REMEMBER WHEN MONDAY WAS LAUNDRY DAY?
You spent the entire day washing the clothes and bedding, carrying the heavy, wet stuff out to the clothesline in bushel baskets made of thin wooden slats with metal handles that cut into your fingers. If you were lucky, it would be a sunny, breezy day so the laundry would dry quickly but not blow off the clothesline. Then you could rotate the dried things off as you hung out more wet things and not have to worry about running out of clothespins. It was HARD work.
Now you can do laundry 24/7. It's no longer a big deal--you can do it as an afterthought. Don't you just love it?
I remembered a song from my youth about Monday being washday, Tuesday ironing etc.
On 6 May 1966, the record "2 Day's Monday" (ref R5443) was released in the UK on the Parlophone label. This was the first single from The Scaffold, and it was produced by George Martin of Beatles production fame.
The Scaffold were 3 Liverpudlian artists who came together in the height of sixties Liverpool-mania to write and/or record a variety of off-the-wall material, including a lot of children's stuff, "Thank U Very Much" and their famous anthem, "Lily The Pink", featuring Jack Bruce (Cream), Graham Nash (Hollies and Crosby Stills & Nash), and the pre-Elton John, Reg Dwight.
The trio consisted of:
- John Gorman, who subsequently continued in British TV, most notably with Christ Tarrant and Sally James in the groundbreaking children's Saturday morning show "Tiswas";
- Roger McGough, the true poet of the group, who continues to write, publish and perform his own material;
- Mike McGear, who changed his name to avoid accusations of trading on his brother's fame. His real name is McCartney, and yes, he is Paul's brother. He pursued a subsequent career as a photographer.
Monday's Wash Day
Today is Monday, Today is Monday,
Monday's wash day, Everybody happy?
Well, I should say!
Today is Tuesday, Today is Tuesday,
Tuesday Ironing, Monday washday
Everybody happy? Well, I should say.
Today is Wednesday, Today is Wednesday,
Wednesday Cleaning, Tuesday Ironing, Monday washday,
Everybody happy? Well, I should say.
Today is Thursday, Today is Thursday,
Thursday baking, (a little faster) Wednesday cleaning, Tuesday ironing, Monday washday,
Everybody happy? Well, I should say.
Today is Friday, Today is Friday,
Friday fiii-sh, (a little faster) Thursday baking, Wednesday cleaning, Tuesday ironing, Monday washday,
Everybody happy? Well, I should say.
Today is Saturday, Today is Saturday,
Saturday shopping, Friday fiii-sh, (faster) Thursday baking, Wednesday cleaning, Tuesday ironing, Monday washday,
Everybody happy? Well, I should say.
(Hushed and reverent voice) Today is Sunday, Today is Sunday,
(very hushed) Sunday church,
(Louder) Saturday shopping, Friday fiii-sh, Thursday baking, Wednesday cleaning,
Tuesday ironing, Monday washday, Everybody happy?
Well I should Say!
The Scaffold were a comedy, poetry and music trio from Liverpool, England, consisting of musical performer Mike McGear (real name Peter Michael McCartney, the brother of Paul McCartney), poet Roger McGough and comic entertainer John Gorman. I can remember Lilly the Pink … my first single purchase and Gin Gan Goolie! Often sung by our Scout Group around camp fires!
A special inclusion for all of my deaf viewers, although those of you who can hear are welcome to enjoy it as well!
SOME MUSIC I LIKE:
How did this come about? I think at some point I asked my regular viewers, "What songs do you like?" and I got zilch by way of response. So I figured, you gotta lead by example and I thought I'd put together a list of about 100 songs I really like. But like a hungry snake, the list just kept growing, till now it's getting near 800. Bottom line is, it's all about enjoyment, so here's a bunch of songs from my inner iPod which I enjoyed and I hope you will too.

That's the imaginary playlist for the imaginary radio station KJIM, broadcasting nothing but songs I approve of 24/7 through your imagination. While only 800 may seem restrictive, allow me to inquire whether your own (real) local oldies station actually plays 800 different songs? Or is their playlist actually a lot more narrow? Anyhow, don't be surprised if I add more to this list only sparingly. For now I feel like giving this a break because it's gotten to the point where every time I think of a song I have to check this whole list to make sure it isn't already here.
SSC 28/11/20: create an image to go with some music. The music I’ve chosen is the song ‘Lily the Pink’ by The Scaffold; well, it had to be, really, as you will see! I haven’t been able to embed a link to it, but Vince has put it in his comment - thanks Vince!
What this cruelly afflicted world needs right now are people who can be “the saviours of the human race, by inventing medicinal compounds, most efficacious in every case”. People indeed like Lily the Pink, the eponymous heroine of the 1968 UK No 1 hit by The Scaffold. Not everyone will have heard of them, but their line up included Mike McGear, Paul McCartney’s younger brother, and backing vocals on the song included a certain Reg Dwight, now known as Elton John. The song itself was derived from an earlier American folk song generally known as ‘The Ballad of Lydia Pinkham’, which was inspired by a herbal-alcoholic patent medicine for women, mass-marketed in the United States from 1876 onwards as ‘Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound’. Maybe that redoubtable lady is even now inspiring the dedicated teams at Pfizer and AstraZeneca?
As to the image to go with it, I know we’re discouraged from posting archive shots to the group, but I’ve already posted most of my recent photos of our Golden Retriever, and besides, I couldn’t resist creating this image from a photo of her when she was just 2 months old, on her first day here. There were 9 pups in the litter, and Jill, the lady who’d bred them, had given them all collars of different colours to be able to tell them apart. The pups all looked much the same to me, but Mrs D very quickly set her heart on this one, which happened to be the pup with the pink collar. So when we were choosing a name for her, and Mrs D suggested ‘Lily’, I clinched it when I remembered the song. She’s definitely our ‘Lily the Pink’, and of course all her accessories are pink.

Found in my files today is a candid shot (not previously uploaded) of internationally renowned photographer, Mike McCartney, brother of Sir Paul McCartney of Beatles fame, and known in a previous (pre photographer) showbiz life as Mike McGear.
I bought this album in 1974. It is produced by Paul McCartney. Mike McGear’s (Paul’s Brother) backing band for this recording is “Wings”.
Paul McCartney and Long John Baldry discussing the late arrival of the afternoon train from Euston? Photo: Mike McGear.
... acclaimed international photographer, author, musician, (as well as being one of the three photo contest judges) and of course, Sir Paul's brother - with (left) Cultural & Community Champion, Donna Williamson, another judge. The third judge was the renowed Liverpudlian photographer and film maker, Mark McNulty.
Little did I realise as I "clicked" that a cheque with my name on was in the envelope he's holding, and that I had won.
What a wonderful night it was as the contest results were announced. And, what a wonderful bunch of people I found myself among, including not just the famous, but also some of Flickr's finest Flickr-friends - both old and new.
With Pete Best left, and Bruce Channel third from right in the blazer. The guy standing next to John Lennon is Delbert McClintock who played the distinctive harmonica on Channel's hit "Hey Baby." Photo Mike McGear.

The Scaffold were a comedy, poetry and music trio from Liverpool, consisting of Mike McGear (real name Peter Michael McCartney, the brother of Paul McCartney), Roger McGough and John Gorman
The Scaffold performed a mixture of comic songs, comedy sketches and the poetry of McGough, as evidenced on their 1968 live album, and released a number of singles and albums on Parlophone and EMI between 1966 and 1971, with several more on Island, Warner Bros. and Bronze thereafter. The group also wrote and sang the theme tune to the BBC comedy 'The Liver Birds' which aired from 1969-1978
The Scaffold achieved Top 10 success in the UK with:-
"Thank U Very Much" (# 4), composed by McGear;
"Lily the Pink" (# 1), based on a traditional song about Lydia Pinkham. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.
"Liverpool Lou" (# 7) (written by Dominic Behan), recorded during the 1974 McGear sessions with Wings.
In addition to the hit singles, The Scaffold's output included four albums: The Scaffold on Parlophone in 1968, L. the P. on Parlophone in 1969, Fresh Liver on Island in 1973, and Sold Out on WB in 1975. The Scaffold's first greatest hits album, entitled Singles As & Bs, was released on See For Miles Records in 1982. This was followed by a second greatest hits collection, the first on Compact Disc, The Scaffold: The Songs, in 1992. Three additional compilations of the band's Parlophone tracks have since been released (two of which also include the Warner Bros. “Liverpool Lou” track).
Jack Bruce, Elton John, Graham Nash and Jimi Hendrix were among the session musicians who performed on The Scaffold's early records (since none of the trio was a musician). Tim Rice, who was at that time an assistant to their producer Norrie Paramor, contributed backing vocals to some of their material.

The Liverpool Institute High School for Boys closed in 1985.
Notable pupils included Paul McCartney, 1953-1960 ( a musician ) , George Harrison , 1954- 1959 ( another musician ) , Mike McCartney, 1955-1961 ( musician Mike McGear in The Scaffold ) , Neil Aspinall, 1954-1959 ( Beatles' road manager, MD of Apple Corp ) , Les Chadwick, 1954-1959 ( member of Gerry & The Pacemakers ) and Peter Sissons, 1953-1961 ( news broadcaster ) .
After the school's closure in 1985, Paul McCartney returned one night to reminisce about his school days, while he was writing his 'Liverpool Oratorio'. McCartney was determined to save the building somehow. What was needed was an idea that could secure the building's future. As it happened, during a conversation with Sir George Martin, the idea of a 'fame school' emerged and LIPA ( The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts ) eventually came into being .
Acknowledged to be Paul McCartneys first serious girl friend - Dot Rhone. Taken at Forthlin Road in the back garden. Mike McGear.
The childhood home of Paul McCartney.
20 Forthlin Road is a National Trust property in south Liverpool, Merseyside, England.
Sir Paul McCartney lived there for several years before he rose to fame with The Beatles in the early 1960s. It was also the home of his brother, Michael McCartney (also known as Mike McGear).
The house was built by the local authority during the 1920s and has been in the ownership of the National Trust since 1995. The Trust markets the house as "the birthplace of the Beatles", since this is the place where The Beatles composed and rehearsed their earliest songs. It was also the birthplace of the group The Scaffold, of which Michael McCartney was a member.

At 'Cafe Sport Express' in Liverpool One for photo contest awards ceremony, where I was named as one of the three different category winners. I didn't know when I took the shot that a cheque with my name on was in that envelope.
And btw, contrary to many media reports of brother Paul's wedding yesterday, Mike was NOT best man

Paul McCartney (born 18 June 1942) is an English singer, songwriter and musician who gained worldwide fame as co-lead vocalist, co-songwriter and bassist for the Beatles. One of the most successful composers and performers of all time, he is known for his melodic approach to bass-playing, versatile and wide tenor vocal range, and musical eclecticism, exploring styles ranging from pre-rock 'n' roll pop to classical and electronica. His songwriting partnership with John Lennon remains the most successful in history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_McCartney

A Wilbert Harrison song. Flip > Seabreezes. The best version. This version is only on this single - not on any LP or CD. Michael McGear, Brother of Paul McCartney did also a very good version of this Bryan Ferry SEABREEZES song on his first LP.
