Manhattan is the most densely populated and geographically smallest of the five boroughs of New York City. The borough is also coextensive with New York County, one of the original counties of the U.S. state of New York. Located near the southern tip of the State of New York, Manhattan is based in the Eastern Time Zone and constitutes both the geographical and demographic center of the Northeast megalopolis and the urban core of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass. Over 58 million people live within 250 miles of Manhattan, which serves as New York City's economic and administrative center, cultural identifier, and the city's historical birthplace. Residents of the outer boroughs of New York City often refer to Manhattan as "the City". Manhattan has been described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world, and hosts the United Nations headquarters. Manhattan also serves as the headquarters of the global art market, with numerous art galleries and auction houses collectively hosting half of the world's art auctions.

"C'est la ville à la campagne" scandent unanimes les habitants du quartier d'Annappes à Villeneuve d'Ascq, ville pourtant bel et bien nichée au sein de la métropole (mégapole ?) lilloise. C'est vrai qu'avec ses six lacs entourés de zones boisées (dont le "lac du Héron", le plus grand et le plus connu de tous), il est possible d'enchaîner une ballade nature continue d'une bonne douzaine de kilomètres...

"This is a country town" unanimously chant the people from the neighbourhood of Annappes in Villeneuve d'Ascq, a city yet nestled within the Lille megalopolis. It is true that with its six lakes surrounded by wooded areas (including the "Lake Heron," the largest and best known of all), it is possible to go for a non-stop 12-kilometers walk...

Dimitsana is a delightful medieval village in Arcadia, Peloponnese, Greece. The picturesque village is at an altitude of 1000 meters (3,280 feet). At the site of present-day Dimitsana there was, in ancient times, the ancient Arcadian town Teuthis that had taken part in the Trojan War, but also in the colonization of Megalopolis.

In 963 AD Philosophou Monastery was founded 2,5 km from Dimitsana. The name of the town is first recorded in 967 AD in a Patriarchate's document related to Philosophou Monastery. The first gunpowder mills of the town were built under the guise of home industry in the middle of the 18th century by Bishop Ananias Lakedaimonias, who paved a revolt against the Ottoman Empire. In 1764, the movement was revealed and Turks killed Ananias and his partners. In the same year, Agapios, a wise monk, built a library, where he moved the books of the monastery. The library was growing up constantly until 1821, as the Patriarchate offered new books and there was operating a seminary, known as Φροντιστήριο Ελληνικών Γραμμάτων (Tuition Centre of Greek Literature). A lot of bishops and scholars graduated from it, among them Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople and Germanos III of Old Patras whose houses have survived in the town.

In the Greek War of Independence Dimitsana played an important role with its gunpowder mills, but during the war a large part of its library's books were destroyed, as Greek warriors used their paper in the 14 gunpowder mills, that worked day and night, supplying them with gunpowder. For this reason, Dimitsana was also known as "the Nation's powder keg".

The former French concession of Shanghai (1849-1946) is easily recognizable thanks to its avenues planted with plane trees, the "French trees" as the Chinese call them.

It is a very quiet area landlocked in the middle of a hectic megalopolis!

The Salish Sea (/ˈseɪlɪʃ/ SAY-lish) is a marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean located in the Canadian province of British Columbia and the U.S. state of Washington. It includes the Strait of Georgia, Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound, and an intricate network of connecting channels and adjoining waterways.

The sea stretches from the channels of the Discovery Islands north of the Strait of Georgia to Budd Inlet at the south end of Puget Sound. It is partially separated from the open Pacific Ocean by Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula.

Much of the coast is part of the Pacific Northwest megalopolis. Major port cities on the Salish Sea include Vancouver, Seattle, Tacoma, Everett, Bellingham, Port Angeles, and Victoria.

Europe, Greece, Attika, Athens, Urban sprawl, Lycavittos (slightly cut from T)

Athens, Greece’s three million inhabitants megalopolis is gloriously draped over the Attica hills. The Acropolis is the oldest and Lykavittos/Lykabettos (wolf hill, Thomas ‘homo homini lupus’ Hobbes would have loved the name, though I use this quote out of context here ;-) ) is the highest (277 meters).

This city view is captured from there.

"Welcome to Megalopolis - raw, hungry, at dusk, at dawn, always on the edge of darkness - surreal, expressionist, ripe with the smell of danger and the scream of victims. This city is always ready to pose for a movie director, a starlet and a loaded gun. Film noir shot in hardboiled color."

At the two peaks of the hill are a 3000-seat open-air theater, the 19th-century Agios Georgios chapel, and a restaurant.

There is a nice subterranean funicular that ascends it. It starts at the Kolonaki quarter (Aristippou Street).

The eastern side of the hill (shown here) is heavily urbanized.

One of the many fascinating exhibits at Johannesburg's "Gold Reef City". A not to be missed adventure park in Johannesburg that has magnificent exhibits relating to the city's explosive growth from a late 19th Century mining town to a giant 21st Century Megalopolis as the heart of the vast Gauteng conurbation of around 15 million people. It also offers an extraordinary array of fun park rides!

Los contrastes, las luces, los anuncios, las fachadas.... la arquitectura moderna es una de las señas de identidad de la capital nipona

A landscape captured after a typical, violent, thunderstorm in the Drakensberg Mountains (near Montusi), South Africa. The Drakensberg mountain range is the largest and highest in southern Africa, and serves as a natural geographical border between the Republic of South Africa and The Kingdom of Lesotho. The existence of South Africa as a significant industrial and mining economy depends, in no small measure, on the Lesotho Highlands watershed. Without it Johannesburg-Gauteng, southern Africa's greatest megalopolis of around 14 million people, and the African Continents richest conurbation, could not exist, as Johannesburg is the world's largest city that is not on a significant river, near and ocean or a natural lake. A great deal is owed, ro, to a long history of brilliant and ingenious hydraulic and civil engineering - as South Africa is a "dry" country.

Just a bit of ice on the still waters along the edge of the river this morning. In one direction: A sleepy river with lots of waterfowl overhead heading off everywhere. In the other direction: FedEx tandem trailers boom over the bridge on their way to the interstate. It's strange sometimes taking landscape photos within a megalopolis

The walls of the ancient Messinia .

The city was named after the mythical Queen Messina ,

daughter of the king of Argos Triopios . Thus began the construction of the wall , after the allied sacrifices to local gods and heroes .

The city was founded in the winter of 370 BC -369 BC of the Theban general Epaminondas , after the victory over the Spartans in the battle of Leuctra and the invasion of Laconia . Epaminondas freed Messenia from Spartan influence and chose the foot of Mount Ithomi to build the capital of free Messenians . It was built almost simultaneously with the Arcadian Megalopolis to Sparta ruled by hostile states and to eliminate the influence of outside Laconia

The wall that surrounded Messina is extremely long (circumference 9 km) and time of Pausanias was already entirely stone , which caused great surprise as the customary adobe superstructure. He had two monumental gates , the Arcadian ( or gate Megalopolis ) and Laconia . At regular intervals was reinforced -storey stone square and round towers . Today is better preserved on the north side, on both sides of the Arcadian gate.
