This week some of us have been building numbers beyond ten using base ten blocks. We played a game with dice and when we got to ten ones we traded out for a ten stick :)

At Casey Elementary School on Camp Casey Jan. 14, students and parents take part in the school's second annual Math Madness workshop, which aimed to build math proficiency by using games and other activities to make the subject enjoyable for youngsters. In one of those activities, for example, competing groups had to use 20 strands of uncooked spaghetti and about a yard of masking tape to create the tallest possible structure that would support a marshmallow for at least 30 seconds without collapsing. - U.S. Army photo by Pfc. as a matter of fact, this IS another math game. i guess i like inventing them at least as much as T like to play them. this one i've seen all over the internet, but we put our own spin on it. it's simply an old can filled with popsicle sticks. each stick has a math problem on it, except some say "ka-BOOM!" to play, we take turns pulling out a stick. if you can answer, you keep the stick. if you pull a "ka-BOOM," you return all your sticks. our twist is the challenge: if you think your opponent has answered incorrectly, you call a challenge and use the adding machine (a number line with a sliding arrow on it) to verify. if the challenger was correct, he collects the stick. if the player was correct, he takes a stick from the challenger. winner is the first person to have 10 sticks.

IHTSW?! Number
WIT: Helping my eldest with math homework (nothing like waiting for the last minute) gave me the idea for this assignment. I thought of several things. Some were too personal, some were too boring (who really cares to see how much longer is left on my washing machine or what the clock on the stove looks like). I just didn't get out of the house to look for and photograph interesting house numbers and packaging didn't appeal to me. I'm pleased with how this turned out.
In post, I played with levels and did a square crop.

we each took a "hundred board" sheet, took turns rolling the dice, adding them up and marking off that many numbers. first to get to 100 wins.

Street artist Banksy curated a gallery of subversive and satirical pieces based on theme parks. The gallery was located at Tropicana, itself a dismal shadow of its former self, a lido on the coast of the Severn Estuary at Weston-Super-Mare. Tropicana itself was closed around the turn of the 21st century, and has fallen into disrepair since. The installation was assembled largely in secret.
I was particularly amused by this section of graffiti in Jimmy Cauty's model village depicting some seemingly quite complicated maths.
