The tower of the castle is part of a defensive castle from the 1450s.

Swedish King Gustav Wasa made the castle a big fortress, with walls, moats.

Gustav Wasa's oldest son, heir to the throne, was held here by his brothers, and died of food poisoning. in the history tale , poisoned via pea soup by his brothers.

In the 1700s the castle was owned by De Geer, owner of the other major iron factory in Uppland, and converted it into a baroque castle.

In this day and age, it is privately owned, but open to the public to visit.

The building is located by a lake, surrounded by a beautiful park, with ponds, greenhouses and orangeries.

Another reason why this is my favorite place to be!!

On our holiday to Portugal we came across a large house built in the 18th century..it seemed to be deserted and I longed to go inside to see the interior...when we moved to the village where it was, we got to know the son of the owner and were treated to a tour of this grand old mansion that once was the place where the local bishop stayed when he visited ...there was also a grand ballroom, and a room for gambling with many stories associated with it...a truly amazing place.

When I am visiting a place I typically try to research places that will give me the best view or the highest point of view.

When visiting Portland - one of the places that popped up was the Pittock Mansion. The last image in this album is the view of Portland that is in the opposite direction of this shot. The Mansion itself is a very nice place. They have it staged in time period items showing how they lived if that is your kind of thing.

Have a wonderful Thursday.

This is a local landmark that has fallen into disrepair. Built around 1880 the house must have been magnificent in its day. It still appears to be relatively good shape.

This Victorian mansion was completed for timber baron William Carson in 1886. it is now home of the Ingomar Club. I restored the photo recovered from a film roll taken in 1988 by my wife Diane.

A gorgeous mansion on Lake Michigan.

The long abandoned and badly decaying Latherow mansion is pretty much unshootable this time of the year because of the overgrowth. But it is still easy to see from this angle,it was a pretty special place in its day.It is rumoured that the mansion was a part of the Underground Railroad. It was built prior to the Civil War,and was occupied by a Latherow family relative till 1997....

The title refers to the town the mansion sits on the edge of,Fountain Green.

This intriguing old deserted mansion is nestled in a small ravine surrounded by low grassy hills on three sides. It is located just north of Highway 20, less than one half mile west of the present day Wauconda store and post office. There is a pull off next to Hwy. 20 to park and observe the old mansion. The Pflug mansion is on private land.

John and Anna Pflug came to America in the fall of 1900 from Eastern Germany where they were born. John Pflug, was a small German man, and he had a dream of building a beautiful German style house for his growing family. He started building his dream home in the summer of 1908. Money was scarce in those early years for homesteaders, he hired no help, doing all the carpenter work himself and hauling the lumber from Turpen’s sawmill on Bonaparte Creek, about ten miles away with a team and wagon. His German style home was never completed. Like most of the early homesteaders, he found that all he could do was to take care of his family and send there children to school.

This shot is of the Fulton mansion in Fulton, Texas. George W. Fulton, an East Coast entrepreneur, married Harriet Smith in 1840. After Harriet's father died, Fulton turned Harriet's land inheritance on Aransas Bay into a ranching and meatpacking empire as part of the Coleman-Fulton Pasture Company. During the 1870s, the Fultons made their fortune shipping cattle tallow and hides between Rockport and New Orleans. To symbolize their success, they built a mansion called Oakhurst. The mansion was built over a period of three years, 1874-1877, and was the showplace of the town named for them. The mansion has 29 rooms and is now a Texas Historical Commission property.

To see an impression of how this wonderful building used to look you can see it if you visit this page from English Heritage

Aigburth Vale house at 212 Aigburth Road in Towson was designed in 1868, by architects Niernsee & Neilson, as a country home for wealthy actor John E. Owens.

Most of the property of the estate was originally known as the Rock Spring Farm of Edward Taylor and the parcel was reported to have been over 197 acres (0.80 km2) when it was purchased by Owens in 1853. The mansion is a wood-framed, three-story structure is an example of Second Empire architecture and as such, is topped by mansard roofs on the tower and wings. For a period after 1886, the mansion functioned as an inn and as a summer home for Owen's widow, Mary. In 1889 the majority of the land associated with the estate was sold at auction by the mortgage holder: the Sheppard Pratt Hospital to John Hubner, a Catonsville developer. Thereafter the mansion house and surrounding 4.9 acres (20,000 m2) was sold to Dr. George F. Sargent, as a private mental hospital from 1919 to 1950. Hubner sold the agricultural land to the Towson Nurseries who subdivided portions of it for sale to the Baltimore County Board of Education in 1943 and 1946 for use as the site for Towson High School and it's surrounding campus. The mansion building was leased to Baltimore County Board of Education in 1950 for use as administrative offices and thereafter became the current owners of the building. The Owen estate was once surrounded by over 200 acres (0.81 km2) but today it stands within a suburban neighborhood. As designed, entry to the estate was gained from York Road along what is now Cedar Avenue. The gatehouse building of the estate, built in 1860 by Jacob Reese, still stands though the intersection of Cedar and York has been closed.[1][2]

The building has been identified as an outstanding example of Second Empire architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. (Info from Wikipedia)
