Lycaena phlaeas, the small copper, American copper, or common copper, is a butterfly of the Lycaenids or gossamer-winged butterfly family. According to Guppy and Shepard (2001), its specific name phlaeas is said to be derived either from the Greek phlego, "to burn up" or from the Latin floreo, "to flourish".

In the heart of a spring meadow, on a micro scale, nature paints her most precise patterns. Presenting a portrait of a Snake’s-head Fritillary, captured in its natural environment.

This shot is a celebration of pure optics and organic texture, developed in a 'naturalish' style with full respect for the raw atmosphere and minimal digital intervention.

Working with this intricate detail against a living, breathing background required absolute precision. Captured using my trusted setup: the Sony Alpha body paired with the exceptional Irix 150mm f/2.8 Macro lens. This glass renders a three-dimensional quality that brings out every square of this unique mosaic.

The sharp focus on the velvet-like petals contrasts beautifully with the soft, creamy green bokeh of the background, creating an intimate, atmospheric study of the wild.
