Thank you all for taking a look at my images, much appreciated!

Just returned from the wonderful city of Marrakesh.

Marrakesh, a former imperial city in western Morocco, is a major economic centre and home to mosques, palaces and gardens. The medina is a densely packed, walled medieval city dating to the Berber Empire, with mazelike alleys where thriving souks (marketplaces) sell traditional textiles, pottery and jewelry. A symbol of the city, and visible for miles, is the Moorish minaret of 12th-century Koutoubia Mosque.

* I have good memories of visiting both Marrakesh and Fes. I preferred Fes though of all the wonderful buildings we saw on the trip the Koutoubia Mosque stands out as the most impressive

The Koutoubia Mosque is the largest mosque in Marrakesh . It is located in the southwest medina quarter of the city, near the Jemaa el-Fnaa market place, and is flanked by large gardens.

The mosque was founded in 1147 by the Almohad caliph Abd al-Mu'min right after he conquered Marrakesh from the Almoravids. A second version of the mosque was entirely rebuilt by Abd al-Mu'min around 1158.

This second mosque is the structure that stands today. It is an important example of Almohad architecture and of Moroccan mosque architecture generally. The minaret tower, 253 ft in height, is decorated with varying geometric arch motifs and topped by a spire and metal orbs. It likely inspired other buildings such as the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat, which were built shortly after in the same era.

Marrakesh, medina...

The terminal extension of the Marrakech Menara Airport was designed by Swiss Architects E2A Architecture and completed in 2008. Clad in white aluminum panels and featuring stylized Islamic ornamental designs, the structure gives the terminal a brightness that changes according to the time of day.

A stranger in a Marrakesh street.

Constructed in the 12th century, Koutoubia Mosque is a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, renowned for its decorative arches, intricate tile work, and sprawling gardens.

There are hundreds of attractive gates in Marrakesh. I passed this one while I was seeking for the big Bab Agnou. Not spectacular but beautifully lit by the evening sun. Did not have to wait long to get a nice silhouette in one of the the arches.
