Maymont was originally a 100-acre Victorian estate in Richmond, Virginia, owned by James and Sallie Dooley. Upon their deaths, the estate was bequeathed to the city of Richmond. It is now a park open to the public.

In April on our tour of botanical gardens in Virginia, my wife and I were enchanted by the Maymont Estate in Richmond. With its expansive grounds of 100 acres, Maymont contains a collection of gardens, parklands, a mansion, wetlands, an arboretum and a grotto. There's a lot to absorb. This image is of the Italian garden which sits on top of an escapment. It features a lot of stonework, fountains and a stairway leading down to the Japanese garden. Its large pergola features a dome on one end and a gateway at the other with the inscription 'Via Florum'. From one of its seats, you have a great panorama of the estate.
