As I walked down the steps to the foot bridge I was struck by the patterns in the cliff face across from me. I would like to shoot this one again but aiming just a bit higher. Or I could come back down here with a heavy tripod and spend a couple hours studying and photographing the rocks.

It is only a couple hundred yards from the top of the Middle Falls to the Upper Falls area. The hike takes on the feeling of an idyllic afternoon stroll.

Letchworth trail 1 ends at the Park Road junction just past the bridge arching across the Genesee. I crossed road and continued west then north along trail 2. The trail follows an old farm road roughly paralleling the railroad. Trail 2 turns back east toward the river, passes through this old underpass and leaves the railroad behind. I took this photograph and put the camera away.

I find the Lower Falls in Letchworth State Park more fascinating - and more challenging - than the middle or upper falls. The challenge comes in finding a good vantage point to view and photograph them. This is from the top of the stairway leading from the large stone deck down to the footbridge across the rive.

Once again, I have photographed these falls from this spot multiple times with multiple cameras over the years. It's never quite the same as before.

My intent was to take a reference photograph of the unofficial overlook below where I took the photographs of the falls. That didn't work so well so I changed the focus to the flowers in front of me. There's a gray spot in amongst them that I think might be said overlook, but one cannot be sure of such things.

After I finished at the footbridge I back up to the main deck then up another twenty feet or so to the path through the woods to the Lower Falls overlook. The main overlook is impressive, but it's still too high to get a good photograph of the falls. (The best place to see the entire falls is from up on the gorge path.)

There is another path, unofficial but well worn, to a lower overlook. It isn't treacherous by any means, but it still a place where a look down along the way will remind one to be careful.

I passed this overlook before I got the the 107 stone steps leading down to the level of the large open area just right of center. It is one of my favorite spots.

Wolf Creek glen is considerably below the level of the gorge rim. For the good of the trail even more than the good of the hikers, the park has built steps on the steeper slopes. This set is relatively new and well constructed. They should give many years of service.

Letchworth Middle Falls

So many photographs I have taken here. The Lady is never quite the same as before.

Letchworth is a waterfall chaser's delight. There are the three main cascades on the Genesee River and there are innumerable falls of assorted shapes and sizes along the tributary creeks on both sides of the gorge.

The Saint Helena area has three levels. Just down from the park road in the Saint Helena shelter and picnic area. I parked there and sat at one of the tables for my morning reading and prayers. I took this photograph as I was getting ready to head out. I am looking across the river gorge to the east rim.

Further down is another large picnic area. From there you can follow the old roads down to the two river access points shown in my posts from the past few days. The old town of Saint Helena was on the flats at the by the river.

While the new bridge was being constructed and the old one removed, the state closed off this area and took the opportunity to do a huge amount of repair and refurbishing of the pathways and stonework dating back to the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. They did a beautiful job of it.

There is small overlook along the trail at the very beginning of the Archery Field Area. I sat down on the stone wall and loaded a fresh roll of film in the OM-2. This was the first shot on the roll.

Wednesday, July 13 I got back to the Letchworth State Park Lower Falls area, which was still closed off when I hiked trail 1 in early June. I drove through rain showers on my way there but had no rain after I started walking. It was still overcast at the beginning of my walk with beautiful subdued lighting at the beginning and bright sun later on.

Wolf Creek glen is considerably below the level of the gorge rim. The trail crosses the creek on a foot bridge just upstream from where the creek begins its plunge down a series of falls to the Genesee River. I have taken many photographs of and and around this little bridge.

It is a sharp right turn on to the footbridge then at sharp left on the other side. The gorge wall along the path is vertical or even overhung. The path is almost always muddy.

It is a gentle walk down (stiffer going back!) from Inspiration Point to the Middle and Upper Falls area. Just past the bridge the road descends sharply to the level of the river between the two falls. Trail 1 crosses the bridge then follows the road down to the falls. There is a path down to the stream on the near side; it would be a serious scramble to get back up on the far side. I followed the main trail.

There is an overlook on the gorge rim up from Wolf Creek. From there you can look back toward the Tea Table area and forward to Archery Field, visible in the center of the photograph. It would take me about an hour to get there.
