The bridge which stretches 150 metres (490 ft) over the Kura River was ordered by the City Hall of Tbilisi to create a contemporary design feature connecting Old Tbilisi with the new district. The official opening took place on May 6, 2010. The bridge stretches over Kura River providing a unique view of Metekhi Church, Narikala Fortress and statue of city's founder Vakhtang Gorgasali on one side, and Baratashvili Bridge and Presidential Office on the other.

The bridge a design of which reminds of a marine animal has a curvy steel and glass canopy top which shimmers with an interactive light display at night, generated by thousands of white LEDs. The roof is fitted with 1,208 custom LED fixtures designed and installed by the Dutch Primo Exposures and RENA Electronica companies, using 6,040 high-power LUXEON Rebel LEDs with 4,200K color temperature, supplied by Future Lighting Solutions. The glass panels which run along the whole length of the walkway are embedded with linear low-power LED arrays. The lighting is switched on 90 minutes before sunset illuminating Kura River below and buildings on both banks of the river.

The bridge was designed by the Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, who had also designed the buildings of the Presidential Administration of Georgia and Ministry of Internal Affairs; the lighting design was created by French lighting designer Philippe Martinaud. The structure of the bridge was built in Italy and transported to Tbilisi in 200 trucks while the lighting was installed on site during the assembly of the structures. (Wikipedia.org)

New contactless Lithops Glow Technique:

A warm-white Luxeon LED works as a bright point-source that is relay imaged onto the Lithops surface with a couple of lenses, illuminating the transparent plant body through the top window. Now Lithops glow photos can be shot without obstructing parts pressed onto the plants like the head of a flashlight or the stem of a fiberoptic light guide. This image here is an overlay of sequent individual glow photos, all shot with the same fixed camera position. No color or contrast manipulation was done; the white balance is manually referred to the light source shining onto a white sheet of paper.

Lithops are extremely succulent plants originating from the semi-deserts of southern Africa. Their plant body rests under ground, while on top they have transparent windows to let sunlight in for photosynthesis. A camouflage pattern on the windows lets them appear more or less like a pair of pebblestones, so hungry animals may hardly find them. I like them because they look like ornamented knobs or gemstones.

The first New Year’s Eve Ball lowering celebration atop One Times Square was in 1907. This proud tradition is now a universal symbol of the New Year. The New Year’s Eve Ball is the property of the building owners of One Times Square. The first Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration was held in 1904.

The Ball is covered with a total of 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles. The House of Waterford Crystal factory is located in Waterford, The Republic of Ireland

The Ball is 12 feet in diameter, and weighs 11,875 pounds.

As the famous New Year's Eve Ball descends atop One Times Square, an estimated one million people in Times Square, millions nationwide and over a billion watching throughout the world are united in bidding a collective farewell to the departing year, and expressing joy and hope for the year ahead.

Romanian M44 rifle muzzle and bore focus stacked by Darron Birgenheier

This is my among my first experiments in focus stacking.

This is the muzzle and rifled bore of a 1954-vintage Romanian M44 bolt-action carbine, a Mosin-Nagant variant. Caliber is 7.62x54R Russian.

The bore appears to be in fair to good condition, to the naked eye. There is some pitting and general roughness, nothing terrible. Certainly still shootable.

I shot a series of 10 photos with my old Nikon D50 DSLR, and a Tokina F/2.8 100mm macro lens. Each image was shot at F/16. I changed the focus point manually between each exposure, stepping from the crown of the barrel to the most distant point of the front sight base.

I used the trial version of Zerene Stacker to combine the 10 images into this deep-field image.

The bore was lit by pointing my very bright Luxeon Rebel LED flashlight down the bore from the breech end. External lighting was provided by a cheap TTL ringflash, mounted on the lens.

Taken using S.I.T method with 5 Luxeon 3 watt leds. There is another waterfall in this cave that is around 30' tall but we couldn't get a shot of because there was just too much water going over the lip for us to rappel down. There will always be the next time.

Cartier wraps itself in a spectacular lighting scheme for the holiday season. Two pieces of red ribbon wrapping the entire building meet at a 14 foot wide LED bow, while two giant LED tiaras, each measuring 5-feet by 16-feet, sit above the two public entrances on 5th Avenue and 52nd Street. Designed by the London-based Metropolis Group of Companies, the display uses over 17,000 LEDs, including 2,340 red Luxeon LEDs from Lumileds in the ribbon, and 1000 white Luxeons in each tiara, with the remainder being a mixture of red and white 5mm LEDs from Plus Opto. The tiaras, each featuring 19 large "diamonds" fabricated from multi-faceted acrylic layers, are modeled on the famous authentic Cartier tiaras.

The Cartier Building, at 651 Fifth Avenue, stands in one of the last remaining mansion in midtown and the only of a complex of six residences. The former Morton F. Plant townhouse and the adjacent Edward and Frances Holbrook House, erected in 1905 by architects Robert W. Gibson and C.P.H. Gilbert, was converted, into a Cartier boutique in 1917, by architect William Welles Bosworth.

Morton F. Plant was a successful banker, yachtsman and owner of baseball teams who had purchased the property from William K. Vanderbilt, whose own mansion was diagonally across Fifth Avenue. Vanderbilt sold the property with the provision that it not be used for commercial purposes for at least 25 years. Plant grew to disdain the rapid commercial redevelopment of the neighbrohood, and when he chose to move uptown arranged an agreement between and Cartier's, which reportedly exchanged a valuable pearl necklace for the property.

The six-story, marble and granite, neo-Italian Renaissance-style palazzo underwent relatively few modifications for commercial use--adding an entrance and a sculpted clock on Fifth Avenue, as well as storefront windows designed to fit in with the original facing. At the Christmas holiday season, Cartier wraps the building in a large, red bow-tied ribbon.

Cartier, a reknown jeweler and watchmaker, was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier and is currently a subsidiary of Compagnie Financière Richemont SA. His son Pierre Cartier established the New York branch in 1909. In 1904, they crafted the first practical wristwatch, the Santos, and were celebrated for the infamous ""Bestiary," best illustrated by the famous Panthère brooch of the 1940s created for Wallis Simpson. Other Cartier innovations include the legendary mystery clock and exotic orientalist Art Deco designs, including the daringly colourful "Tutti Frutti" jewels.

The Morton and Nellie Plant House and the Edward and Frances Holbrook House were designated landmarks by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1970.
