Life Starts Over Again When It Gets Crisp in the Fall
- F. Scott Fitzgerald
The Nuthatch:
A common bird with clean black, gray, and white markings, White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside.
White-breasted Nuthatches may be small, but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you right to them.
The White-breasted Nuthatch is normally territorial throughout the year, with pairs staying together. The male has to spend more time looking out for predators when he’s alone than while he’s with his mate. That’s the pattern for most birds, and one reason why birds spend so much time in flocks.
In winter, White-breasted Nuthatches join foraging flocks led by chickadees or titmice, perhaps partly because it makes food easier to find and partly because more birds can keep an eye out for predators.
If you see a White-breasted Nuthatch making lots of quick trips to and from your feeder – too many for it to be eating them all – it may be storing the seeds for later in the winter, by wedging them into furrows in the bark of nearby trees.
The oldest known White-breasted Nuthatch was at least 9 years, 9 months old when it was found in Colorado in 1971.

Take Me to Church
Hozier
My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She's the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick", you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom"
The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
A-, Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
If I'm a pagan of the good times
My lover's the sunlight
To keep the Goddess on my side
She demands a sacrifice
Drain the whole sea
Get something shiny
Something meaty for the main course
That's a fine looking high horse
What you got in the stable?
We've a lot of starving faithful
That looks tasty
That looks plenty
This is hungry work
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins so you can sharpen your knife
Offer me my deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
No masters or kings when the ritual begins
There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin
In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene
Only then I am human
Only then I am clean
Oh, oh, Amen, Amen, Amen

I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death

One can easily spot the chicken of the woods mushroom by its impressive size and vibrant yellow-orange colors. This large polypore has surprised many a nature lover the first time they found it! Yet, did you know they’re also edible and considered a delicacy in many parts of the world?
A highly sought-after top edible mushroom, Chicken of the woods is excellent for beginner foragers. There are no real lookalikes, and the bright orange shelf-like growth makes it easy to see. Finding Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sp.) is known to inspire wild chicken dances in the middle of the forest. With this dense, meaty textured mushroom, you’ll eat well for days.
This mushroom has a lemony, meaty taste. Some think it tastes like its chicken namesake; others describe the flavor as being more like crab or lobster. Whatever your opinion, the chicken fungus makes a great substitute for meat in almost any dish.
This is one of my favourite trees. I like it best in wintertime...stark and denuded, showing what it's made of.... a chorus line of distant trees shuffling in unison and singing doo-wap harmonies behind it.
I'm often struck by how much trees (and certain other things in nature, like river deltas) resemble circulatory systems. This tree always makes me think of a brain... or how one might look with all the grey meaty stuff stripped away, and just the conduits preserved...
The pic looks looks a little odd for two reasons. 1. I shot it looking pretty much directly into the sun. (Ouch.) That's where the alien-ish green blob comes from. 2. I did three exposures and blended them, using Photomatix. Not the best result I've got but... bah. I just don't care any more. I'm so %$(*&%$ing uninspired I can hardly stand it.
Cedar waxwings were busy hawking mayflies and midges from a very prolific riffle on the Turkey River this evening. This waxwing is watching intently for a meaty morsel to flutter up from the flow.

One of the top priorities on last week's chase was the reflection shot at Butler Creek outside of Noel. The delays coming south helped our cause as the light swung around for the meaty stretch of chasing territory between Neosho and Decatur.
I don't really know what it captured. It was very animated with leaps and fluttering while pecking at the grass. I know they eat snails, lizards, frog, snakes in addition to corn and etc. Could be something meaty and tasty in that root ball.
Not even sure that IS a root ball because the distance was too far and photo too cropped for a good fix on what the crane dug up. If any of my friends here know, please share.
Another from Ringing Roger. Bit of a meaty rock at the front but liked the shape of it. Hope everyone has a Happy New Year.
Most wood warblers have moved south of the Driftless Region by late September but we still have a few straggler species left to delight our eyes when we're out for a walk in the woods. This young orange-crowned warbler is hoping to find a big meaty bug for breakfast on a dark and damp foggy morning.

*****************************************************************************
Cantharellus cibarius, commonly known as the chanterelle, golden chanterelle or girolle, is a fungus. It is probably the best known species of the genus Cantharellus, if not the entire family of Cantharellaceae. It is orange or yellow, meaty and funnel-shaped. On the lower surface, underneath the smooth cap, it has gill-like ridges that run almost all the way down its stipe, which tapers down seamlessly from the cap. It emits a fruity aroma, reminiscent of apricots and a mildly peppery taste (hence its German name, Pfifferling) and is considered an excellent edible mushroom.
The sky at first light today was grey and snow filled. This red kite had spotted a meaty morsel in my garden, it made repeated scouting passes over the potential meal, though the light was rapidly disappearing with the advancing snowfall. When it did finally make a dive the light has passed and the photo wasn’t great. But for the kites woes a buzzard flew in and made away with the meal.

One of the last edible mushrooms to fruit in the fall season, these big solid meaty mushrooms are abundant anywhere that elm and boxelder trees grow. They always pop out of the tree where there was a wound or where a branch died and broke away, hence the other common name - knothole mushroom. They taste great sliced up in pasta dishes.
Lobster season is open now in Iowa, at least the season for lobster mushrooms! These remarkable mushrooms show another form of parasitism, since the reddish color is caused by a secondary fungus that creates that hard orange crust around what was once a mushy white "milk" mushroom in the genus Lactarius. As Hypomyces lactifluorum attacks the milk mushroom, it also deforms it into those distinctive convoluted shapes. By the way, lobster mushrooms are solid and meaty and make a mighty fine meal, at least if you like the taste of lobster.
One of the very many fountains you can find in Rome - this one is in Villa Borghese.
The fountain is also known as Fontana di Esculapio - meaning the fountain of Asclepius, while fiocco is Italian for bow or ribbon, or a specific piece of meat, or a kind of sail, but it is also a last name. So I can't really tell if it is named after someone, or if there is some meaty sail-ribbon-aspect to this fountain (though I can't really see it). It was built 1830-1834 by Luigi Canina.

Grey heron (Ardea cinerea) was not fishing but painstakingly searching the shore of the river Wandel in Morden Hall Park. May be looking for Moorhen chicks (adults were above) or something else. Didn't see the heron catching anything. It was quite ignorant of my camera, but flew away when a walker with a dog appeared. Morden, England
An attractive cluster of Glistening Inkcaps (Coprinellus micaceus) which lost of all its glister thanks to rainy weather. The specific epithet ‘micaceus’ came from the Latin word ‘mica’ meaning “small crumb” with the reference to tiny glittering fragments of veil which typically dusting caps of immature just emerged fruit bodies. These are easily lost in wet and rainy weather which is likely the case here.
In the past these small fungi were considered as close relatives of much larger and more “meaty” Shaggy Inkcap from Coprinus genera. Recent DNA analysis however showed that they are distinct species. Hence suffix ‘-ellus’ was added to their scientific name with the meaning “Coprinus-like with tiny fruiting bodies”.
This species is edible when young but if growing in a wrong spot (e.g. roadside), can become poisonous easily accumulating large amount of heavy metals. Also, as all Inkcaps, they are self-destruct themselves through autodigestion process called deliquescence, and can lose their appetising look quickly. A large area of wooden floor was covered with blackish semi-dissolved bodies around this fresher group. Beechwood. Lansdown near Bath. BANES, Somerset, England, U.K.
Thank you for your visit, favours and comments, much appreciated.
I could see this marvelous mushroom fruiting from about a block away out in the woods today. Also known as the chicken of the woods, I can attest to its wonderful meaty taste as I sampled some of those shelves for supper.
Since Paul V. Heath's (1950-) publication in Calyx 56 (4) (1997), p.136, our Senecio is called a Curio. The scientific article is rather hard to find and the new taxonomical designation hasn't yet caught on, so I keep to the Hortus's Senecio.
Indeed, this succulent has gone by confusingly many names. The Supplement to 'Linnaeus' at the end of the eighteenth century uses the name Cacalia carnosa; later it's Kleinia and later again the more familiar Senecio. The 'articulatus' is for the articulate stems, sectioned much as a string of sausages or hot-dogs, worsies in Afrikaans. I suppose the Latin 'carnosa' by which it was known in the times of Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) who collected it in South Africa - as the Supplement says - suggests those sausages.
Anyway, in the dry glass house of the Hortus this morning its flowers were appropriately being visited by a Blue Bottle Fly, a so-called Flesh Fly. It's seeking nectar, but will lay its eggs later in something meaty.

These lovely wood blewits were fruiting on my dad's lawn today. You know the weather conditions are getting cold when these pretty pale purple mushrooms appear. They typically pop up in wood mulch or pine needle duff. These delightful fungi have a delicate mushroom flavor with a fine meaty texture. Do be careful though, if picking blewits for consumption, for there are other purple mushrooms found in the fall that could kill you.

Sisymbrium irio L.; London rocket
A delightful and tasty plant. London Rocket Mustard is a naturalized plant in the Sonoran Desert. It spreads freely and blooms in my desert garden in Central Tucson at about the same time as in Sabino Canyon, northeast of Tucson, Arizona.
I should trim these seed strings off to see if new flowers will come along...

Jane Haddad's recipe for a London Rocket Smoothie sounds wonderful. I will try it today.
greensmoothiehabit.com/video/recipes/10-recipes/203-londo...
Jane Haddad's Recipe
"My London Rocket green smoothie contains wild greens (London Rocket is an edible winter weed) and is a simple, savory cocktail. Before you go picking wild greens, get educated so you don't poison yourself..."
See Jane's page for links to wild greens experts.
"London Rocket is a common wild green like lambsquarters and dandelion."
My Secret Ingredient
"So, I decided to go with a savory smoothie, and we're not gonna use a whole bunch of it, because it is strong, so I took some of the London Rocket leaves off of the stem and I'm using a small handful. Add this small handful of the London Rocket to your blender. Now for my special ingredient. A sprig of fresh rosemary. It's so intoxicating. It has such an aromatic, perfume-y smell to it. I thought it might be just the right thing to accent the mustardy like London Rocket. We're gonna find out today. So, I'm adding one sprig and I took the little leaves of the rosemary off of the stem, so you see you have just a little bit like this. Smells so wonderful. The thought of eating it and getting into new greens for my green smoothies is very exciting."
"We must introduce new greens into our green smoothie rotation. It keeps our appetite for green smoothies alive, and it's good for our nutrition. And rosemary is anti-inflammatory. Then I'm going to use 3 Roma tomatoes, also known as plum tomatoes. Look at that... the tomatoes have a lot of juice in them, so I'm not going to add any water to this. I want to make it like a thick cocktail. Add all 3 tomatoes to the Vitamix."
"Here's what you've got: small handful of the London Rocket, the leaves from the one sprig of rosemary, and 3 plum tomatoes. Plum tomatoes are kind of meaty, too, so that's why I chose them. Blend it up. It should only take 20-30 seconds. So excited to have a new smoothie for myself and for you. This is a savory, low glycemic, London Rocket cocktail."
Something New
"I think I've come up with something new here. The London Rocket and the Rosemary. Wow... ... very mild. Oh, and a word of caution about going out and picking your own edibile weeds. I did not pick this myself. Morgan got it direct from the farmer at the orchard and then she gave me some. I am not an edibile wild weed expert. I don't even trust myself to go out there, other than dandelion, and know what I'm doing."
"So, get your education before you go and pick a weed and decide to eat it, because there are plenty of poisonous weeds out there. This is a winner. This is a success. I get so excited when something I'm thinking about in my head actually comes out in the blender and then I can taste it and truly enjoy it."
It does sound delicious!

If you zoom in, the leaf almost looks like a raw piece of well-developed piece of meat. While almost all trees had lost their leaves, this shrub still had leaves that ranged from fiery red to dark purple. Two weeks ago I had the chance to get another Cosina matched macro adapter. A Cosina 100mm f3.5 (AF version) was also included. 😉 This is a photo from the first round of testing, shot with the said 1:1 adapter, aperture f8.0, ooc.
These lobster mushrooms not only look super-cool but they taste fantastic. I sauteed these for supper and with their orange outside color, firm meaty flesh and slight seafood flavor they were even better than real lobster. The orange "crust" you see on these two mushrooms is the parasitic Hypomyces lactiflourum fungus. It attacked those two previously white mushrooms in the Russula genus and totally engulfed them - distorting the normal flat white caps into raised orange fans. Some similar Russula mushrooms would make us very sick but Hypomyces lactiflourum never makes a mistake on ID so these colorful mushrooms are always safe to eat.
