Ta Prohm (pronunciation: prasat taprohm) is the modern name of the temple at Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara (in Khmer: រាជវិហារ). Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII:125]:388 as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university.

Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm is in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. UNESCO inscribed Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List in 1992. Today, it is one of the most visited complexes in Cambodia’s Angkor region. The conservation and restoration of Ta Prohm is a partnership project of the Archaeological Survey of India and the APSARA (Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap).

I am still working on a selection of my central Asia trip, and that will take a while, but there is still so much more to share.

The Orkney Islands are a group of islands off the northern coast of Scotland. The largest of them is called Mainland, from the Old Norse name Meginland. Mainland's west coast consists of mostly dramatic cliffs, constantly eroded by the waves pounding in from the North Atlantic.

The crested pigeon is native to Australia and is common throughout most of the mainland.

This species is found in dry open woodland, savanna or shrubland.

It is usually found in the vicinity of water, as it has to drink every day, and is absent from the denser forests

Peaceful Sunday

This shot was taken from Vancouver Island, looking across the channel about 40 miles to the mountains on the mainland. The misty pink orange colour over the mountains is smoke, the result of 250 forest fires that are now burning on Canada's west coast.

Beautiful cozy and Fun house, because we are romantics not saints ^^ (mainland ❤ linden)

Buff-banded Rail

Scientific Name: Gallirallus philippensis

Description: The Buff-banded Rail is a medium-sized stout rail with short legs. It has a distinctive grey eyebrow and an orange-brown band on its streaked breast. The lores, cheek and hindneck are rich chestnut. The chin and throat are grey, the upperparts streaked brown and the underparts barred black and white. The eye is red. Young birds are much paler to white underneath, with indistinct bars and only a faint orange-brown tint on the breast. Downy chicks are fluffy black. This rail walks slowly, with tail raised and flicking constantly.

Similar species: The orange-brown breast band distinguishes the Buff-banded Rail from the similar but smaller Lewin's Rail,Dryolimnas pectoralis, which has a rich chestnut crown and nape and a proportionally longer pink bill.

Distribution: The Buff-banded Rail is widespread in mainland Australia, particularly along the eastern coast and islands, and on Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands. It is also found in south-east Asia, New Guinea and New Zealand.

Habitat: The Buff-banded Rail is seen singly or in pairs in dense reeds and vegetation bordering many types of wetlands or crops. It makes widespread use of artificial wetlands like sewage ponds and drainage channels.

Seasonal movements: The Buff-banded Rail is resident and possibly locally nomadic, though little is known of these movements.

Feeding: The Buff-banded Rail feeds on crustaceans, molluscs, insects, seeds, fruit, frogs, carrion and refuse. It mostly feeds early in the morning and the evening.

Breeding: Breeding is poorly known, but the Buff-breasted Rail nests in long grass, tussocks, rushes or crops. It makes an unlined cup-shaped nest of grasses or reeds. Both parents incubate and the young will leave the nest within 24 hours. Both parents remain with the young, which usually feed themselves, though the female may feed them as well. Two broods may be raised in some seasons.

Calls: Loud creaky squeak when breeding but usually silent.

Minimum Size: 28cm

Maximum Size: 33cm

Average size: 31cm

Average weight: 130g

Breeding season: September to February

Clutch Size: 5 to 8 eggs

Incubation: 19 days

Reichenau is an inhabited island located in Lake Constance (Bodensee in German), federal state of Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. The island lies between the Gnadensee and Untersee lakes and is connected to the mainland by a 400-meter bridge built in Napoleon's time. It is the largest island in this huge European lake and is located in Germany, but in its southern area off the Swiss coast, a hundred meters away. Facing its north coast is the town of Radolfzell, and less than ten kilometers away, the city of Constance.

It has a Benedictine monastery founded in 724 by Pirminius and secularized in 1799, which was the main artistic and literary focus of the region during the 9th-11th centuries. In the year 2000 the Reichenau monastery, as well as the rest of the churches on the island, were included in the World Heritage Site by Unesco.

The island appears documented from the times of the Romans. Important works of German literature, from the time of the Minnesang (love songs), have been found in this monastery. Some of them are still kept in his library and others in the Baden county museum.

After World War II, most of the population of Reichenau was evicted for two and a half months so that some 3,000 French prisoners released from the Dachau concentration camp under quarantine lived there before returning to their country of origin.

The Thuringian Slate Park Lehesten is a historic open-cast slate mine with all its unique functional buildings and is now a technical monument in the mining and slate town of Lehesten in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district of Thuringia. The approximately 105 hectare area is located on the Thuringian-Franconian Slate Road south of Lehesten not far from the border with Bavaria in the Thuringian Slate Mountains/Upper Saale Nature Park. The slate was mined as early as the 13th century, later extracted in small quarries and over time it became one of the largest slate mines on the European mainland.

Grenville Channel is a long narrow channel between high mountains between Pitt Island and mainland British Columbia. It is part of the inside passage to Alaska. It is probably named after Sir Richard Grenville, an ancestor of Captain George Vancouver who charted a lot of this area. In this image the BC Ferries ship Northern Expedition can be seen moving through the channel on its way north in early morning light, diminished by the size of the mountains.

After the sun had set, the Botanical Beach gardens served to frame the mainland.

Approximately 50km east of Vancouver is the Stave River in Mission. Although it is only several kilometres long, this river offers year-round fishing opportunities for Lower Mainland anglers. The BC Hydro Dam maintains the water height at a fishable level even on rainy Autumn days. While the salmon season can be quite crowded on weekends, solitude can be found during the winter and spring flyfishing seasons when coastal cutthroat trout are abundant.

On our way to L'Isle-aux-Coudres, PQ.

An endemic and highly threatened New Zealand species of wattle bird. More like a squirrel than a bird, they are noisy and conspicuous forest dwellers, preferring to hop and scuttle through foliage rather than fly. Introduced mammal pests have decimated their numbers, meaning they only survive on a few offshore islands or in heavily trapped or fenced mainland sanctuaries. Their growing numbers and breeding success in heavily protected reserves so they can rebound so-long as they're just given a chance.

Tourist boat seen in the harbour in Sućuraj :)

Sućuraj, a small picturesque tourist and fishermen's town and port, is the most eastern settlement on the island of Hvar (Croatia), and is also nearest to the mainland. There is a ferry dock connecting Sućuraj with the town of Drvenik on the Makarska Riviera. The oldest and best-preserved building in the city is the Franciscan Monastery. The exact date of construction of the monastery is unknown, but it is known that it was renovated in 1309. Another old monument in the town is the baroque church of St. Antoni Padewski from 1663, as well as partially preserved old Venetian fortress (1613). Currently, tourism and fishing play the greatest role in the city's economy. Sućuraj is surrounded by many picturesque beaches and coves that offer ideal places for swimming and relaxing.

View from the hill (near the church of Saint George) on the Old Town in Piran :)

Piran is a town in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. The town is known for its medieval architecture, with narrow streets and compact houses and it's one of Slovenia's major tourist attractions. Architecture of Piran resembles the Italian Venice, to which it belonged in the past, together with Istria. Most of the buildings, as well as the medieval walls separating the city from the rest of the mainland, also come from this period. In the middle of the town is the Tartini Square, with a monument in memory of Giuseppe Tartini. Nearby are located various important buildings, such as Tartini’s house, first mentioned in 1384 and one of the oldest in town, the Municipal Palace. The area of Piran has been inhabited since ancient times. The name of the town most probably originates from the Greek "pyros", meaning fire, due to ancient lighthouses which were supposed to be on the edge of the marina. From 1283 to 1797, the town became part of the Republic of Venice and then was annexed to the Austrian Empire. In 1954 The town was annexed to Yugoslavia.

Hội An, formerly known as Fai-Fo or Faifoo, is a city with a population of approximately 120,000 in Vietnam's Quảng Nam Province and noted since 1999 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Old Town Hội An, the city's historic district, is recognized as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century, its buildings and street plan reflecting a unique blend of influences, indigenous and foreign. Prominent in the city's old town, is its covered "Japanese Bridge," dating to the 16th-17th century.

The tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) is a medium sized, big-headed, nocturnal bird native to the Australian mainland, including Tasmania, and southern New Guinea.

Tawny Frogmouths are often confused with owls due to their nocturnal habits and similar colouring, but are actually more closely related to the nightjars. Like owls, the leading edges of the primary feathers are fringed to allow for silent flight.

Tawny frogmouths are medium sized, big-headed birds that can measure from 34 to 53 cm long. The plumage is silver-grey to mottled grayish-brown, patterned with white, black and rufous mottles and streaks which provide excellent camouflage while the bird is perched. The eyes are large and yellow and the wide bill is olive-grey to blackish with distinctive tufts of bristles above the bill. There is little to no sexual dimorphism.

The Tawny Frogmouth occurs in a variety of habitats, including forests, woodlands, parks and gardens. During the day, they roost on tree branches camouflaged as part of the tree.

The Tawny Frogmouth's diet comprises large nocturnal insects such as moths, as well as spiders, worms, slugs and snails. Small mammals, reptiles, frogs and birds are also eaten. The Tawny Frogmouth pounces upon its prey from a perch.

This picture is taken in Burgers Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands.
