Had this debate last night. You won't raise someone that thrives in our society with a slave mentality. The authoritarian "my way or the highway, speak when you're spoken to, I'm the boss, you'll have autonomy when you pay bills" parenting style is about control. You're teaching your kids how to be controlled and this has lasting psychological effects that stay with them throughout adulthood. I'm NOT saying let kids do whatever they want. I'm a strong believer in a good ass whoopin when behavior calls for it. I'm saying you gain way more from people and children by tapping into the incredibly powerful motivating force of freedom - freedom of choice and freedom of voice. Encouraging autonomy (with age-appropriate limits of course) requiring respect, and enforcing effective, meaningful communication instead of relying on fear, power, and control gives you and your children an upper hand at life. Google the difference between authoritative and authoritarian parenting. See which kids have better grades, higher self esteem, are less likely to be involved in violent crimes, are more likely to stick up for themselves, are more likely to voice their opinions in adolescence and adulthood, and have more overall longterm well being. #authoritative #firmbutfair #freedomwithlimits #parentingstyles #democracy #parentingquotes #toughlove #humanmotivation #mentalhealth #counselor #psychology #childpsych #psychquotes #successquotes #teamleader #teamquotes #management #managementquotes #workquotes - queenvandry
