Greenhow was an old mining village that was a major supplier of lead.

Joseph Kipling, the grandfather of Rudyard Kipling was the minister at the Methodist Chapel at Greenhow and Rudyard himself is known to have visited the village.

The church in the village (St Mary's) is reputedly the highest parish church in England still in use, though services are now only fortnightly on Sunday evenings plus major feast times

If you find the time along the way, visit the No Mafia Memorial, a cultural center that traces the history of the mafia and those who fought it through photos, audiovisuals, documents and articles. This memorial is dedicated to all those who died in the city of Granollers because of the air raids during the Spanish Civil War. One of those took place on the 31st May 1938 and caused 224 civilian casualties.

My great-grandfather had an appointment to the dentist on that day. A man, who was also waiting in the dental clinic, asked him if he could go first. He didn’t want to miss the bus to return to his town. My great-grandfather accepted and waited for a bit longer. Shortly after the other man departed, the air raid started. He always said that he wouldn’t have survived if he hadn’t agreed to lose his turn.

Right across from the bench I posted this AM is the memorial for the Edmund Fitzgerald. Use to be on the beach but always gets washed away with storms so they've put this over by the Lighthouse away from the beach.

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

Gedenkspur, Pirna

For each of the more than 14,000 victims who were gassed in the Pirna-Sonnenstein killing center, a colored cross symbolizes the crime and forms part of a memorial trail that leads from Pirna's old town to the cellar of Sonnenstein Castle, the site of the crime.

Crichton Memorial Church, Dumfries Scotland:

The focal point of the 85 acre Crichton Estate is the cathedral-style Crichton Memorial Church, designed by Edinburgh architect Sydney Mitchell, 1890-97. The Church features a nave, chancel, transepts and a 123 feet high square tower over the crossing.

The richly detailed exterior is of red sandstone from Locharbriggs quarry and the elegant interior features sandstone from nearby Thornhill. Inside the church you will find a stunning oak roof and floors of Irish and Sicilian marble under foot and superb furnishings, including a stone carving by William Vickers of Glasgow illuminated by the impressive stained glass by Oscar Paterson of Glasgow.

The memorial tower ('Crich Stand') was completed in 1923. Dedicated to the memory of the soldiers from the Sherwood Foresters Regiment who died in World War I and World War II. Two further plaques are found beneath the railings, either side of the door. One further dedicates the memorial to those who died serving in the Sherwood Foresters regiment from 1945 to 1970, while the other further dedicates it to those who died serving the Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment from 1970 to 2007 and the Mercian Regiment since 2007

The Chaine Memorial Tower in Larne, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland, is a memorial for James Chaine, a former Member of Parliament for Antrim, who died in 1885. It is a cylindrical stone tower lighthouse with a conical roof, situated at the entrance to Larne.

Chaine developed Larne's short sea route to Scotland as well as establishing the town as a transatlantic port. The memorial, built in 1888 is a replica of an Irish round tower. The tower was completed in January 1888 and on 1 July 1899, an oil powered navigational light was installed.

The Holocaust Memorial is a very impactful memorial in Berlin and reminder of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust. The site is covered with 2,711 concrete slabs arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. A highly emotional experience walking between the slabs. The moody clouds definitely added to the experience. History the world can never forget. This beautiful tree is a symbol of life and hope.

Compared to the small elephant sculpture, the sculpture of the elk, the heraldic animal of East Prussia, the displaced persons of World War II who played a major role in the postwar history of Stade and its district, is life-size. Next to the elk, a memorial stone commemorating the district and town twinning with Goldap in East Prussia has stood since 1987.

The Victoria Memorial is a monument to Queen Victoria, located at the end of The Mall in London by the sculptor Sir Thomas Brock. Designed in 1901, it was unveiled on 16 May 1911, though it was not completed until 1924.

It was the centrepiece of an ambitious urban planning scheme, which included the creation of the Queen’s Gardens to a design by Sir Aston Webb, and the refacing of Buckingham Palace (which stands behind the memorial) by the same architect. (Wikipedia)

"I ask when it will be,

that man shall learn to live without killing,

and the wind shall come to rest."

Francesco Guggini, Auschwitz

On January 27, 1945, Soviet troops entered the Auschwitz concentration camp and revealed a horror that the world may have sensed, but for too long had ignored. For this reason, in 2005, the United Nations chose this date as the International Day of Remembrance, dedicated to all the victims of the Holocaust.

Today, twenty-one years after that symbolic act, we must ask ourselves whether that memory is truly alive. It seems that humanity itself, including the descendants of those who were victims of that horror, has forgotten the horror of the Holocaust. New massacres and new wars continue to stain our present with blood.

The number of atrocities is so great that we risk becoming accustomed to them: they pass before our eyes and, within just a few days, they are forgotten. October 7th massacre of Israel people, Gaza genocide, Iran massacre of civilians, Ukraine war, the extermination of the Kurdish people, the civil wars in Somalia and Sudan are only some of the conflicts in which the first victims continue to be innocent civilians.

In many countries, authoritarianism is becoming the norm, while armed militias kill, arrest (often using children as baits) and deported people that are only guilty of being different or protesting in a pacific way the regime,.

The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin is a place that must be visited with deep respect, because it reminds us that history can repeat itself. It warns us that violence, carried out in the name of an ideal, an interest, or too often in the name of a god, is a tragic and enduring part of human nature.

To remember is not only an act of memory — it is a responsibility toward the future.

"Io chiedo quando sara'

che l'uomo potra' imparare

a vivere senza ammazzare

e il vento riposera'"

Francesco Guggini "Auschtwitz"
