Demonstration on Plaza Mayor in central Madrid. We just happened to be there as innocent bystanders. Lots of people seemed to be unhappy about something, but the whole event was very civil and organized. My Spanish friends will undoubtedly recognize the flags. My knowledge about the event is scanty enough so that I will not try to say more for fear of misrepresenting facts.

An artful building in Madrid, full of beautiful and mostly very famous 20th century art.

There are more pictures from Spain in the Spain album.

Pasen y vean...

Sometimes I need to look at simple things, for a long time, simply admiring and realizing what life can offer. So rest eye and mind from the complexity and chaos of life. Contemplative Photography can be understood as an open, curious, non-judgmental state of mind, focused on just seeing. Combining photography and meditation, we open ourselves to just seeing, without judging, letting the simplicity, harmony and beauty of the ordinary emerge.

Madrid - España - Spain

The origins of the square date back to the sixteenth century, when the confluence of roads (streets today) of Toledo and Atocha, just outside the medieval village, was celebrated on this site, known as 'plaza del Arrabal' the main market of the town, being built at this time a first home arcades, or market, to regulate trade in the square.

In 1580, after having moved the court to Madrid in 1561, Philip II commissioned the project to remodel the plaza Juan de Herrera, beginning itself the demolition of the 'houses of blocks' of the old place that year. The construction of the first building of the new square, the Casa de la Panaderia, would begin in 1590 by Diego Sillero, on the site of the old fish market. In 1617, Felipe III, ordered the completion of works to Juan Gómez de Mora, who completed the square in 1619.
