This was originally called an Orchestral mandolin, then became popular with gondoliers. Production stopped, then two Sicilian brothers began making a number of historical instruments. The mandolin in contemporary times became known as the Pocket mandolin, and sort of a cult instrument. The Luther had them priced from about 300 dollars to 15,000. They all had the same woods, hardware and quality of production, What made the difference in price was the art work. This cost me 650 at the time, I think 3rd step up. The sound is wonderful and unique. The music score, Childgrove, was the first tune I learned on it.

This is just another one of the sculptures at the palace of Ludwigsburg (or part of it). It's quite amazing to imagine that most of these sculptures are as old as the palace itself, almost 300 years, but they have had to be restored several times, especially as they are outside in the park all year.

Tonight at Mackintosh Queen’s Cross we had a wonderful performance by the North Carolina duo Mandolin Orange.
I've seen poor reviews of this model, but as I got it for a lot less less than marked price in a closing down sale it's good enough for me as a "starter" mandolin.
This is just one single shot (No focus stacking). The depth of field was about 10 cm so I put the focus on the g string just at the bridge. To reduce the reflections on the surface of the instrument I used a Nikon circular polarizing filter
The final piece in the vintage musical instrument series. The forth of four images in the set. I used my image of the heirloom mandolin passed to me by my grandfather in 1960. Use of custom backgrounds, textures, typography and paint/sketch effects to create a vintage feel.

I was very busy at the weekend, I did some band photography and some racing photography, just for practise. Think I got some good shots : )

Mandolin Rain
GIbson A-2 mandolin, from the early 1920's.. I think it's from between 1921 and 1923, just before they started building them with truss rods in the neck. Needs a little work at present, but the stories it could tell!
The gears on my Lucky Mandolin which I bought with my winning ticket from the Kentucky Derby. Country House was 65 to 1 and with my 4 dollar bet I got a beautiful Ibanez Mandolin.

Saturday Self-Challenge: Music
Our family is quite musical; my husband can play Guitar, banjo and mandolin (pictured above); my daughter is a music teacher who can play piano, strings and flute (her primary instrument). My son is a guitar virtuoso and writes his own music. Music is on my side of the family, too, and I've attempted to learn violin and mandolin, but never had good enough fine motor dexterity to be any good. The mandolin is made by Martin, famous for its world class guitars.
