Mud-puddling, or simply puddling, is a behaviour most conspicuous in butterflies, but occurs in other animals as well, mainly insects; they seek out nutrients in certain moist substances such as rotting plant matter, mud and carrion and they suck up the fluid. Where the conditions are suitable, conspicuous insects such as butterflies commonly form aggregations on wet soil, dung or carrion. From the fluids they obtain salts and amino acids that play various roles in their physiology, ethology and ecology.

This Yungas Pygmy-Owl was one of our early sightings along Manu Road, a sign of the rich diversity found in Manu National Park, Peru. Bolivia is part of the distribution of this species, as suggested by the second part of the scientific name, but it also occurs in Peru and Argentina. The habitat of Yungas Pygmy-Owl encompasses humid forest and cloudforest whose undergrowth typically is festooned with epiphytes and mosses, as in this image.

This Puna Thistletail was vocalizing along the famous Manu Road in Peru, near the entrance to Manu National Park. This species occurs near treelimit in humid habitats of the Andes in southern Peru and a small part of Bolivia. The long, thin tail feathers typical of the small group of Thistletails within the Furnariidae are partially visible in this image.

Any time you see a Quetzal it’s a good day, and finding a Crested Quetzal certainly counts! My guidebook Birds of Peru (Schulenberg et al, Princeton University Press, revised edition 2010) says this species is “rare to uncommon in subcanopy of humid montane forest of east slope of Andes and outlying ridges,” so it was a happy occasion to observe this individual during our time along the Manu Road in Peru. This male with red belly and white undertail was vocalizing, and its signature crest is well-seen in this image.

This magnificent hummingbird,Wire-crested Thorntail, meets only in the northwest of South America. He measures approximately 10 cms in length and weighs only some grams. It is the tireless worker who passes at the speed of the flash of lightning from a flower to an other one. I fought of very long minutes to manage to photograph him and so that it is clear.Photo taken in the national park of Manu.

Il possède à l'âge juvénile une sorte de main griffue comme les fossiles préhistoriques d’Archéoptéryx. Selon une théorie, il pourrait être une sorte de chaînon manquant entre les oiseaux modernes et les dinosaures théropodes.

According to a theory, he could be a kind of missing link between the modern birds and the théropodes dinosaurs.

In the land of strange birds, the Hoatzin is among the strangest. Looking something like a neotropical turkey, it has a patch of bright blue skin covering its face, a startling red eye, and an unruly, comical crest of feathers sprouting from its head. Groups of these birds live together in low trees and bushes at river or lake edge. They fly no better than a turkey, only gliding short distances and invariably crash-landing into bushes, where they usually knock several of their kind off balance and start a ruckus, loud disgrounted croaking. What's more, they smell bad, "a strong, rather disagreeable musty smell," according to Meyer de Schauensee.

The Hoatzin is not related to the turkey, however, but apparently to the cuckoo family. It is the bird's ties to its ancient past that make it a great curiosity. Hoatzin chicks are nearly naked when they're hatched, and for their first two to three weeks they have functional reptilian claws at the bend in their wings, which they use for climbing about in the bushes. They are, briefly, a living link between reptiles and birds.

A chunky monkey to kickstart my shots from our recent incredible trip to Peru and the Amazon basin. This lovely creature is one of the largest of the tree frogs - males measure 91–103 mm (3.6–4.1 in) and females 111–119 mm (4.4–4.7 in), which makes me think this is a lady frog.
