield during the Battle of Verdun in World War I. [...] The ossuary is a memorial containing the remains of both French and German soldiers who died on the Verdun battlefield. Through small outside windows, the skeletal remains of at least 130,000 unidentified combatants of both nations can be seen filling up alcoves at the lower edge of the building. On the inside of the ossuary building, the ceiling and walls are partly covered by plaques bearing names of French soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun."

One further dedicates the memorial to those who died serving in the Sherwood Foresters regiment from 1945 to 1970, while the other further dedicates it to those who died serving the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment from 1970 to 2007 and the Mercian Regiment since 2007

During this Memorial Day weekend we should remember all those who gave their lives in the service of our country and thank all the armed service members who are currently serving the country.
Took a picture a while back of the Lincoln Memorial from inside the structure, but this time I wanted one from the outside. I managed to take the shot at the blue hour. Long exposure like usual. There was all kinds of light from bikes and such, so I thought it would go well with the shot.

Patriotism consists not in waving the flag,
but in striving that our country
shall be righteous as well as strong.
Happy Memorial Day !!
Compared to the small elephant sculpture, the sculpture of the elk, the heraldic animal of East Prussia, the displaced persons of World War II who played a major role in the postwar history of Stade and its district, is life-size. Next to the elk, a memorial stone commemorating the district and town twinning with Goldap in East Prussia has stood since 1987.

The memorial with its huge blocks would not be known for beauty. It started to get on our nerves - but then in the end we got to the south west corner where there were some blocks missing and trees instead - there is hope - And I hope it is for mankind
