The Bergisches Land emerged from the historic Duchy of Berg. The region also owes its name to the former sovereigns, the Counts (and later Dukes) of the House of Berg.
The adjectival Latin term terre Montensis, i.e. of the Bergisches Land, was first recorded in writing in a Bergisch office constitution in 1363 [de], although terra de Monte or "Land von Berg" appeared in earlier documents.
Narrow streets with Bergisch half-timbered houses, an idyllic market square surrounded by lovingly restored buildings, an imposing monastery church that sits high up - 72 steps lead up: Gräfrath shows the picture of a small Bergisch town in pre-industrial times. Well-preserved ensembles of houses from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Century and the reformed church from 1689 characterize the picture. The historic town center is a listed building.
The landmark, visible from afar, is the monastery church of St. Mary of the Assumption with its eight-sided roof turret and the "lantern", a turret-like attachment. The church is the oldest building in town. Built around 1195 as a Romanesque pillar basilica and collegiate church of the Augustinian choir women. Today the image is influenced by Baroque. The former monastery building now houses the German Blade Museum.
Mölln is a town in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is surrounded by several small lakes (Stadtsee, Schulsee, Ziegelsee, Hegesee, Schmalsee, Lütauer See, Drüsensee, Pinnsee).
The Elbe-Lübeck Canal flows through the town. Mölln belongs to the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg.
The town was founded in the 12th century. It rapidly became an important town, due to the Old Salt Route, on which the salt produced in the salt mines of Lüneburg (Lower-Saxony) was shipped to the baltic harbour of Lübeck, and the Stecknitz Canal, which was a precursor of the today's Elbe-Lübeck Canal.
Although situated in the midst of the medieval duchy of Lauenburg, the town was mortgaged to the Hanseatic town of Lübeck, which ruled Mölln from 1359 to 1683. Back from this times dates the Möllner Schützengilde von 1407 e.V. which was founded 601 years ago and still exists today with almost 300 members.
Mölln calls itself the Eulenspiegel town, due to Till Eulenspiegel, a legendary trickster known for exposing vices and provoking thought. Eulenspiegel is said to have lived in Braunschweig (Brunswick), but his last year of life he allegedly resided in Mölln. He died from the plague in 1350. Although his existence is not proven, there are several monuments to him in Mölln.

Mark 2:6-10a (NLT)
But some of the teachers of religious law who were sitting there said to themselves, "What? This is blasphemy! Who but God can forgive sins!"
Jesus knew what they were discussing among themselves, so he said to them, "Why do you think this is blasphemy? Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man, `Your sins are forgiven' or `Get up, pick up your mat, and walk'? I will prove that I, the Son of Man, have the authority on earth to forgive sins."

Strong sunlight comes from the door, which is off the left of this scene. The door light is pale & runs across the paralysed figure on the ground & half way up the Jesus figure.
Additional light is provided by the oil lamps, behind Jesus & behind the figures on the left. The oil lamps produce a more yellow/orange glow.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Jesus (in blue other robe) & paralysed man (on green mat)
In the background we see the group of teachers of religious law (the men in blue robes with coverings over their heads), their scribe (man with bag) & several others.
In the foreground are various other people who have been listening to Jesus teaching.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Centre stage belongs to the paralysed man on the mat & to Jesus, who is dressed in a blue outer robe, standing at the man’s head. We can not see any of the four friends of the paralysed man, who are all still up on the roof, however, we can see the 4 ropes, tied to the four corners of the man’s mat, which have lowered him to Jesus’ feet.
As in the previous scene there are various people standing about, who have been listening to Jesus teaching. The two men sitting down & in deep discussion are two of the teachers of religious law. The one on the left is critical of Jesus, the one on the right is more open minded to Jesus’ teaching. This was often the varied reaction that Jesus got: some accepted & some rejected his words... it is the same today!
The man with his hand up to Jesus is kind of saying, “Hold on a minute, the teachers of religious law & discussing your case!” The woman & man behind the teachers are looking particularly aggrieved by Jesus’ teaching. At least the woman on the far left is looking happy! This was all designed to show the wide variation in people’s reactions to Jesus teachings, from full acceptance to outright rejection. This is typical of all people, everywhere - some will accept Jesus’ words, some will not, some will question, some will be undecided.

Mark 2:12 (NLT)
The man jumped up, took the mat, and pushed his way through the stunned onlookers. Then they all praised God. "We've never seen anything like this before!" they exclaimed.

As in scene 01-05, I have set the scene mid morning.
LIGHTING NOTES:
Strong sunlight comes from the door, which is off to the left & behind the viewer, in this scene. This light is flooding the healed paralytic man, who is standing with his arms upraised, in praise of God. The light is also falling behind him, on other figures, including Jesus, who is the figure in the blue outer robe.
Additional light is provided by the oil lamps, behind the figures which produce a yellow/orange glow.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
The paralysed man, now healed, is standing with his hands in the air in the centre left of the scene.
To the left of the man is an angry looking teacher of religious law - cross because he considers what Jesus said (in previous scene) as being blasphemous.
Behind the now healed man we see another teacher of religious law (looking surprised or confused!), a happy woman & Jesus (in blue outer robe) who has his eyes closed & is praying thanks to God the Father.
We can see the paralysed man’s four friends, still up on the rooftop, cheering & praising God for the man’s healing.
The mouse is putting in an appearance again, at the top left of the scene!
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Centre stage belongs to the paralysed man, who has just been healed by Jesus. He is amazed & delighted, of course, & spontaneously praises God with his hands in the air.
I was keen in this scene to convey the faith of Jesus & his serene, prayerful expression, as he thanks God the Father in heaven for this healing.
I have used the strong sunlight, coming in through the door (unseen, the left & behind the viewer) & deep shadows to highlight the drama of this miraculous healing of Jesus.

Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "My son, your sins are forgiven."

As in scene 01 & 02, I have set the scene mid morning.
LIGHTING NOTES:
Strong sunlight comes from the above, which you can see illuminating one of the four friends of the paralysed man, on the rooftop. The sunlight is also coming in over the heads of the people in the doorway (out of view) & casts a beam of sunlight across the floor & upon Jesus clothes. Yellow lamp light casts a warm glow behind the people inside the home.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
We can only see on of the four friends of the paralysed man, o the rooftop, lowing him by means of ropes tied to the four corners of his mat. We can see Jesus laying his hand in compassion on the paralysed man’s head. There are various people standing about, who have been listening to Jesus teaching. On the left of the scene we can see 2 teachers of religious law - the men in blue robes with coverings over their heads. Between them is a scribe, with a leather shoulder bag.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
In Bible times, houses were built of stone and had outside stairways that led onto flat roofs. Roofs were made with joists (long poles of wood that ran from one wall to the other) covered with a mixture of mortar, tar, ashes, and sand, over twigs or rushes, layed across the main supporting poles. Thus the four friends of the paralysed man had to “dig” through the roof (see also Luke 5:19).
Notice that it was in response to the men’s faith that Jesus said, “My son, your sins are forgiven." He was moved by compassion for the man and by his friend’s faith... that if they could get him before Jesus then Jesus could heal him - that’s real faith in the healing power of Jesus!
Mark 2:10b-11 (NLT)
Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said, "Stand up, take your mat, and go on home, because you are healed!"

Additional light is provided by the oil lamps, one of which you can see on it’s wooden stool, on the left of the scene. The oil lamps produce a more yellow/orange glow.
CHARACTERS PRESENT:
Jesus (in blue other robe) & paralysed man (on green mat)
In this scene we can only see the face of one of the group of teachers of religious law, who is looking decidedly angry at Jesus! That’s because he thinks Jesus has just blasphemed. There are various other people standing around the room, who we have seen in previous scenes in this story.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
Centre stage belongs to the paralysed man on the mat & to Jesus, who is dressed in a blue outer robe, kneeling by his side. I was keen to convey the compassion Jesus had for the man, in his gestures & facial expression.
As with some of the previous scenes, we can not see any of the four friends of the paralysed man, who are all still up on the roof. In this scene we can see 2 of the 4 ropes, tied to the four corners of the man’s mat, which have lowered him to Jesus’ feet.

Mark 2:3-4 (NLT)
Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn't get to Jesus through the crowd, so they dug through the clay roof above his head. Then they lowered the sick man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus.

The 4 friends, digging through the clay roof of the house, & the paralysed man on his mat. One of the friends is tying ropes to his mat, which will be used to lower him down in front of Jesus.
There is small grey mouse poking its head out between the parapet’s wall stones, in the top left corner of the cartoon.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
You can see the yellow (sun lit) steps on the right of this scene which lead down to ground level. In scene 01 - Crowd there were 2 children sitting on the steps.
I like to add a mouse of similar creature to my scenes, just for fun!

Mark 2:1-2 (NLT)
Several days later Jesus returned to Capernaum, and the news of his arrival spread quickly through the town. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there wasn't room for one more person, not even outside the door. And he preached the word to them.

Various Hebrew people. Many of them are looking in through the door of the house where Jesus is teaching.
RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This story can also be found in Luke 5:17-26 & Matthew 9:1-8
The scene is entirely made up from my imagination, although I did some research on biblical archeology, in order to find out about building materials & house construction methods, in order to accurately depict the house throughout this story sequence.
I’ve used my usual selection of muted colours for the clothing of people in the crowd. I think ordinary people in biblical times probably had linen (flax) clothing, coloured using readily available natural dyes (from crushed minerals, animals & vegetable matter) giving fairly simple, muted colours.

23-For your orientation, this is the same house in the last image, in the distance is the main entrance from National Highway. Notice the high water mark I pointed out with arrows.
22-I’m in Santa Monica near the entrance and people started to clean and dry their house. In my opinion this was the worst flooding for this subdivision ever.

This issue of Private Detective Stories also contains "The Killer Type" by William Decatur, and "Killer's Trade-Mark" by R. T. Maynard; which are both known house-names, or pseudonyms that E. Hoffmann Price has been published under.
There is no hard evidence that either of these were written by Price, but it is interesting that they were both published in this issue, with an E. Hoffmann Price story.
And so, they are both being included in this collection to provide a topic for debate.
