The Beatles covered Carl Perkins' "Matchbox" in 1964, with Ringo Starr on lead vocals. It was released on the ‘Long Tall Sally’ EP in the UK and ‘Something New’ in the US.
Matchbox with polymer clay mosaic.
I was "playing" with polymer clay again after a long time and thought that the matchboxes could be a bit more colourful. And so I covered the matchboxes with polymer clay mosaic, both sides of course.

Pictured here is my entry for this week's Macro Monday topic -- B/W Center Square. This Matchbox car and I go way back, as this was one of my favorite toy cars back when I was a kid. I actually had saved a number of these old cars, and passed them along to my son -- who enjoyed playing with them for a time as well.
My son eventually grew out of the toy car stage (as kids do), and this old lime green Ford matchbox car went back in the box once again... Having now survived two generations, but still in excellent condition.
Who would've guessed that macro photography would've reunited me with my old die-cast metal friend one more time. It was a lot of fun photographing this car, which brought back some fond memories -- not only of my childhood, but my son's as well.
It'll go back in the box now, and stay there a while more... Who knows what new future adventures or memories will be in store for it... Time will tell, but either way I'll look forward to our next meeting somewhere down the road. ;)
Hope everyone had a great weekend... HMM to all!

"Macro Monday - Matchbox Macro" is a non-HDR image that was processed using a combination of ACR, Photoshop, and Topaz Labs plugins (Adjust, BW Effects, AI Clear, Denoise, Glow, Impression and Texture Effects).
I keep picking these up at toyfairs for 50p but usually £1 . These are complete with blades but I do have a similar amount with out .
And two of the rarer with grey plastic wheels .

Although i've long tired of chasing all the latest Hot Wheels releases I still ensure I never miss out on any Matchbox basics and will try to source them from anywhere I can get them. Quite often its usually all the way from the US but UK stockists have got notably better since 2025 with very few batches actually missing. Theres no guarantee my own area will get these new mixes in, my area is still resolutely stuck on Case C though travelling further afield did yield a small Case H haul.
A Poundland in Gloucester city centre came up with some goodies despite the pegs already being raided which included a few of the brand new recoloured 2018 Toyota 4Runner. Now coloured in a glossy but drab non metallic green I can already sense peg warming status here even if I actually like the casting itself.

THANK YOU!! I love this so much! ♥
I've never seen a kawaii matchbox with 4 drawers...so cute!!

With the Matchbox The Movie not due to appear on screens until October I have no idea what part each of the new associated castings play. I'm sure many US collectors in particular are happy to see the return of a Stock Car model to the line and one which is fully licensed too.
Matchbox call it just a "Chevrolet Stock Car" so i've no idea which Chevrolet its based on but the casting does pretty much what it says on "the tin". It looks a tad flat proportionally but does look good in its all over liveries, chrome disc wheels and minimal front tampo to the front.
Part of the new five vehicle set which has been launched in conjunction with said movie.

It remains to be seen whether ANY of the new Matchbox The Movie releases appear here in the UK, I shall not hold my breath though as we don't even get Moving Parts or Collectors anymore! A great shame as they are now offering a full suite of movie themed goodies from basic mainlines, Moving Parts to premium!
This Ford GT40 slots neatly into the associated Moving Parts assortment with its opening rear engine hatch though i'm not entirely sure whether this is a modified basic mainline or a totally new casting which strongly resembles the original. Its tri-spoke wheels and tampo detailing certainly gives off the impression its an off-shoot of the original basic mainline even if its date underneath says 2021.

I'm ALWAYS happy to see the Matchbox 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 in all its many guises over the years as even after nigh on two decades it still looks fresh and relevant. None more so than this brand new Matchbox The Movie themed recolour which appears in an associated five vehicle set.
How can anyone not appreciate its super clean all white body with contrasting black roof and neat front and rear tampo detailing.

There is evidence Poundland stores are FINALLY moving away from 2026 Case C Matchbox which have haunted their pegs since January. Cases F and G have been spotted though of course my nearest two are still stuck on C. In a little effort to do my bit in clearing out their old stock I picked up a small handful of models including another 1980 Jeep J10 Stepside.
On reflection a better casting some people give it credit for, ok its not a particularly internationally known vehicle, but its certainly an intersting choice which debuts well in this metallic maroon colour complete with Honcho trim graphics and plenty of chrome.

There has been a LOT to love regarding the large amount of diecasts recently donated to my collection thanks to a good friend disposing of his childhood toys. Loads of gaps now filled and mainly all in very presentable condition.
This beast probably goes straight to the top of the list though, the Matchbox Superkings Dodge Kew Fargo Truck with Articulated Horse Van is just a thing of beauty. A vision of 1960's modernism with its then current bonneted truck and a large sized trailer complete with domed viewing platform.
First introduced in 1967 its an extremely substantial piece in an era when all metal diecasts were the norm and full of features such as multi-opening doors and removable rubber tyres.
In virtually mint but unboxed condition.

For most Matchbox collectors this 1940 Dodge V-Series Truck is a new casting as it only briefly appeared for the US only Dodge series a few years ago and then disappeared. It finally gets its basic mainline debut in this years Case K assortment and is already proving popular.
A crisply cast metal body sits atop a plastic base which includes the load bed, running boards and front headlights and is a fair compromise for the low price point its expected to be sold at in various countries. Tampo detailing is limited to the front only but overall its a casting worth waiting for.

My old college roommate this week gave me a box of Matchbox cars that he had when he was a kid. This Lotus F1 car and a couple of others like it were in the mix.

It still has some mud on it from its last time out. The trailer hitch was missing but it was fairly easy to make a reasonable facsimile from a wire paper clip.
For all the large amounts of 2026 Matchbox Case B and quickly followed by C in various UK retailers the brand new 1993 Toyota Celica remains hyped and is always the first to disappear from the pegs. I was fortunate in finding a few at my local Poundland back in mid December, I must have been just as they had restocked as two of them were right at the front of the pegs in full view!
A decent low cost replica of the fifth generation Celica, its by no means perfect but theres certainly no complaints regarding its vehicle choice, paint finish and on point front and rear tampo detailing.

The UK continues to be denied a proper stockist of the Matchbox Moving Parts series despite always selling well when they briefly were! Most collectors can agree the Moving Parts line is probably the sweet spot of the entire brand combining sensible toy aimed prices with usually more detailing and of course working features.
Their fairly recent 2024 Toyota Sequoia TRD Pro gets a new recolour and despite it being a vehicle which i'm not familiar with does impress with its sizeable bulk even if its front tampo detailing looks a tad clunky.

If you are a fan of the Matchbox brand you've probably already heard all the hype about the upcoming Matchbox The Movie featuring John Cena and Jessica Biel amongst others. Due to be released this October on Apple TV its clearly aimed at a young audience and thus its extremely doubtful i'll watch it but do hope it raises the awareness of this historic brand whos spotlight has long been stolen by its corporate bedfellow Hot Wheels.
Predictably, but quite rightly, Matchbox have wasted no time in bringing out scores of new castings and recolours to tie in with the new movie. From basics to five packs, from Moving Parts to premium Collectors all bases have been covered though it remains to be seen whether any actually appear in the spiritual birthplace of the brand!
Instantly one of my favourites is their new 1973 VW T2B which is available as a basic and also this Moving Parts equivalent and is a brand new casting despite Matchbox already having a T2 in their back catalogue. All the right ingredients are present, a superbly crisply cast item with disc wheels, chrome in all the right places, on point tampo detailing and an opening side door.
Maybe I might watch the movie after all! ;-p
