A ellos se les otorga un poder transformativo muy especial, se utiliza en muchas ceremonias, desde las más sencillas a las más complejas, tales como meditaciones, visualizaciones, prácticas y ritos de iniciación. En el budismo tibetano hay una cantidad incalculable de mantras.

Last weekend, winter came back at my place and there was plenty of fresh snow on the mountains of Black Forest. So we went on a beautiful winter hike at the end of March : )
We stopped by at the Darmstädter Lodge (1,030 m), which welcomed us with prayer flags.
Tibetan prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras printed on the flags will be spread by the wind and bring goodwill and compassion to benefit all beings. [see: Tibetan Nuns Project]

Translation:
Oh Divine Force, Spirit of All Creation, Highest Personality,
Divine Presence, manifest in every living being.
Supreme Soul manifested as the Divine Mother and as the Divine.

According to the lineage texts on prayer wheels, prayer wheels are used to accumulate wisdom and merit (good karma) and to purify negativities (bad karma). In Buddhism, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have created a variety of skillful means (upaya) to help bring practitioners ever closer to realizing enlightenment.
The idea of spinning mantras relates to numerous Tantric practices where the Tantric practitioner visualizes mantras revolving around the nadis and especially around the meridian chakras such as the heart and crown. Therefore prayer wheels are a visual aid for developing one's capacity for these types of Tantric visualizations.
The spiritual method for those practicing with a prayer wheel is very specific (with slight variations according to different Buddhist sects).

This was shot on December 20, the night before winter solstice.
I waited till the last light barely sweeped the horizon and highlighted the details on the waves and pebbles at Larkollen Bay, southern Norway.
My mission was to use the light in a specific way that only the objects just above water surface was lighted, while the body of water itself was cast in shadows.
A tribute to winter solstice you might say ;-)
The winter solstice (vintersolverv) occurs at the instant when the Sun's position in the sky is at it`s greatest angular distance on the other side of the equatorial plane from the observer's hemisphere. This means that from now, the days will be gradually have longer periods of daylight.
Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied from culture to culture, but most cultures have held a recognition of rebirth, involving holidays, festivals, gatherings, rituals or other celebrations around that time.
The word solstice derives from Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still).
