Active Assignment Weekly: Low key
What it took: I used the black background that came with my photo studio box. I put the items inside the box, but I didn't put the light on. I used a speedlight. I took photos from different angles, moved the items around. It was quite difficult to get a good result. I played around a lot with the flash intensity. The image has then been darkened further using radial filters in Lightroom and spots have been cloned out using the spot-removal tool (also in Lightroom). I used this article to brush up on my knowledge (it's been a while!) www.lightstalking.com/low-key-photography/

INSPIRED BY Salle Sparrow De. The photographer saw your photo and liked the white skin look and asked me if I could do that. Usually I don't white-out the skin, and do more natural retouch. I thought he meant the eyeliner too- so I added that, some lashes and shadow- he really doesn't like that part but I do. As per Salle's photo I also did a nose job! The original was already retouched, so technically this is not a Before-After but both pics are "afters".
I did the makeup on the original too.
I don't paint my nails much anymore, but here it is.
(6/29/2011 edit: HAHAHAHA I can't believe I wrote that caption when I first posted this. How untrue it is now!)
Who's that model on the cover? That's Sandy Faye Warner, model, actress, and singer. She was in Some Like It Hot (1959), Point Blank (1967), and other movies, as well as TV shows like Mr. Smith Goes To Washington and two episodes of The Twilight Zone ( "A Nice Place To Visit", and "Dummy" ), just to name a few. She was on the covers of 16 Martin Denny albums- they restyled her hair and makeup to match the theme of each album. This is one of my favorites.
