1177, Venezia.

Between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, Venice transformed itself from a struggling merchant commune to a powerful maritime empire that would shape events in the Mediterranean for the next four hundred years. In this magisterial new book on medieval Venice, Thomas F. Madden traces the city-state's extraordinary rise through the life of Enrico Dandolo (c. 1107--1205), who ruled Venice as doge from 1192 until his death. The scion of a prosperous merchant family deeply involved in politics, religion, and diplomacy, Dandolo led Venice's forces during the disastrous Fourth Crusade (1201--1204), which set out to conquer Islamic Egypt but instead destroyed Christian Byzantium. Yet despite his influence on the course of Venetian history,we know little about Dandolo, and much of what is known has been distorted by myth.

The first full-length study devoted to Dandolo's life and times, Enrico Dandolo and the Rise of Venice corrects the many misconceptions about him that have accumulated over the centuries, offering an accurate and incisive assessment of Dandolo's motives, abilities, and achievements as doge, as well as his role -- and Venice's -- in the Fourth Crusade. Madden also examines the means and methods by which the Dandolo family rose to prominence during the preceding century, thus illuminating medieval Venice's singular political, social, and religious environment. Culminating with the crisis precipitated by the failure of the Fourth Crusade, Madden's groundbreaking work reveals the extent to which Dandolo and his successors became torn between the anxieties and apprehensions of Venice's citizens and its escalating obligations as a Mediterranean power.

After some recent rain and a good breakfast, a couple of us decied to pay a visit to Madden Falls.

The walk to the top of the falls is easy enough, Getting to a good vantage point below the fals proved more interesting.

After a big scramble, and a couple of dead ends we each found a different way to a vantage point, and capture a few before the rain returned.

This is a great place to unwind and take photos. I love exploring new areas and finding new places to take images.

My new Steve Maddens. I feel like I've had them longer than 3 days.

My First Studio Shot and I hope its not my last.

Siobhán Madden started ballet in 1998 at the age of 4. Siobhán first preformed at the age of 5 at The Rupert Guinness Hall, the theatre is still in existence today but no longer in use as an entertainment venue. She has preformed at The National Concert Hall four times to date and the most recent performance in March of this year saw her first solo as The Sugar Plum fairy in "Celebration of Dance 2012" presented by Kim Lyons School of Classical Ballet.

This Studio shot is a nod to Lois Greenfield one of my all time fav photographers. Myself and Siobhan were looking over some images and decided to see if we could make this work. It was a challenge but I am very happy with the way it turned out. The set up was 3 x Elinchrom BXRi 500's (get these from the great people at Barker Photographic) 2 lights shining into the back of Siobhan set at (5.5.) 1 light directly in front of her set at (5.0)

Camera is the Canon 5D MKII with the Canon 24 - 105mm f/4L is USM lens at 47mm ISO 50 set on Manual at 1/160 @ f/16.

Hope you like it!

Frank, enjoying the vista of the Port Lighthouse.

Had a real Aussie bush bashing to get down to this falls. Got disappointed after seeing only trickling water from this magnificent beauty.

Madden Falls - Darkes Forest

Madder version

I have been meaning to return to this lesser known set of falls down south towards Wollongong since way back in 2014 when I first bush-bashed my way in. The falls are located at Darkes Forest near Madden Plains and are actually a quite accessible, there is even a board walk to the falls - however and its a big one, the trek to the base of falls is not so easy - although i reckon third time round I will have the better track sussed out ;)

There are lots of slippery-ass rocks and trees to thwart the passage in so care must be had.

On this particular day I had joined the mad southies from the Focus group for sunrise at Little Austimner which was enjoyable, yet rather wet :) i had a bit of time to burn on the way back so I thought it a very opportune time to check out the falls. It was great to have some company from some keen Focus shooters (Grant and Mike Hankey) and I am sure they had doubts about actually getting to the base of the falls ;)

This particular shot is from the first platform of the falls where Mike ended up first - I initially lost Mike in the trees enroute to the base of the falls only to see him perched up there with a prime view of the falls, it is a great view point on the falls and lets you get out of the way of the spray and capture the wide view of the scene with water some down onto the platform and also into the pool below, which by the way was pretty full, to give you a idea, the water flow on the very left into the pool was where I was standing last time i was here (see this flic.kr/p/nwZ2sF)

This image is blended panorama using two exposures for each frame (12 vertical sets), its the first time I have properly used a panorama head (thanks Rod and Lorena) and I can really see the benefits when at close range - it makes stitching a absolute breeze.
