The truth is I look just like both of my parents, and also like neither of them. I have my mother's bone structure. I have my father's chin. My mother is very fair -- pale skin, straight blond hair, blue eyes. My father is dark -- skin the color of cinnamon dust, curly black hair, black eyes (with the oddest ring of blue outside the irises... they're fascinating). I am a mixture of the two: skin darker than my mom's and lighter than my dad's, eyes the color of coffee beans, curly red-brown-black (communist) hair. I think the dimples are from my dad.

This isn't a sad story.

My parents split up when I was two, so I have no real memories of the two of them together as a couple. People who grew up in two-parent homes feel sorry for me for this, but it's okay. It is what it is. I remember my father as a part of my childhood, of course, in random, rare visits. He always seemed like a pretty cool guy, but I couldn't say I knew him much. When I was 10, he left the United States and went back home to Yemen, presumably for a 6-month visit, but it stretched out for 6 years. He didn't call, he didn't write. I thought I'd never see him again. But one day in May in my 16th year, I was out with my mom running errands, and when we returned home, there he was, standing in front of our house. My dad is, I think, 5'10", but he seemed like the tallest man in America. He was back. I had a dad again. Or perhaps for the first time ever.

For a few months, maybe a year, we were in pretty regular contact. But he and I are too much alike: too emotionally distant, too unsure of how to love people. Our constant contact drifted into semi-constant contact, and then occasional contact, and then we'd maybe see each other once a year. I don't blame him for this. It's equally my fault.

But this isn't a sad story. I'm not sad about it, I promise you.

Anyway, the point is that as I've gotten older, I've noticed myself looking more and more like my father. We make all the same facial expressions, and this goofy squinty grin is a classic example. The first time I noticed it was sometime he was visiting and my mom said something weird and we looked at each other, and I noticed for the first time that his face mirrored mine. There's a photograph of the two of us, taken by my mother, where he's standing behind me and we're both giving my mom the same "just take the damn picture already" look. I always thought that things like facial expressions were learned, but apparently not. My own face is proof.

I'm like him in other ways too. We have the same slyness, the same inscrutability, the same intense stare. My sideways smirk comes from him. So does the careless charm and the indifference. I would've been okay inheriting the long legs and the natural grace, but I didn't get to pick traits out before birth (that has to be a shortcoming in the order of things, I think).

So yes, I look just like my dad, and more so the older I get. I suppose this means that by the time I'm 40 I'll totally look like an Arab dude, though I hope with much less facial hair.

We have lots of forget-me-nots in our garden, but this was taken whilst trying out my phone's camera on a dog walk. I liked how one looked almost purple.

That's me in the reflection and that's my daughter. I'm not a stalker. But, apparently, I have stalker hair. Not the vibe I was going for. :-)

'Me and her' On Black

So there it is... plain evidence, thanks to TillahWillah for the archives of my bald state. Check out the permanent crease in my head from my glasses....

This yellow dragonfly was ready to fly away of me anytime :)
