yes, it is per pixel lighting and yes it is shadow mapping - this is currently being done without the use of frame buffer objects, so the shadow map resolution is limited.
this is not, amazingly enough, an artist's response to mapping, it is a Geological Investigation of the Alluvial Valley of the Lower Mississippi River

I thought this was prettty amusing. I was trying to create a thematic map for a project at work, but somehow my data got crossed, and when it exported, this is what popped up. Not what I had in mind, but looks kinda cool all the same.

I took an illustration approach to this project, very simple and as you can see i purposely coloured the sand and sea to show a sense of direction within the map.
National Geographic Society wrongly indicate Paracel Island as of China in red ink.
Paracel Island is of Viet Nam.
