Sometimes the best shot of the day is right in your own backyard.

This little ornament used to adorn a kitchen window many years ago but has been packed away following a move. It seemed a perfect subject to bring to life with a bit of backlight.

On occasion, time is cut short by an accident, as was the case for this little pink tulip. It was broken from its stem and lay on the sidewalk, where it was discovered.

I've not seen many grasshoppers in Michigan this year, but they do seem abundant in Iowa.

Beads (4mm dia.) comprised of Costa Rican lapis lazuli.

 

Frost's bolete is a widely distributed mushroom in the eastern and southwestern US. Boletes are classified as a groupd of mushrooms that produce their spores in tubular structures under the cap, rather than gills. Found growing in association with hardwood trees, especially oak. The network pattern of the stipe (the stalk) and the amber droplets produced along the cap in young fruiting bodies.

This small flower (appox. 35 dia.) is a native wildflower to N. America and a member of the Asteraceae. Frequently found in open fields and disturbed areas and attract pollinators and birds.

Mock strawberry is an invasive species that was introduced into North America as an ornimental from India. It is related to wild strawberry but grows throughout the year and spreads rapidly and can choke out native species on the forest floor.

An attractive and fragrant invasive species in North America, introduced as an ornamental from Europe. It is an unusual plant in that the flowers and seed pods grow at the same time. Dames rocket is considered problematic in both woodlands and grasslands as it produces large numbers of seeds and can out compete native species.

 

Cluster of blossoms is roughly 45 mm diameter.

These were shot approximately 72 hrs after emergence to show the open blossoms and flower structre in detail. As the flowers mature, the become erect. Note tha unopened flower at the bottom left of the group.

The cuckoo wasp (aka jewel wasp) is a small parasitoid wasp that lays its eggs in the nests of other insects so that their larvae may feed on those of the other species. Adults feed on smaller arthropods and nectar of plants on which they land. While the body shape is somewhat similar to that of bees, the cuckoo wasp lacks any hairs on the body which is instead, covered by coarse pits. As a result, they cannot transfer pollen. Over 60 species are found in Michigan.

This an interesting vascular plant that lack chlorophyll and is parasitic on mycorrhizal fungi that grow in association with plant rooots.

The Zuni beaver fetish symbolizes th power of working and attaining a sense of achievement as a builder. It also symbolizes family. Carved from brown jasper with turquoise eyes. artist unknown.
