As Robinson Crusoe walked along the beach he found a footprint. It was Friday. Or some other old sole.
Or more precisely it was me walking along the pebble beach that forms the boundary of Nant Gwrtheyrn, the Hidden Valley. Darcy found a nice log. I found the sole of an old plimsoll (remember them?)
A plimsoll shoe, plimsoll or plimsole (British English; see other names below) is a type of athletic shoe with a canvas upper and rubber sole developed as beachwear in the 1830s by the Liverpool Rubber Company.
Plimsolls used to have solid rubber soles about 8 or 9mm thick and the canvas was glued to them without coming up the sides as on the Trainers which replaced them also provided a degree of cushioning. Plimsolls were still in use to circa 1970s and were the closest possible to running around without shoes

Trying to use Devon based companies where possible in the restoration of 2109, I took the Bluebird wheel arches and side skirts to Man Friday GRP products in Crediton where Peter and his team refurbished them, cutting out the body filler repairs and rebuilding missing sections with new GRP. I was rather pleased with the results.

Robinson Crusoe is a novel by Daniel Defoe that was first published in 1719. The book is a fictional autobiography of the title character—a castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical island near Venezuela, encountering Native Americans, captives, and mutineers before being rescued.

Since this was with quite a slow shutter speed, I had to hold that position for quite a while before I slid down the incline and into the bath.
Another excellent full repair was carried out by Man Friday GRP at Crediton. All of the riveted pieces of metal were removed, as was the body filler repairs. New GRP was added to return the skirts to original condition.
"Dharam Singh" is the "man friday" at a family friend's house for years. As a young man he aided my friend's grandmother in raising his father when she was faced with the hardships of life after loosing his husband very early in life. "Dharam" is an Indian spiritual and religious term, that means one's righteous duty or any virtuous path, and this man has lived up to his name, quite literally, serving the family selflessly for years.

I step out of my normal routine and cross to the shady side of the street from where I intend to take photographs of the sunny side. These pictures will act as a visual notebook, they will allow me to take a fresh look at my everyday shops. On my way across the road I take refuge on a traffic island. It's a very small island, but on it is a bicycle chained to a post. I wonder if this is Robinson's bike, or maybe it's to help Man Friday carry out his tasks more efficiently .
I glance back towards the Alma pub. Most of it is still in shadow, but my eye is drawn to the light and I find a sunny picture in one of its big windows.
My brother and I discussing plans for a new house while the foreman looks on. To the extreme left is Cerelo, our "Man Friday" who incidentally is no longer with us since he suffered a stroke five years ago. This photo was taken by my dad in 1978. He likewise passed away in 1996.
I saw a dwelling the the trees and throught about who could be living in it. Just then a man walked out of the ocean with no clothes on heading for the little dwelling. I snapped a picture and kept walking.

I think I'll forget about Robinson for a while and team up with Man Friday as my imaginary walking buddy. He's anxious to get to Newington Green. I'm sure we'll walk this street again . . . so Newington Green here we come . . .
