La Maremma è una vasta regione geografica compresa fra Toscana e Lazio, di circa 5000 km², che si affaccia sul Mar Tirreno e sul Mar Ligure. Oltre a una parte centrale, corrispondente alla provincia di Grosseto, comprende la fascia costiera tra Piombino e il Cecina, e si spinge nel Lazio fin verso Civitavecchia.

Orsa. A very large white sheepdog. The breed is a guardian dog for sheep. The breed is from Italy. They are very affectionate and like to lean up against people.
A Maremma sheepdog (or Maremmano-Abruzzese sheepdog) watching out for wolves, lynxes or even bears, while the sheep calmly graze. With the return of large predators such as wolves, these dogs are often used to frighten them away. The dogs really see the sheep as their family, I've read.
In Romania Maremma Sheepdogs are used as livestock guardian dogs protecting sheep from predators like wolves and bears. The name derives from the Marrema marshlands (Italy) where hundreds of thousands of sheep used to overwinter. The 'bone' (actually a spoked iron collar) worn by the Maremma Sheepdog is a form of protective gear, used to safeguard the dog's neck and throat during confrontations with predators, deterring attacks and minimising damage from bites.
