Still Damp Enough. IJssel River and Polistes dominula, European Paper Wasp, on Redshank, Persicaria maculosa, Epse, The Netherlands

The drought has wreaked havoc on usually wet The Netherlands. The rivers are at a low never experienced before. Here's the IJssel River so dry that plans are being made to reduce shipping traffic to one-way. In fact, I wanted to take the foot ferry across from Gorssel to hike down to Deventer on the left bank. But the ferry has been discontinued until rain upriver. So I stuck to these banks. Near Epse I saw lots of Redshank, Persicaria maculosa, in places covered by water in wetter times; the parched ground apparently still moist enough for this damp-loving plant. And the tiny pink flowers attracted pretty European Paper Wasps, Polistes dominula.
