Ophrys bertolonii (Orchidaceae) 120 23

This often abundant Ophrys although primarily an Italian orchid, may also be found around the Adriatic coasts of the former Yugoslavia, southern France (rarely) and on the island of Corfu

It is a robust plant, no more than 30 cm high, with oblong-lanceolate basal leaves, arranged in a rosette, while the cauline leaves are smaller and wrap around the stem.

The inflorescence is lax, with 2-8 rather large flowers. The latter consist of 3 conspicuous ovate-lanceolate sepals, usually pinkish (rarely whitish or greenish), and 2 large petals, two-thirds as long as the sepals, linear to oblong, with straight edges, and a more intense pinkish-purple colour.

The labellum is entire (sometimes trilobed), blackish, covered with dense hairiness on the small revolute margins and with a greenish-yellow apical appendage. The macula is well marked (shiny) and blue to dark red in color.

This little flat-faced longhorn beetle is a cool-looking character. They are nocturnal by nature so it was neat to find one out during the day. This species is not host-specific and it lays eggs on several different kinds of trees, including basswood and ironwood, and larvae feed on wood tissue inside the trees. Unfortunately, Astylopsis macula has been found to carry around spores from the butternut canker fungus, leading to the demise of one of our favorite woodland trees here in the Driftless Region.

Bright direct sunlight can be bad for your eyes.

Light is essential for our visual perception, as it allows our eyes to bring the world into focus. It enters our eyes and undergoes refraction and focusing, ultimately reaching the macula on the retina. The light is then converted into electrical signals that travel through the optic nerves to the brain. However, prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB light can cause significant damage to our eyes. Unfortunately, the primary source of these harmful rays, the sun, is both ubiquitous and challenging to avoid.

Another very early morning shot. It was on the rocks of the dam at Peace Valley Park, New Britain Pa.

The drought has wreaked havoc on usually wet The Netherlands. The rivers are at a low never experienced before. Here's the IJssel River so dry that plans are being made to reduce shipping traffic to one-way. In fact, I wanted to take the foot ferry across from Gorssel to hike down to Deventer on the left bank. But the ferry has been discontinued until rain upriver. So I stuck to these banks. Near Epse I saw lots of Redshank, Persicaria maculosa, in places covered by water in wetter times; the parched ground apparently still moist enough for this damp-loving plant. And the tiny pink flowers attracted pretty European Paper Wasps, Polistes dominula.

At first I thought it was lusus but the drawing of the macula confuses me... If someone wants to contribute something, they are welcome...

Each day while in the Codroy we would visit the beach in the hopes of seeing young Piping Plovers. This Sandpiper could be heard more often than seen A large crop

The spotted sandpiper is a small shorebird, 18–20 cm long. The genus name Actitis is from Ancient Greek aktites, "coast-dweller", derived from akte, "coast", and macularius is Latin from macula, "spot". Wikipedia

Wild Geranium flowers fill my flower garden each year. I've never intentionally planted them. However, the geranium ensures that it can spread the wealth. After blooming, fruit capsules are produced 3-5 weeks later. Each consists of a long, central beak-like column (resembling a crane’s head) and five basal cells, each containing one seed. The carpels of the fruit curl upward and backward to spring open when ripe, expelling the seeds 10-30 feet from the mother plant. Gardenista - Commonly called dead nettles because their leaves resemble stinging nettles with no ability to sting, this near-evergreen plant (in mild climates) is a low creeper; some cultivars become randomly mounded. As members of the mint family, these plants have square stems, toothy-edged leaves, and a spreading habit. They spread quickly.

As you may have noticed, I rarely have a problem sharing things that are on my mind with you. But today I'm going a lot further.

Today I give you an insight of a completely different kind. For once, this is not a photo that I took myself. That would have been extremely difficult, even with my technique.

My ophthalmologist took this photo of my eye as part of a check-up earlier this week (I think this is the left one).

For those who are interested, here is a brief introduction to the structure of my eye.

The veins and arteries are easy to identify, I think. The bright spot in the middle is my optic nerve, the connection from my eye to my brain. My macula, i.e. the point with which I see the sharpest (for all photographers - the sweet spot) is the slightly darker area to the right of it.

Except that the optic nerve is a bit enlarged (I probably look too much because I'm so curious) everything is as it should be.

Early Purple Orchid / orchis mascula. Cloud Wood, Leicestershire. 25/04/20.

'SHOCKING ... PINK.'

The tallest Early Purple Orchid I managed to find and photograph on a visit to Cloud Wood. It stood over 30cms high and had the cone-shaped flower cluster so typical of the species ... and what a shocking pink colour the flowers were! As it had passed it’s prime, I made my image showing just the topmost section where the flowers were at their best. (Further down the stem, flowers were either completely shrivelled and dry looking or bearing brown edges and blotches.)

Polyommatus is a genus of butterflies in the family Lycaenidae.

They are small in size about 17 mm wingspan.

Differentiating the different species is quite difficult for me. You have to pay attention, for example, to whether the fimbriae are cheesy or not, also to the arrangement of the macules...

In this case I think it is bellargus, but if someone more reliable corrects me, I welcome the information.

Do you love wondrous stories?

the unimaginable

and the unthinkable

coming together in unlikely fashion

for the dream becomes actual

feeling the earth move

from planes landing in gardens

rains that know zero-gravity

yet fall with paralysing force

a soluble world swallowing our entity

clipping light-hungry Sumacs

outgrown the strangling Summer

and the Sun-starved desert-hued grass

what fell from the sky that day?

a mission striking an electoral impasse

lights in windows from memory's switch

on with the dream

and off with the heads

of those that dwell too long

for nothing is spared where unreality treads

claustrophobic torrents from cumulus scarves

raindrops two to a ton

fall like pearls, chained to my feet

macula traces the way now blocked

from this dream I beg for retreat

to my East the populated vibrancy

the West is the hope of familiar ground

darkness is afforded by the northern 'lights'

and the South I cannot reach

for reality bows to what the subconscience cites.
